Be It Ever So Humble By Rev. Steven Bondi

Be it ever so humble, there is no

place like home; those are the words of the long-ago poem.

A traveler returning to the place where they live, the comfort and safety that home has to give. I do love my home, though I now live alone. The mortar and glass, the tile and the stone, the carpet I chose, and the furnishings too;

they welcome me in and give comfort anew. But what if your home is a place you must stay,

from morning to night, and day after day. The comfort grows colder with days passing on, and some of the peace to be sure is now gone.

I leave only seldom to complete sanctioned tasks, and the people I do see are covered in masks.

How strange is this world that we all live in now; all together in some ways, but separate somehow.

Hand shaking and hugs are not given to me; we all have to keep proper distance you see. I know this is only for weeks and not years;

but that comforting thought does not calm all my fears. There is no denying the health and job crisis;

it is not to be brushed off despite our devices... and yet I see positive people all round.

They go to their windows to make joyous sound, and come up with wonderful ways to keep going.

I see the creative and artistic grace flowing. Though the thing that attacks us may wear a small crown;

it has not the power to crush us all down. Though now I may not see the way or the how;

I know with faith we will get through this somehow.

April 26, 2020 (Third Sunday of Easter) Prayer of the Faithful

Our faith and hope are in God who raised

Jesus Christ from the dead. Let us bring our prayers before the throne of grace.

For all in our Church who are making their journey of faith

and looking to recognize Christ in everyone they meet, let us pray to the Lord.

For an end to human trafficking and slavery and a growing

appreciation for the dignity and worth of every person, let us pray to the Lord.

For all who spread the Good News of the risen Christ

in the Church’s missions throughout the world, let us pray to the Lord.

For all whose livelihoods are diminished or at risk

because of the necessary restrictions in place during the Coronavirus pandemic, let us pray to the Lord.

For all who bring new life into the world and help to sustain it by tending and nurturing the growing things of the earth,

let us pray to the Lord.

For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from the Coronavirus, and for all who have died,

let us pray to the Lord.

For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all our intentions spoken and unspoken,

let us pray to the Lord.

Gracious God, you guide us on our life’s journey

with sure signs of your love and concern. Hear these prayers which we bring you today

and grant them through Jesus Christ our risen Lord.

Sunday Readings for April 26, 2020 (Third Sunday of Easter) Reading 1 (Acts 2:14, 22–23) Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed: “You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen to my words. You who are Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazarene was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know. This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it. For David says of him: I saw the Lord ever before me, with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted; my flesh, too, will dwell in hope, because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.

“My brothers, one can confidently say to you about the patriarch David that he died and was buried, and his tomb is in our midst to this day. But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne, he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he abandoned to the netherworld nor did his flesh see corruption. God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses. Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured him forth, as you see and hear.” Responsorial Psalm (Ps 16:1–2, 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11) R. (11a) Lord, you will show us the path of life. or: R. Alleluia. Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge; I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.” O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup, you it is who hold fast my lot. R. Lord, you will show us the path of life. or: R. Alleluia. I bless the LORD who counsels me; even in the night my heart exhorts me. I set the LORD ever before me; with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. R. Lord, you will show us the path of life. or: R. Alleluia. Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my body, too, abides in confidence; because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption. R. Lord, you will show us the path of life. or: R. Alleluia. You will show me the path to life, abounding joy in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever. R. Lord, you will show us the path of life. or: R. Alleluia. Reading 2 (1 Pt 1:17–21) Beloved: If you invoke as Father him who judges impartially according to each one’s works, conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning, realizing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct, handed on by your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ as of a spotless unblemished lamb. He was known before the foundation of the world but revealed in the final time for you, who through him believe in God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. Gospel (Lk 24:13–35) That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?” And he replied to them, “What sort of things?” They said to him, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread. In today’s Gospel, we hear a story of two disciples who are walking on the road to Emmaus. They meet a man, who is a stranger to them, but they hold a conversation with him and ultimately invite him to join them, and stay with them. The disciples are leaving their home in Jerusalem. Their friend, Jesus, had been crucified. They are trying to make sense of it, but feel that all hope is gone. It is not until they are sharing a meal with the stranger that they recognize him as Jesus. They then go back to Jerusalem to share the good news! I can relate to these disciples. In this trying time of isolation and despair for so

many people, it is hard to recognize Jesus. We may be feeling abandoned and sad that he is allowing this virus to control our lives, sicken and even take the lives of thousands of people. Like the disciples, we must open our eyes and see that God is right here with us, even in this most difficult time. He is watching us, he is supporting us, he is lighting the way for us...if we only have eyes to see. Invite Jesus to stay with you. Include him in your daily thoughts and actions. This week we celebrate four catechists, all who have served St. Philip’s RE Program for many years! Please hold them and their families up in prayer. Bonnie Daniello has been teaching kindergarten for the past nine years! She engages the little ones with activities and stories that teach them the basic fundamentals of our faith. They learn important Bible stories, prayers, and are introduced to the church environment by way of tours and hands-on learning. Bonnie lays the foundation for their Eucharist formation. Bonnie also coordinates the Kid Vid Cinema workshop at Vacation Bible School. We are blessed to have Bonnie teaching our kindergarteners!

Salvatore Ferenzi has taught sixth grade for the past 12 years on Wednesday nights and focuses on prayer and enrichment. His lectionary-based teaching engages the students in the Gospel reading for the upcoming weekend. He brings it to their level and emphasizes the importance of living the Gospel message. Sal is a co-coordinator of the games workshop at Vacation Bible School, he sings in the adult choir, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus! Sal’s easy and gentle mannerism is a gift to the junior high students, who look up to him as a true role model of faith!

Philma Hinkhouse has been co-teaching third grade for the past nine years. She is a gifted prayer leader and shares her ability through story telling and reflection on the Gospel. Philma has graciously taken on different roles over the years, as need presented itself. She has substituted, been a lead catechist, and an aide. Whatever the need, Philma always steps up cheerfully. She also volunteers for Vacation Bible School, is a member of the adult choir, and is instrumental in helping families through St. Vincent de Paul. What a gift Philma is to our parish!

Nick Maucieri has taught seventh grade for the past 12 years and focuses on morality and right judgment. Nick teaches by sharing stories and bringing current affairs into his classroom discussions. Students learn how to put their faith into action in everyday life. Nick engages the students in meaningful prayer with a prayer circle during each class. A holiday never goes by that Nick doesn’t have a special

treat for the students! Nick also co-coordinates the games workshop at Vacation Bible School. The junior high students are enriched by having Nick as a catechist and mentor!

On the road to Emmaus, Jesus walks alongside two downcast disciples who do not recognize him. They are fixated on the dashing of their hopes that Jesus would be “the one to redeem Israel.” Only through Jesus’ interpretation of the Scriptures and breaking of the bread do they come to know him and have their faith rekindled. The disciples describe their experience with Jesus on the road to Emmaus as one in which “our hearts [were] burning within us.” Earlier in Luke’s Gospel Jesus had told his disciples, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” (Luke

12:49); NABRE). It seems this fire is to start in the hearts of his disciples who will carry the blaze to others as the light of the risen Christ spreads throughout the world. Source: Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press

I hope that you are all in good health during this unsettling time of quarantine as we are separated from our loved ones and making sacrifices to protect the health of those in our community. We know that the students miss their teachers and friends and the routine of being at school. Please know that our teachers and staff miss your family as well, and they are doing all they can to support your children at this time. As you know, our operating budget relies on the revenue provided by tuition as well as Sunday offertory collections. With live Masses suspended during this time, we have

experienced a fall off in offertory, which in turn means that we will fall short of our budget. We are asking everyone to mail in your tuition payments and your regular parish contribution. Doing this will ensure that we have the funds available to help us have the financial stability we need at this time. It is so important that you continue to support our school and parish if you can. In addition, the Parent Association is organizing a virtual fundraiser to build school spirit and to replace at least some of the funds that were to be raised by the Glow Run, which was canceled for this year. The fundraiser, named "Spartan Strong" will begin the week of April 27 and continue with daily challenges until May 1. Each day will present a new challenge for students to perform. Examples of the challenges are: outdoor art challenge, joke of the day challenge, fitness obstacle course challenge, talent showcase challenge, and cooking challenge. Families are asked to take a picture or video of their student performing the challenge and send it to family and friends with the link https://aesbid.com/ELP/SPARTAN20/. Spartan Strong yard signs will also be available for purchase to show your Spartan pride and support on the same website. Of course, many people have been financially affected by the Coronavirus crisis and that may affect your ability to participate in our fundraiser. If this is the case, please know that we pray for you and your family and hope that your situation will improve soon. Please know that the Catholic Education Foundation (http://cefjoliet.org/) may be one source of

our community. Please keep them in your prayers as well.

Do you have questions about the Catholic faith? Send them to Carol Schubert for answers… How can we distinguish serious sins (mortal sins) from less serious

(venial) sins? Serious sin destroys the divine power of love in a person’s heart, without which there can be no eternal beatitude. Hence, it is also called mortal sin. Serious sin breaks with God, whereas venial sin only strains the relationship with him. [1852-1861, 1874]

Many people may be experiencing depression during this mandatory quarantine period. How are you handling it? I think there are a few things we can do to help ourselves avoid feeling down. Recently I heard a podcast from someone who regularly works from home, and he shared what he does to keep himself motivated. He said that maintaining a regular routine is foremost; getting up and getting dressed as if he was going out; beginning the day with a list of things to accomplish; taking time for physical

activity; communicating with others in both a business and social setting; and scheduling a regular break time from these interactions. All of this will give us a purpose to each day as well as taking care of ourselves in a healthy way because, as the body goes, so does the mind. From a spiritual perspective, regular prayer is important. We have opportunities to watch Mass on television and through our parish website. We all miss the time that we gather as a community of faith and long to be together, to see each other, and to share our lives as before. Our personal prayer is our chance to voice our fears and hopes to the God who loves us and will guide us through this. For most of us, we do not often get to sit in silence and truly listen to the voice of God. What better time for this than now. I knew a man who was very successful in finance, and the first 20 minutes of every day he sat in his office and spent time in prayer. He instructed his secretary that unless their lives were in danger he was not to be interrupted. This time to dedicate himself and his work to God was the reason for his success. God is always with us...but how often are we present to him? If you have found something that helps you get through each day and want to share it, please email it to me at [email protected]. This service is free and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. People seeking assistance will remain anonymous and will provide only their first name and zip code, which

enables the service to link you to a counselor in your area who is knowledgeable about available local resources. In addition, the phone number can be used to seek help and

guidance on other critical issues during the pandemic. Residents can text keywords like “unemployment,” “food,” or “shelter,” according to the governor’s office, and they

will receive additional information in response.

“We are living in a deeply unprecedented moment, and holding the emotional ramifications of that inside will only be harder on you,” Governor Pritzker said. “Please know that you don’t have to feel it all alone.

I want you to know that we’re here to help.”

Baptism Information: Baptisms are celebrated on the second & fourth Sunday of each month. A pre-Baptism program must be attended by the parents. Please call the rectory to register for a program. Marriage Information: Please call the rectory to make arrangements at least six months (a year is preferred) in advance of the wedding date. It is recommended you do not rent reception facilities until your wedding date is confirmed with the pastor. Your preferred wedding date may be unavailable, and we do not want you to lose your deposit with the reception venue. Parish Registration: New families are welcome and are asked to register at the rectory. Also, previously registered parishioners are asked to notify us of any address changes. Emergency Sick or Anointing Calls: Please notify us immediately of any serious illness in your family. If you have a hospitalized loved one who would like a visit, please call the rectory with contact information since the hospitals and hospices no longer notify parishes. Please do not wait until the last minute to have someone anointed. There are always accidents/emergencies, but sometimes there is less panic when the anointing can be done prior to someone passing.

We now have available low-gluten hosts which make it possible for people who have celiac disease or allergies to wheat or gluten to be able to receive communion. If you have celiac disease or an allergy to wheat or gluten, please let us know before Mass so that arrangements can be made

for you to be able to receive communion at Mass.
