FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners,

It’s been well over a half-century since Father Ken Larkin’s high-school Latin course, but I somehow still remember the first words of Caesar’s Gallic Wars which he required us to memorize as a gem of an opening sentence for a memoir. ―Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres…‖ (―All of Gaul is divided into three parts‖). (I’ll spare you the rest of the recitation). Someone recently observed that marriage, like ancient Gaul, is also divided into three parts. Part One: times of tender union. The lovey-dovey experience of the wedding ceremony, the honeymoon, the birth of a baby, a child’s First Communion, a milestone anniversary, etc. Part Two: times of active fighting. The writer Thornton Wilder, reflecting on his own years of marriage,. observed, ―The best parts were the fights...everything else was so-so.‖ Years ago, I head a marriage counselor say that he so often heard, among his clients, that the first major fight after the wedding was about the Christmas tree: he was OK with having an artificial one, she had to have a real one. And out came the heavy artillery. Part Three: times of uncertain drifting. Life goes on, but more-or-less aimlessly. A few zigs, a few zags. A couple of right turns, a couple of left turns. Nothing high-energy. Just going with the flow, carried hither and yon, as if by the tide.

Only the partners themselves can judge which ―part‖ of the marriage they are in at the present time. A son always felt his parents had a constantly ―good‖ marriage. When his Dad, in a un-guarded emotional moment, bared his soul about the situation being otherwise, the son was flabbergasted. On this World Marriage Day, we pray for those who com-mit to living their ―tripartite‖ unions each day. And let’s never, as outsiders, have the gall (Gaul?) to judge or even guess what part of marriage they are interfacing with at this moment. -Father Jerry Jecewiz

February 10th: Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Grateful, as a parish, for being under the protecting wing of

Archangel Raphael through the years.

Second collection next weekend: Black and Indian Missions Mandated by the III Plenary Council in 1884, the 125 - year - old National Collection for Black and Indian people continues as the embodiment of the Church’s concern for evangelizing the Black and Indian peoples of the United States. The funds are distributed as grants to needy dioceses throughout the United States, supporting and strengthening evangelization programs which otherwise would cease.

PRAYER IN HONOR OF MARRIAGE

God our Father, we give you thanks for the gift of marriage: the bond of life and love and the font of the family.

The love of husband and wife enriches your Church with chil-

dren,

fills the world with a multitude of spiritual fruitfulness and service,

and is the sign of the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, for his

Church.

The grace of Jesus flowed forth at Cana at the

request of the Blessed Mother. May your Son,

through the intercession of Mary, pour out upon us

a new measure of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

as we join with all people of good will

to promote and protect the unique beauty of marriage.

May your Holy Spirit enlighten our society

to treasure the heroic love of husband and wife,

and guide our leaders to sustain and protect

the singular place of mothers and fathers

in the lives of their children.

Father, we ask that our prayers

be joined to those of the Virgin Mary,

that your Word may transform our service

so as to safeguard the incomparable splendor of marriage.

We ask all these things through Christ our Lord,

Amen.

Saints Joachim and Anne, pray for us.

THIS ‘N THAT

1. After 25 years of ministry at the Apostolic Nunciature (Vatican Embassy) in Washington, DC, Msgr. Maks will make the move back to our diocese in a month or so, reside at Cathedral Prep in Elmhurst, and continue to offer us his services. His weekend assistance has been a great bless-ing to our parish.

2. The Vino Nuevo Apostolate of our Hispanic community has just formed a Ministry of Consolation for persons who have lost loved ones. This ministry extends to the Latino tradition of the nove-nario (9-day novena), rosaries and/or wake services, and anniversary-of-death (or birthday) re-membrances for 3 years following the loss. In the Hispanic tradition, all ultimately serves the lift-ing or raising of the Holy Cross to enable those in grief to move forward in faith and trust. If you would like to contact this ministry, speak with one of our Pastoral Ministers: Paul Casiano, Maria Casiano or Bogar Casiano. As always, they are at your service.

TODAY: Sunday, February 10th

PEOPLE 1. Cecilia Khim of our Korean community has been the long-time liaison with our parish-at-large.

She now ends this commitment as she will spend time visiting her children in California, Illinois, and Florida. Thank you, Cecilia, for a job well done, and we welcome her successor, Deborah Kim.

2. Congratulations to Mariana Gavilan from our Family Mass Choir, who just won a Veritas Scholar-ship to St. Vincent Ferrer High School in Manhattan. Great job, Mariana!

3. Kudos also to Melissa Dinh who, along with her siblings Angela and Kevin, are longtime servers at Sunday’s 8 am Mass. Melissa has just graduated from Queens College with a Bachelor of Sci-ence degree in Nutrition and Exercise Science. We salute you on this achievement!
