Adult Club Outing

Join the St. Raphael's Adult Club on Friday, May 17 as we take a leisurely spring walk along the beautiful C&O Canal! Thanks to Bernie and Joe Matelis for arranging this perennial favorite event for our group!! We'll meet for carpooling at St. Raphael's at 10:00 AM. (unless you want to meet us directly at the Great Falls Tavern Visitors Center at 10:30 ). Parking admission is free for those arriving by car with a Golden Age Passport. Without a pass, parking is $15 per car. There is a short informational video at the Visitors Center which gives background information. When we arrive, a Park ranger will give us an orientation on the barge located on the canal. The entire group will take a short 20 minute walk to the Great Falls Overlook where the views are spectacular! The "falls" you see close to the Visitors Center are actually the Washington Aqueduct Observation Deck. Those who do not want to walk farther can remain in the Visitors Center until the others return.

Those who wish to continue will break into two groups. Bernie's group will take the River Trail, a fairly flat walk along the river's edge and through a rich floodplain forest for about 45 minutes.

Joe's group will take a slightly more adventurous walk, mostly uphill for the first half and then fairly flat for the second half, overlooking the Potomac river and then to the legendary "STOP GATE" bridge! This walk also takes approximately 45 minutes.

THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD RAIN OR SHINE. If it’s rainy, the presentations will be under cover and we just won’t walk the paths.

After our time at the Park, we will stop at Potomac Pizza in the Village, a perfect spot for a late lunch - plenty of table space, a varied menu, including beer and wine. Lunch is at individual expense.

Please call Bernie or Joe Matelis (301-424-8146) if you would like to sign up for this wonderful outdoor activity during a beautiful time of year in the Washington area. Let us know if you can drive a carpool, need a ride or would like to meet us at the Park. The link below gives some good background information on the Park. https://www.canaltrust.org/discoveries/

The Sunday TV Mass Do you know someone who can't get to Mass? Since 1952, the Archdiocese of Washington has produced a weekly televised Mass for those who are homebound, broadcast from the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It is a wonderful ministry for those members of our Catholic family who are unable to be physically present with a local worshiping community for the Sunday Eucharistic Liturgy. The Mass airs every Sunday at 10:30AM on WDCW-50:

• No cable; Dish or DIRECTV subscribers: Ch. 50

• Comcast: Ch. 23 in Washington, DC and Montgomery County; Ch. 3 in Prince George's County and Southern Maryland

ST. RAPHAEL CATHOLIC CHURCH ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND MAY 5, 2019

Vincentian reflection: In this Sunday’s Gospel, the disciples in their struggle finally recognize Jesus and proclaim “It is the Lord!” Have you considered answering the call to “help the poor recognize the Lord in their life”? The St.

Raphael Conference is in need of new parishioner volunteers. We are especially in need of bilingual volunteers for Spanish and French-speaking people who need assistance. Please contact Ursula Boesch, Interim President, at 240-988-7134. Today is Stone Soup Sunday: Please drop off your food donation before or after Mass to the truck parked in the circle of the parking lot. A volunteer should be present to accept your donation but in case there is no volunteer, kindly place your donation in the back of the truck. Thank you for helping the hungry who are served by the Food Pantry at St. Martin’s in Gaithersburg. God bless you! Labor of Love needs volunteers: Do you love to knit or crochet? The ladies of Labor of Love are in need of new volunteers to help produce the many hand-made items that are given in charity to those in need. The group meets at Raphael House on Fridays (2:00 to 4:00 PM) and new volunteers are always welcome. In fact, some of your long serving volunteers will be most happy to teach you! Contact Mitzi Sereno at 301-661-0849 or Mitzisereno@ comcast.net . They say that doing what you love is really no work at all.

“The importance of the family for the life and well-being of society entails a particular responsibility for society

to support and strengthen marriage and the family. Civil authority should consider it a grave duty to

acknowledge the true nature of marriage and the family, to protect and foster them, to safeguard public morality, and promote domestic prosperity”.

~ Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2210

Pray for Bethesda: Join other concerned people for the weekly prayer vigil every Monday morning from 9 until 11 AM on the public sidewalk north of the Wildwood Shopping Center (in front of the Sun Trust Bank) on Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda. Parking is restricted so visit www. prayforbethesda.com for instructions on legal parking. Contact Dick Retta (301-538-2500) or Missy Smith (202- 288-4984) for more information. Spread the word! Save the date: This year’s Annual Baby Bottle Campaign to support to the good work of Shady Grove Pregnancy Center is next weekend. Bottle distribution will occur at all Masses on May 11 and 12.

An argument to choose adoption rather than abortion: Last month, we looked at organizations that help women to keep rather than abort their babies. This month, we will focus on other choices available to women in crisis pregnancies that can actually protect both the child, mother and celebrate life. The most obvious choice is adoption. There is so much misinformation on adoption and frequently, women in a crisis pregnancy are not given good reasons to place their baby up for adoption. Considering adoption over abortion is the most selfless act a mother and father can make for their child. In many cases, the birth mother and father are not ready to be parents or they cannot afford to take care of another child in their family. Making the decision to place your child up for adoption is the first step. From that point, a mother (and father) should find a reputable adoption agency to assist them in the process. They can answer your numerous questions about the process and which options work best for them and their baby. Unfortunately for Marylanders, Catholic Charities had to close adoption services they once provided due to changes in laws as to who could adopt a baby. An alternative agency is Bethany Christian Services. Visit: https://www.bethanychristianservices.org for more information. An opportunity to serve at Missionaries of Charity: St. Raphael’s RFL Committee will offer the residents at Gift of Peace House on Otis Street in N.E. Washington, a Summer-Time BBQ on Sunday, June 23

rd in the afternoon.

We invite any parishioners or parish organizations to help us provide help with their time and/or donations. Non-perishable items needed include: hamburger and hotdog buns, pickles, ketchup, mustard, potato and tortilla chips, soda as well as a few non-food items, including laundry detergent, Pine-Sol disinfectant and baby wipes. If you wish to help, kindly email Meg Quickel at megquickel@ gmail.com or call Sandy Shamburek at 240-864-2514.

Jesus and the Reign of God While Jesus was a teacher, he did not come to set up an educational system. Rather, he came to make disciples, to change hearts and minds, and so to bring about the Reign of God. Those who know the basics of being a Catholic Christian are called to continue growing in faith themselves and to share the Good News with others. A great way to do that is by becoming a catechist or class aide. Contact Mary Beaudoin to learn more about becoming involved in the ministry of catechesis. SRRE is beginning to look ahead to the 2019-2020 SRRE year and to identify catechists for Sunday morning, Sunday night, Monday afternoon, Monday night, and Tuesday afternoon classes.

First Eucharist Reminders Attend Sunday (or Saturday night) Mass each week - because your child’s second, third, fourth, and 100th Communion are just as important as his/her first Communion. Now is the time to be fully active in the life of the Church and to form habits that will endure. By this time, families should have completed all of the God's Gift Eucharist workbook and Together parents booklet. Older children (grades 5, 6, 7, and 8) should have completed all of the Eucharist: We Give Thanks and Praise workbook. Completed workbooks are due at the First Communion rehearsal - Wednesday, May 8, at 5:00 PM (for May 11 First Communion) and Tuesday, May 14, at 6:00 PM (for May 18 First Communion).

Confirmation Student Reminders Confirmation I students are working on their Confirmation Service Projects. The project includes at least ten hours of service to people in need - by feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick, comforting the sorrowful, praying for the living and the dead, etc. Each candidate then writes an essay reflecting on their service in light of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Giving both time and talent, through acts of service, will help candidates to practice living a Christian life, as taught in the Gospels. Confirmation II: Bishop Bevard will be at St. Raphael to celebrate the Confirmation Mass on May 11. Bishop Fisher will be here to celebrate the Confirmation Mass on May 18. Rehearsals will be on Wednesday, May 8, at 7:00 PM. (for May 11 Confirmation) and Tuesday, May 14, at 7:15 PM. (for May 18 Confirmation).

Prayer Ministry Please pray for the children and teens who will be receiving sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation in the coming weeks. Pray that they will continue to grow in their knowledge and love of our faith. Pray that their family members and friends will support them in their faith and in their desire to be the presence of Christ in our world today.

Rejoice and Be Glad: On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World

In his apostolic letter Gaudete et Exsultate (in English, Rejoice and Be Glad), Pope Francis reminds us that we are all called to become saints. This week: Boldness and Passion Look at Jesus. His deep compassion reached out to others. It did not make him hesitant, timid or self-conscious, as often happens with

us. Quite the opposite. His compassion made him go out actively to preach and to send others on a mission of healing and liberation. Let us acknowledge our weakness, but allow Jesus to lay hold of it and send us too on mission. We are weak, yet we hold a treasure that can enlarge us and make those who receive it better and happier. Boldness and apostolic courage are an essential part of mission. Parrhesia is a seal of the Spirit . . . We need the Spirit’s prompting, lest we be paralyzed by fear and excessive caution, lest we grow used to keeping within safe bounds. . . Like the prophet Jonah, we are constantly tempted to flee to a safe haven. It can have many names: individualism, spiritualism, living in a little world, addiction, intransigence, the rejection of new ideas and approaches, dogmatism, nostalgia, pessimism, hiding behind rules and regulations. God is the eternal newness. He impels us constantly to set out anew, to pass beyond what is familiar, to the fringes and beyond. He takes us to where humanity is most wounded, where men and women, beneath the appearance of a shallow conformity, continue to seek an answer to the question of life’s meaning. God is not afraid! He is fearless! He is always greater than our plans and schemes. [#131-136]
