November 22, 2014 eNews Thanksgiving Baskets St. Philip is in need of turkeys for our Thanksgiving baskets or a $10.00 donation towards a turkey. Please remember us when you shop and when the stores are having turkey specials. We are expecting to serve 350 families. Other items needed: Green beans, corn, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, stuffing, cranberries, dinner rolls, cornbread and cake mix. There will be a box in the Narthex for all items except the turkey. Widow’s Mite Bake Sale The annual Widow`s Mite Pre-Thanksgiving Bake Sale will be this Sunday, November 23rd after both services. We are asking members to bake and buy Thanksgiving desserts in order to raise money for the Widow`s Mite Fund. This year we gave 7 book awards of $100 each. If you are unable to bake or buy, please donate to this worthy cause. Money raised will be used for the 2015- 2016 school year. Please do not bring store brought goods as they do not sell well. Thanking you in advance. Widow`s Mite Committee Adult Sunday School Christmas Projects This year, the Adult Sunday School class is inviting you to participate in two Christmas projects. 1. We will be collecting new children’s books (picture books, chapter books and information books as well as Bibles and other Christian books). The books will be distributed to parents on the day they pick up their Christmas baskets from the Food Pantry for use as gifts for their children. Please put your donations for this project in the designated box in the Narthex. 2. We are also collecting new blankets. These blankets will be taken to a local shelter. Please put your donations for this project in the designated box – also in the Narthex. St. Philip Chapter of the Daughters of the King The next meeting will be held today - Saturday, November 23 at 10:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall. The group will be finishing their study, Growing in Christ. Please join us. Fyi. The group will not meet in December. Volunteers needed for the Food Pantry The Food Pantry needs volunteers to come in on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. to assist our clients if they wish to sign up for Thanksgiving baskets. Absalom(Jones(was(America’s(first(black(priest.(Born(into(slavery(in(Delaware(at(a(time(when(slavery(was(being(debated( as( immoral( and( undemocratic,( he( taught( himself( to( read,( using( the(New( Testament( as( one( of( his(resources.(At(the(age(of(16,(Jones(was(sold(to(a(shopkeeper(in(Philadelphia(where(he(attended(a(night(school(for( blacks,( operated( by( Quakers.( Following( the( purchase( of( his( own( freedom( in( 1784,( Jones( served( as( lay(minister(for(the(black(membership(at(St.(George’s(Methodist(Episcopal(Church.((

The(active(evangelism(of(Jones(and(that(of(his(friend,(Richard(Allen,(greatly(increased(black(membership(at(St.(George’s.( Alarmed( by( the( rise( in( black( attendance,( the( vestry( decided( to( segregate( blacks( into( an( upstairs(gallery(without(notice.(When(ushers(attempted(to(remove(the(black(congregants,(the(resentful(group(exited(the(church.(This(exodus(triggered(the(establishment(of(the(Free(African(Society(by(Jones(and(Allen(in(1787(to(aid(in(the(emancipation(of(slaves(and(to(offer(sustenance(and(spiritual(support(to(widows,(orphans,(and(the(poor.(

In(1794(Jones(and(Allen,(with(the(assistance(of(local(Quakers(and(Episcopalians,(established(the(“First(African(Church”(in(Philadelphia.(Shortly(after(the(establishment(that(same(year,(the(African(Church(applied(to(join(the(Protestant(Episcopal(Church,(laying(before(the(diocese(three(requirements:(the(Church(must(be(received(as(an(already(organized(body;( it(must(have(control(over( it’s(own(affairs;(and(Jones(must(be( licensed(as( layZreader(and(if(qualified,(ordained(as(its(minister.(

Upon(acceptance(into(the(Diocese(of(Pennsylvania,(the(church(was(renamed(the(African(Episcopal(Church(of(St.(Thomas.(The(following(year(Jones(became(a(deacon(but(was(not(ordained(a(priest(until(1804,(nine(years(later.( At( 58( years( old,( he( became( the( first( black( American( priest.( He( continued( to( be( a( leader( in( his(community,( founding( a( day( school( (as( blacks( were( excluded( from( attending( public( school),( the( Female(Benevolent(Society,(and(an(African(Friendly(Society.(In(1800(he(called(upon(Congress(to(abolish(the(slave(trade(and(to(provide(for(gradual(emancipation(of(existing(slaves.(Jones(died(in(1818.(!
