NAPLAN 2014: In May 2014 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed
by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess
the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools.
The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be
used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of
achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.
Background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be
collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to
ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.
The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 13 - 15 May 2014. Further information regarding NAPLAN will be emailed to
parents of Years 5, 7 and 9 at the end of this week.
Mr A Damo
From the Assistant Principal – Mission and Identity
The PROJECT COMPASSION APPEAL has commenced with great enthusiasm and contributions from our boys. Our
Project Compassion Team is superbly led by Mr Listo, along with the Year 12 Leaders. Our College Captain, Leon
Warren, spoke very encouragingly to the school, impressing in them the true meaning behind the giving in the Season
of Lent. I must congratulate this dedicated team of workers in not only raising funds but more importantly, raising
awareness of others less fortunate then ourselves.
LENT is about fasting, abstaining, making offerings for the benefit of others and about prayer. Project Compassion
allows us to continue our Lenten offerings. To ensure our young men have the opportunity for Prayer throughout Lent,
we are holding Morning Prayer to be led by our Year 11 Eucharistic Ministers, on the following four Fridays (14th, 21st,
28th March and 4th April ) in E2 commencing at 8.10am. It allows for our young men for spiritual renewal and reflection
as we contemplate further the significance of our Lenten Season. All are most welcome.
Our commitment to WILLOWOOD saw a very enjoyable afternoon of impromptu entertainment that had the
residence toe-tapping and singing along due to the talents of Benjamin John (Year 11) and his guitar. Ben was joined
by fellow Year 11 students, Mason Sacre and Tyrnan Collins along with Andre Xeni from Year 10. Mr Whelan also
played a real favourite for the residence, Waltzing Matilda.
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: At our Assembly last Friday, our Mission and Identity Prefects acknowledged that
Saturday 8 March was International Women’s Day. Sean Reidy and Ryan Leigh presented a reminder of the plight of
women around the world as well as highlighting the importance of respect and appreciation to be always shown to
all women in our lives. They then shared this reflection with our boys:
Women of Courage, women of Hope, women Suffering, women mourning.
Women living fully, women experiencing joy, women delighting in life.
Women knowing the interconnectedness of the human family.
Women boldly leading the transformation of unjust global structures.
Women seeking wisdom, women sharing wisdom.
Loving God, we celebrate your faithfulness and love. On this day we commit ourselves to the promotion of the full
humanity of all women everywhere. We know that whatever denies, diminishes or distorts the full humanity of women
is not of God.

DEBATING
“Juggling is a great way to exercise the mind and body by strengthening the pathways between the creative and
analytical parts of your brain – plus it is also fun! You will learn all the necessary skills and techniques for you to
become a Juggler. Everyone has the ability to juggle at some level; all it takes is practice, persistence and
persuading yourself that you can.” (Michael Hendriksen Sydney Community College.)
Michael contacted me on Sunday afternoon. His email said: “This is Michael Hendriksen - I'm the juggler from the
Sydney Community College! Apologies for not contacting you already, the message was somehow caught in my
spam filter. I shall call you on Monday in order to discuss coming in to teach your debaters how to juggle. I'm looking
forward to it! I actually used to debate as well - I was part of the winning team in the Blue Mountains Debating
Competition (what feels like) a long time ago.” YIHARRAHHH!!! We have a juggler J. As soon as we can confirm a
date for his training session you will all know.
Training has commenced for 2014. Year 7 and Year 11 need to meet their ex-Pius debater coaches this Friday
afternoon from 3.30pm to 5pm in the TCR. Year 7 will also have the Year 11 debaters as their assistant coaches and
we will all be meeting in the TCR after school on a Monday from 3.30pm for a training session.
Other teams have organised their training times and students should contact their coaches if they are unsure of these
times.
Our ‘friendly’ against Brigidine will ‘kick off’ at 4.30pm on Wednesday 19th March. We should all be out of here by
6pm. The ‘friendly’ against Campbelltown, St. Greg’s will commence at 6pm on Friday 21st March. We should
conclude around 9.30pm (ish).

CHATSWOOD LIBRARY A CONNECTION WORTH MAKING
Chatswood Library like many public libraries around the country has become an exciting place to gather in the
digital age. Students can gain access to a range of digital information as well as access to excellent print based
resources.
The St. Pius community is blessed to have a resource of the standard of Chatswood Library at our doorstep and your
teacher librarians are working in partnership with the public librarians to increase opportunities to utilise this fabulous
resource.
For example, Junior School tours the Chatswood Library during a library lesson. Students can see what’s on offer and
learn how to sign–up.
For Senior Students a visit from the Chatswood librarians ensures services and facilities
designed to support HSC studies are promoted. Recently, Year 11 Students were
excited by the prospect of free HSC study seminars within a library open till 9pm.
Chatswood Library’s enormous print and electronic collection is promoted in research
tasks with links on our library catalogue.
New students are encouraged to join the library but parent’s permission is a
requirement.
But, there are other ways this important partnership is working. Chatswood Library is
thrilled to have History Department’s Mr Tony Cunneen as the invited speaker for History
Week with a presentation on the Great War and Willoughby.
Chatswood Library is keenly aware that
one of the country’s most famous poets, Francis Webb was a
Chatswood resident and an ex-student of our college and they have an
enviable collection of Webb material. This year we are celebrating its
existence together and Year 11 students will hear Macquarie University
academic Dr Toby Davidson on Webb’s fascinating life. As well, one
lucky St. Pius student is set to join the leading lights of the literary fraternity
in a Poetry Reading of the great man’s work.

SPX 2nds Cricket Report – ISA Div2 Grand Final- V All Saints College 1sts at Bathurst
This game was not about to be a repeat of round 7, played in Bathurst, only a month ago, where All Saints affirmed
their place on the top of the table. The match start was delayed due to heavy rain in Bathurst on Friday, and in the
toss, the coin landed in the mud, on its edge. SPX won the second toss, and elected to send All Saints into bat on a
slippery pitch. The game start was delayed, while the sun dried out the turf, and the game overs had to be reduced
accordingly to 46.
Our SPX bowlers were off to a great start with Dominic Easy (1/18 off 8) and Tom Diggins (0/13 off 6) giving little
opportunity to the All Saints batsmen. All Saints were averaging one run per over till the first drinks break at over 13.
Another wicket fell, before an All Saints mid order partnership started to do some damage to the score line. The
division’s top batsman was dismissed on 52 with a Liam Mann catch, off a great bowling by Matt Kennedy (3/12 off
6). With the mid order removed, Luke Humphrey (2/15 off 6) took two wickets, and Michael Jordan two great
catches. The tail enders posted a respectable target of 7/135 for Pius to chase down in 46 overs – weather permitting.
After a late lunch, St Pius set about scoring some runs in the warm afternoon sun. With a possible thunderstorm
forecast, SPX had to play at least 30 overs, and be ahead at that point to make it a victory. SPX was indeed ahead at
over 30, but the threatening clouds had cleared.
Opener Liam Mann (27) and Luke Humphrey (15) set up an early partnership and started making inroads toward out
target score. Mid order batsmen Jackson Brislan (15) and Dominic Easy (18) brought the score line up to a healthy 111
in the 40th over with 3 wickets in hand. This game was going to go down to the wire, with strong support for both
teams from the crowd. As the pendulum swung between favoring All Saints with wickets, or SPX with runs, this was
turning out to be one worthy grand final competition. With two overs to go, we were down to our last batsmen, with
9 runs to win.
Unfortunately SPX fell short by 7 runs in the second last over of the game. SPX being all out for 127 in the forty-fifth
over (of 46). Credit is due to the All Saints First Eleven for a very entertaining game of cricket and a very competitive
season.

RUGBY
Team St Pius X Rugby: Express yourself and demonstrate your talents in 2014
One of the great rugby players of all time became the most capped test player in history last Saturday when Brian
O’Driscoll played his final test on Irish soil for Ireland. He has one more to play in Paris next Saturday. In Saturday’s
game against Italy he demonstrated not only the technical competencies required playing in the centre, his position;
but also the unique and innovative skills he possesses. He makes passes others can’t. He reads situations better than
others and he has the Irish laughing eyes that says he’s really enjoying himself
As I watched his performance I thought how right it is that he should be able to display such passing and running skills,
none of which can be found in any coaching manual. Brian has had those skills from an early age and fortunately no
one has tried to coach them out of him. At the end of the game the reception he received was tumultuous and
rightly so as he has entertained for so many years.
I want all the young players at St Pius X to express themselves on the rugby field and play with freedom. You all start
with a range of skills, some you will develop, some you will discover as you learn and play the game. If you can add
enthusiasm to your skill set then you will maximise both your enjoyment and your chances of representative
recognition.
Turn up to every training session ready to express yourself as there is no better feeling in the world than the one of
exhaustion at the end of a great session!!
We press the GO button next Tuesday the 18th - see you then.
Mike Penistone - Rugby development Officer

Mr S Yue - Senior Football Convenor
NSTA TENNIS – Would the rest and lack of play due to two weeks of wet weather have a positive or negative effect
on results? Well, Saturday’s tennis at Talus Street served-up some mixed results.
St. Pius 3 lost to Redlands 3 (0-6)
St. Pius 6 defeated Review 1 (5-1)
St. Pius16 lost to St Pius 15 (1-5 )
St. Pius 7 defeated Relands 7 (4—2)
St. Pius 9 lost to Matchpoint 3 (0-6)
St. Pius 10 defeated NSBS 7 (3 sets 29 games– 3 sets 23 games)
St. Pius 12 lost to St. Pius 13 (1-5)
St. Pius 14 defeated Reddam 4 (5 – 1)
St. Pius 10 felt a strange sense of deju-vu, as just as in Round 1 they found themselves with the games drawn going
into the last set against North Sydney Boys High School. This time, the opposition had no answers for Niall Darby’s
barrage of missile-like serves and crafty returns with Niall taking the set comfortably 6-0.
While the scoreboard shows that St. Pius 15 convincingly defeated St. Pius 16, this was in sharp contrast to the lengthy,
close battle that raged on court from set to set. Pius teams revelled in the close competition.
At Kooroora it was a St Pius-a-thon with Pius 21 v 24 and Pius 22 v 23. There were some fabulous long and close
matches in the doubles and the results could have gone either way. In the end, St Pius 22 were convincing winners
over St Pius 23
At Epping, Pius 4 had a great challenging game against NSBHS 2. The games were close but the Pius boys were
triumphant, as were Pius 2 against Redlands 4 at Cammeray.
Keep up the encouraging talk on court and good luck next Saturday. The decoded draw is included in Woodchatta
Extras this week for the last time - from now on parents will need to refer to previous copies of Woochatta.

ST PIUS X U12 BLUE – 1/3/14 – SF SPX Blue 10/81 (H. Clayton 29) defeated by North Sydney Gold 8/101 (O. Sheather 2/11, M. Bradley 2/15)
On a rainy wet morning down at Gore Hill Park, it was with great disbelief that the umpires gave the go ahead to play. The
boys were as enthusiastic as ever – the parents a little less so.
North Sydney Gold won the toss and elected to bat. Their opening batsmen, one with more than a passing resemblance to
Clive Lloyd, were tough to get out in the wet, sticky conditions.
After they scored 20 quick runs, Matt Bradley eventually broke the partnership with a brilliant return to the keeper, Alec
Paterson for a run out. Matt created further havoc when he took 2 consecutive wickets in the 7th over. Everyone held their
breath for the next ball, hoping for the illusive hat-trick. Although that was not to be, Matt finished the over with his first
maiden. Another of their batsmen dug in scoring 22 runs before Keifer O’Brien clean bowled him. Jack Healey took a cheap
wicket before he too executed a great return to keeper for a runout. Unfortunately, he rolled his ankle in the process and
was unable to bat. Oli Sheather, bowling beautifully all day, completed his final over with 2 consecutive wickets – both clean
bowls. We’ll be holding our breath all the way til next season to see if Oli manages a hat-trick! North Sydney Gold finished
their innings on 101, certainly an achievable tally for the Blues so no amount of rain was going to stop them from trying.
Zach Bull and Harry Clayton opened the batting with a strong partnership that lasted for 7 overs before Zach was bowled
out. The next wicket fell cheaply and Harry retired on 13 to have a rest and warm up. Bailey Sutton and David Cass took over
and although not a high scoring partnership, did preserve their wickets well. At drinks we were 4/44, only 4 runs behind our
opposition at the same point. For the first time we saw an opposition team that genuinely looked concerned. Unfortunately,
the next few wickets went cheaply until Adam Greenwood came to the crease. He was eventually joined by Harry,
returning from retirement. Together they batted on until the 31st over, when Harry was unfortunately run out. He’d scored a
fantastic 29 runs including 2 *4’s. Adam had preserved his wicket for a full 13 overs, remaining not out. This was his longest
stint at the crease this season. Our final score was 81. With a bit more aggression with the bat, we could have made it over
the line in this match.
So, the Blues sign off for this year. They’ve all improved so much over this season, but above all, they’ve enjoyed playing
together, learning together and having a whole lot of fun together.

ST PIUS X U14 RED – RAIN DELAY - REPLAY OF RND 15 SPX Red 7/133 (J Maclaine 23no, B Jones 18no, T Lowe 10, P Howe 5 on his birthday, J Brown 40no, A Bain 33no, L O’Connell
the winning run no) Defeated by SPX Green 5/134 (N Slack 3/10, P Howe 1/10, L Williams 1/15, R Kelleher 2/18, P Leahy 1/0 )
SPX Green Won the toss and elected to bowl on the pristine Oxford Falls pitch. The weather a perfect cricket day, a light
breeze to temper the late summer sun. Brislan and Jones faced off the new ball, a less familiar task of late but both
challenged the line and length of Williams and Bain. It was the first change bowlers of Kelleher and Hopkins that made the
first breakthrough with an LBW apiece.
Jones shuffled partners with May taking up the striking role but another breach this time by Leahy just before the drinks break
saw the red team amble to 3/56. The batting plan saw Lowe slip in for the not out Jones at the break and join Maclaine for a
short sharp blast, having scored 10 runs in his entire career, Tom shone with solid strikes and great running to reach his a new
PB of 10.
Continued quality bowling restricted the run rate and took crucial wickets at opportune times, the Red team continued to
pursue the challenge but when the more traditional batsmen arrived much of the time had been lost.
One hundred and thirty three runs was about par, a challenge to get but certainly not out of reach. The view taken by the
Green team batsman would be build a foundation, make a start and see where the path leads.
Slack was having none of this of course, his second over saw Hopkins caught by Thompson, his third saw good mate Kelleher
walking back having claimed the catch himself. Brown and Williams set about a rebuild whilst the Red team rotated their
attack effectively. Drinks saw the Green team only 9 runs shy of Red team mark which both teams would have used as
evidence of the chance of success.
The Red team used all 12 players to bowl and whilst there was an occasional erant over, the run rate was pinned down
substantially limiting the effect of the strong middle order of Williams, Bain and Carrall. As the required rate climbed to 17 off
the last 2 overs there was nothing left but to hit out, 10 runs made a big impact and transferred the pressure back onto the
Red team. Captain Robertson tossed the ball to Slack seeking resolution and first ball saw a sharp caught behind to dismiss
Carrall. An uncharacteristic wide saw an extra ball bowled, a bye, a single and the Greens were a run behind.
Parker took the gamble but delivered the ball to Slack who took his 4th wicket this time a run out and the sidelines began
erupting. 2 balls, 2 runs. Bain faced a good ball and secured the draw leaving OConnell to face the last, a fast delivery
swung into the stumps and made contact with Liam’s swinging bat to pop over the top of the field.
As it turned out a great way to finish the season for both sides, success was written not in victory but in the manner in which
the game was played. Respect is earned and players on both sides have enjoyed 2 great battles. Some of these players will
no doubt play together in years to come, they will do so confidently having played out a memorable moment of SPX
Cricket.

Boys want to play football…
Grading recommendations went to Mr Yue last week and squad lists are up at school. Congratulations to the boys
who were lucky enough to make it in to SPX squads for our upcoming ISA season. Commiserations to the many boys
who could not be accommodated in college teams. The FC has emailed families so that, should you wish, boys can
group together and try to play at local clubs for this season. Chatswood Rangers, Wakehurst, Northbridge, and
Lindfield have indicated there are player vacancies in some of their teams. I know this may not feel satisfactory for
some families, and I can only suggest you direct any concerns you may have to the college.
The college executive has tried very hard to increase the number of SPX teams who can play in the ISA competition.
There’s been some success. SPX will field 13ABC&D, 14A&B, 15A&B, 16A&B, and four Opens teams (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th XIs).
Any Open age players who haven’t registered should do so now at:

the first week of the April Holidays. Exact dates will be confirmed shortly, but will include bus transport to and from
Chatswood. This skills camp is open to all SPX students. Stay tuned!
AGM
It was disappointing to not see any new faces at the AGM last week. The current committee has worked very hard to
improve the quality of your football experience at SPX but we do need some more help. We have an ambitious
agenda for 2014 and some additional “general members” to undertake many of the smaller tasks of the FC would be
welcome. It’s not too late. Just come to the next meeting on Tues 1 April or contact the FC to offer your help. Thank
you! All the new office bearers are the old office bearers! We are all continuing on doggedly this year. Thank you to
the dedicated committee.
