Dear Friends of St. Raymond Parish, A s our summer months come to an end and we all get “back to busi- ness,” I would like to bring you up to date on some of the wonderful things that are happening here at your parish. Please be assured — it is never dull at St. Raymond’s! We have been involved in the Archdiocesan Program called MAKING ALL THINGS NEW and over the past few months, our cluster has been meeting to present recom- mendations to the Cardinal. Our cluster consists of St. Raymond’s, St. Anthony’s, Santa Maria, St. Dominic-Our Lady of Solace and St. Helena’s Churches. Our task was to review our parish life; the vitality of the different parishes in the cluster; our finances; the condition of our facilities; and the number of priests that serve the people of each cluster. Our recommendations are with the Cardinal; we await his decisions about closings, consolidations and collaborations. Our prayers are for him and for our par- ishes — not only in this local cluster but throughout the entire Archdiocese. We often hear the term “downsizing” but considering all of the factors that affect us, I think the better term would be “rightsizing” the number of parishes and their ability to serve the People of God throughout the Archdiocese. Our parish continues to provide religious formation and academic programs to the students in our three parish schools, which have a combined enrollment of just over 2,000 students. Our religious education program on Sundays is a vibrant one, not only with classes, but with a children’s Mass and a Family Pro- gram throughout the year. Our parish societies are alive and well — serving the needs of the parish; extending a helping hand to the poor and needy in the area; and attracting new members to the parish, especially for Sunday worship. Once again, we invite you to return to the parish for our Annual Parish Home- coming Mass on Sunday, October 19 at 12 noon. This Annual Mass has grown over the years. It is always a pleasure to see so many of our old friends return to say hello and to say thank you for continuing the wonderful traditions and services of St. Raymond’s Parish — just like the good old days. Dear Friends of St. Raymond Parish,

As our summer months come to an end and we all get “back to busi-ness,” I would like to bring you up to date on some of the wonderful things that are happening here at your parish. Please be assured — it is never dull at St. Raymond’s!

We have been involved in the Archdiocesan Program called MAKING ALL THINGS NEW and over the past few months, our cluster has been meeting to present recom-mendations to the Cardinal. Our prayers are for him and for our par-ishes — not only in this local cluster but throughout the entire Archdiocese.

Our religious education program on Sundays is a vibrant one, not only with classes, but with a children’s Mass and a Family Pro-gram throughout the year. Our parish societies are alive and well — serving the needs of the parish; extending a helping hand to the poor and needy in the area; and attracting new members to the parish, especially for Sunday worship.

Once again, we invite you to return to the parish for our Annual Parish Home-coming Mass on Sunday, October 19 at 12 noon. This Annual Mass has grown over the years. It is always a pleasure to see so many of our old friends return to say hello and to say thank you for continuing the wonderful traditions and services of St. Raymond’s Parish — just like the good old days. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

CEMETERY NEWS

St. Raymond’s Cemetery continues to be one of the largest parish owned and directed cemeteries in the United States. Each day, the parish provides a parish priest for burial prayers and final commitment ceremonies. The Cemetery is open for visitation seven days per week.

With nearly 3,000 burials each year, St. Raymond’s Cemetery continues to expand and offer new burial opportunities.

Our Mother Seton Mausoleum in the Old Cemetery is almost filled, although some spaces are still available. This building is a private area for interments with a magnificent mosaic of Padre Pio on the interior west wall. You are invited on Tuesday, September 23 at 11:30 a.m. to a special prayer service in honor of St. Padre Pio at the Mother Seton Mausoleum in the Old Cemetery.

Our newest burial area is the Our Lady of Hope Cremation Garden with nearly 1,500 niches for cremains. The Cremation Garden, a private area well-suited for prayer and personal reflection, is enhanced by a continuously running water fountain.

There is a soon-to-be com-pleted Mother Teresa Sec-tion, as well as a Padre Pio Section, in the New Cemetery.

When the Cemetery is completely filled, we estimate that there will be more than 500,000 deceased buried in our holy grounds.

We celebrate Mass twice each year for the deceased in our Cemetery — on Memorial Day with special prayers for our veterans, and on the Feast of All Souls Day, November 2. These Masses are celebrated under a tent in front of the St. Francis Mausoleum. We also have a monthly Mass celebrated at St. Raymond Church for all who have been buried during the previ-ous month. This parish Mass is usually celebrated on the third Thursday of each month at 12 noon. Speak with Debbie at the rectory office to confirm the date and time, 718-792-4044.

Our Cemetery is a beautiful place for prayer, meditation and remembrance of our loved ones who have gone on before us. For personal consultations and visits to the different areas of the Cemetery, please call Marlene at the office, 718-792-1133.

WHAT’S NEW AT ST. RAYMOND’S …

MILLER LANE was officially dedicated and blessed in memory of our good friend and parish supporter, the late Stuart Miller. MILLER LANE is a garden of peace and reflection between the Elementary School and the Church — always blossoming with Spring and Summer flowers and trees. The service concluded with an indoor barbecue because of the cool weather on the evening of May 14.

THE AFRICAN COMMUNITY COMMITTEE is a newly formed society of the parish. The number of parishioners from the West Coast of Africa has significantly increased in recent years, especially from the countries of Ghana, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast. Under the direc-tion of two of our associate priests — Monsi-gnor Stephen and Father Fred — our African parishioners meet once a month for prayer, a religious lecture and fellowship. We are grateful for their support of our annual parish feast of St. Raymond Nonnatus with their Afri-can culinary treats, as well as their participa-tion in the life of the parish in so many ways. Welcome!

Stuart Miller's friends and colleagues (l to r) Denis Fatovic, Joseph Russo and Phil Sergio near the Miller Lane sign after the dedication ceremony.

The Pax Christi Sisters (left to right): Sr. Maria Lorena Pallares, PCI; Sr. Maria Eleazar Casas, PCI; Sr. Adelina Garcia, PCI; Sr. Maria Cleotilde Resendiz, PCI.

THE MEXICAN COMMUNITY continues to direct our annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe with a triduum complete with a mariachi band and a solemn Mass on December 12. We thank them, as well as the Pax Christi Sisters, who are from Mexico, for bringing these beautiful fiestas to our parish.

Speaking of the Pax Christi Sisters, they have been administering the parish’s re-ligious education program for the past 10 years. The Sisters serve in five different parishes. Here at St. Raymond’s, Sisters Adelina and Eleazar are in charge of the CCD program for our public school students; they also direct the religious education programs for our teenagers and adults who wish to receive the sacraments of initia-tion. The Pax Christi Sisters are bilingual and have special training in catechetics. In addition to directing our annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe in December, the Sisters also coordinate the Hijas de Maria — a program for young teenage girls. We are blessed to have their services here in the parish. They certainly have become a part of the St. Raymond family.

The Archdiocese of New York is reaching out to all Catholic school elementary gradu-ates, informing them about programs and school events at their elementary school, and other local news. The program is called CAP — Catholic Alumni Partnership — and CAP is also asking for your financial support for the school where it all began. Please

look for the CAP letters, invitations, dates and opportunities to give a gift to your parish school. St. Raymond’s is looking for and asking for your support, prayers and financial gifts.

PRESENTING THE CLASS OF 2014

On June 6, Saint Raymond Academy for Girls held its graduation for the Class of 2014. Ninety-one young women — the largest graduating class in the Academy’s his-tory — received their high school diplomas from the Academy before their parents, the faculty and the administration. Collectively, Academy graduates earned an astound-ing $6 million dollars in scholarships and grants. On graduation day, Monsignor Graham gave a moving tribute to the class during his homily and at the end of the ceremony, he asked them to mark their calendars for June 6, 2024 — their 10th reunion. Monsignor told the graduates to come back and visit, give advice to their fellow young alumnae and help a student in need. CONGRATULATIONS to the graduates!

St. Raymond Academy for Girls

On Saturday, May 3, more than 30 women from the Class of 1964 came back to the Academy to celebrate their 50th reunion. This was a special day not only for them, but also for the Academy because they were the Academy’s first graduating

class. The Class of ’64 and SRA will always have a special con-nection to one another. Alumna Helene McArdle Mickowski put it this way, “Our 50th reunion was a joyous afternoon recount-ing memorable times, reconnecting with friends, and giving thanks for the gift of a special education from our parents. We are indebted to Monsignor Graham, Sister Mary Ann D’Antonio and SRA for their generosity in allowing our special class the opportunity to share this momentous occasion at the beautiful Saint Raymond Academy.”

This year, the Academy will honor the Class of 1965, who are cel-ebrating their 50th reunion; fac-ulty member Joseph Hogan; Bar-bara and Herb Gstalder, The

HUMANAS Foundation; Larry Galbo, Pepsi; alumnae Sarah Hoctor Gallagher ’69; Kathleen Roche Piccoli ’74; Daniella Adames ’07; and Mary Reidy Ciaffa ’65 in memoriam. The event will be held at The Ma-rina Del Rey from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. For tick-ets or more information, please contact Lisa Schaller at 718-824-4220 ext. 1052 or email [email protected].

TWO AMAZING FIRSTS FOR SRA

When Baaba Abaka-Yankson came to Saint Raymond Academy from Ghana three years ago, she had a dream of attending Columbia University and be-coming a surgeon. Baaba’s dream is coming true. In September, she will begin her first semester at Columbia University. Baaba is not just a gifted student; she is also a very special young woman. Her teachers and fellow classmates describe

her deep sense of faith, her genuine humility, her quiet dignity and her profound appreciation of family. Baaba’s senior year was certainly not an easy one. She had many sleepless nights preparing for interviews and writing her essays, as she prepared to make her dream a reality. Well, those sleepless nights paid off! Not only did Baaba win The New York Times Scholarship, a prestigious honor, but she was accepted to Columbia University, Dartmouth, NYU, Barnard, Cornell, Macaulay Honors College at CUNY, Wesleyan, Binghamton, Stony Brook and Brown. This story ends with a quote from one of her college essays. “If I could have a conversation with my adversities, I would thank them for being in my life. Without hardships, I would not have come to uphold hard work and perseverance as the roadmaps to the prosperous future I earnestly work for. I do not view my life as a story of misfortune but as a testament to the strength of a Ghanaian girl who is fighting her way to the American dream.”

2014 – AN OUTSTANDING CLASS, AN OUTSTANDING YEAR

St. Raymond High School for Boys has concluded another suc-cessful year of academic achievement, athletic feats, college acceptances and more. 100% of the Class of 2014 received their diplomas. Having participated in both the Graduation Mass and the Graduation ceremony on May 5 and 16, re-

spectively, our graduates are fully equipped and ready to move on to the next important phase in their life journey and toward a better tomorrow.

SRHS applauds this year’s outstanding Valedictorian and Salutato-rian, top-tier students who have excelled academically during their four years at St. Raymond — Valedictorian Mittal Rana, who will attend New York University in New York City, and Salutatorian Mohammed Tanvir Khan, who will attend Fordham University in the Bronx. We are certain they will move our world with their talents and aspirations, and continue the legacy that is St. Raymond High School for Boys.

In addition to classroom achievements, SRHS senior athletes are on

their A game with MLB potential and top-tier college team athletic of-fers. Adam Delacruz has committed to play baseball at Cochise Junior College, a top 10 baseball junior college in Douglas, Arizona. William De La Cruz, the first in his family to attend college, will play baseball at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts. Brian Mejia and Reynaldo Hernandez have committed to play baseball at the College of Central Florida. Alexis Martinez will play baseball at Keystone College in La Plume, Pennsylvania. Brandon Stanford has committed to play lacrosse at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. And Giovanni Abreu has been drafted to the Texas Rangers in the 2014 First Player Draft pick.

We are overjoyed with our seniors’ success stories and what they are choosing to do after St. Raymond. To learn more about the Class of 2014 or to find out how you can help our students, please contact Christina DeCrescenzo at [email protected] or 718-824-5050 ext. 140.

ST. RAYMOND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FUND

St. Raymond Elementary School offers our students a solid Catholic education — a strong academic program immersed in the Catholic faith and a broad array of extracurricular activities, in a safe, supportive and loving environment. We provide

excellent value for a reasonable tuition. Sadly, many families are unable to send their children here because they can’t afford the tuition. Others send them, only to have to leave when they can no longer keep up with the payments. We do provide scholarships for some students on an as needed basis but they aren’t sufficient to keep up with the demand. To address the need for tuition assistance, we are forming the St. Raymond Elementary School Financial Assistance Fund. Through your generosity, you can give our current students the opportunity to remain in our school and incoming students the chance to join our school community.

For our alumni, here is a chance to give back to the school that gave you so much. Consider making a donation on your own or joining with your classmates to give a one-year scholarship in honor of your graduation year.

Catholic education lasts forever. Won’t you consider helping to provide our students with a lifelong education?
