FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners, This coming week is Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. The schedule of services is else-where in this bulletin. Among the activities of the season here at St. Raphael’s is a weekly Holy Hour (Tuesdays 6:30 to 7:30 pm), concludeing with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Also, Stations of the Cross, in English, on Wednesdays following the 9:00 am Mass. Don’t forget to get your Little Black Book of daily reflections, and use it starting this Sunday. In Spanish, we offer the Via Crucis on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm, as well as a Lenten Retreat on ―Forgiveness‖, presented by Father Alvaro Flores on Saturday, March 23rd. More details on that event will be in next week’s bulletin. In any language, the sacrament of Penance is a valuable Lenten practice. We have confes-sions in church on Saturdays from 4:00 pm to 4:45 pm, as well as in the rectory office on other days by prior appointment. Monday of Holy Week (April 15th) is Reconciliation Monday, with the sacra-ment available all day in all Catholic Churches throughout New York City. It’s your best preparation for Easter. Besides prayer and fasting, Lent is also a time for charity, for good works. The Annual Catho-lic Appeal, currently in promotion, is a concrete opportunity to put your faith into actions of service and solidarity. You can also help us reach our assigned parish goal of $41,991.

On a different topic, this Sunday, at the 11:00 am Mass, we celebrate the Enrollment Ceremony for our upcoming First Com-municants. This ritual marks the beginning of the final preparation for their receiving First Eucharist on May 19th. They are excited about this spiritual highpoint in their young lives. Also upcoming (next Sunday afternoon) is an afternoon of reflection for our Spanish-speaking liturgical ministers. These in-clude Spanish-Mass ushers, ministers of Holy Communion, minis-ters of hospitality, Spanish choir members, lectors. The afternoon will be conducted by Father Jose Amable. Like the Prodigal Son in the gospel, let us seek the Father’s

mercy during this season, accepting the Lenten challenge to surrender our selves in ruthless hon-esty to God. Scripture says on Ash Wednesday, ―This is the acceptable time; today is the day of sal-vation.‖ -Father Jerry Jecewiz

NEXT WEEKEND...

THIS ‘N THAT 1. At the rear of the church you may have

seen the box for depositing last year’s palm, to be burned in a day or so to create the ashes for ash Wednesday. Tomorrow will be the last day this palm will be of use for this purpose.

2. Rice Bowls from catholic Relief Services are available, in English or Spanish, at the rear of the church. The recipients of this project are among the neediest people on planet earth. The Bowl is available in Eng-lish or in Spanish, with corresponding di-rections for use included inside.

3. Remember to take home (and use!) your copy of the Little Black Book of daily Lenten mediations, available in English or in Spanish. The readings begin today, the Sunday before Lent begins. It’s amazing how many people here express interest in getting this booklet each year. It is a really effective devotional for Lent.

Each year St. Raphael R.C. Church joins with the Diocese of Brooklyn to conduct

the Annual Catholic Appeal, which supports Catholic programs throughout

Brooklyn and Queens and affects the lives of countless individuals and families

living in our neighborhoods.

The goal of the Annual Catholic Appeal is to raise a minimum of $8 million to

provide programs and ministries throughout the Diocese and support the local ef-

forts of parishes like ours.

WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE Annual Catholic Appeal?

The Lord calls us all to care for one another and the Church. It is up to us to foster faith and do

good works in the ways we know how.

Those who are hungry, without shelter, without access to Catholic education, men discerning

the priesthood and those who are ill and dying are just a few of the groups who depend upon

our generosity to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Your gift to the Appeal is a response in love

to serve our neighbors by funding the ministries of the Diocese of Brooklyn that cannot be sup-

ported by any one parish alone but benefit all parishes in our Diocese.

You can answer the call of Jesus who asks us to feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, visit

the sick and imprisoned, honor our mother and father, celebrate the Eucharist and educate and make disciples of all nations through

your donation to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal.

Why is my participation important?

St. Raphael R.C. Church has always counted on the broad-based support of its parishioners to accomplish its fundraising

objectives, particularly for the weekly offertory.

This appeal also needs that broad-based support. All households are asked to consider a gift to the Annual Catholic Ap-

peal (over and above their continued annual support of the parish in the weekly collection) over the next ten (10)

months.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR THE Annual Catholic Appeal AND HOW CAN WE HELP?

In the coming weeks, every family will be invited to participate in this appeal and prayerfully consider a pledge.

Please join with us to respond to those in Brooklyn and Queens who are in need and support the important work of our

Church through a pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal today.

Thank you and God bless you.

How Will Our Parish Benefit?

The goal at St. Raphael R.C. Church is $41,991. Once we exceed our goal, we will then receive 100% of all funds raised above this fig-ure directly back to our par-ish.

Please remain assured that your

gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal

cannot be used in the settlement

of abuse claims or for anything

other than the intended purpose

outlined in Appeal materials.

For questionsregarding the

Annual Catholic Appeal, or to schedule an appoint-ment to make a gift to the parish, please contact the

Parish Office –
