Luke 12:49-53 In this gospel, Jesus is shocking! Jesus has a fire for accomplishing his mission and is single-minded in doing so. His very message is divisive because it calls others to a radical way of living—self-giving for the good of others. We must make a choice to follow him, to choose to speak God’s word and preach the values consistent with God’s reign. Divisions occur simply by being faithful to God’s message. This is the real shock value of the gospel: being a faithful disciple of Je-sus will instigate a clash of values, of principles, of priorities. This choice can result in divisions, even within families, because all us do not make the same choice to follow Jesus.

Dear Father, Why aren’t we all Jewish in Religion, as Jesus was born Jewish? What is the difference in our religions? Curious Kid Dear Curious Kid, When Jesus was born into our world he was born in Palestine and the main religion at that time was Judaism. That means that a majority of the people living there were Jewish. But we also know that it was a time of Roman occupation and thus the Roman religion was also present. Along with Judaism and Roman Paganism there were other forms of Paganism that were Middle-Eastern. When Jesus started his ministry he started to show the numerous wrongs in Judaism and sought to educate the people about this. That is why he ultimately was put to death. He was advocating a religion that was distinct from Judaism and the Jewish authorities had him condemned and crucified. The whole of the New Testament in the Bible shows and talks about the many things Christ saw as needing some changes if people wanted to live in God’s favor. Over time the Jewish people, in Christ’s view, had wandered far from the basic teachings of their ancestors and Christ tried to have them see this. Jewish people at that time, and still today, do not recognize Jesus Christ as the Son of God, the Messiah. They are still awaiting the coming of the Messiah (the Savior) and thus Jews cannot be Christians, nor can a Christian be Jewish. We do refer to Jews as our older brothers and sisters in the faith. Yet, as Christians, we cannot understand ourselves apart from our Jewish heritage, just as, we cannot understand the New Testament apart from the Old Testament. The Old Testament is the prism through which we read the New Testament. We know that the Old Testament is the holy texts for Jews, and thus we can understand how we are closely related in faith. We believe in the same God as Father, or Abba; we share in a monotheistic religion (the belief that there is only one God,) as opposed to a polytheistic religion (the belief that there are many gods.) It is just as in many things in life, we can focus on our differences or we can focus on what we share in common, and we should be able to do that with mutual respect. Father
