St. Peter’s SchoolAnnual Report 2016-17
The St. Peter’s School 2016-2017 Annual Report
honors alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty,
staff, and friends whose generosity enables our
students to fulfill their potential.
This online format enables SPS to be a good
steward of your gifts and to reduce the impact
on the environment, eliminating production
and mailing costs. This report catalogs the
dedication and devotion of our community in
turning shared goals and aspirations into reality
though gifts received between July 1, 2016
and June 30, 2017.
Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information and listing in this report. Please accept our sincere apologies if any errors or omissions have been made. Please bring oversights to the attention of the Director of Advancement, Clare Dych.
Letter from the Headmaster
Dear SPS Community:
One of the privileges of being the Headmaster of a Preschool to 8th Grade school is observing the special themes and concepts that carry throughout a student’s career at SPS. Watching a student progress from the discovery stage to basic understanding and finally a nuanced, sophisticated grasp on a topic is truly amazing and a pleasure to witness each year. Many of our alumni, from high school students to retirees, have identified the lessons learned from St. Peter’s School signature experiences like Declamation as what prepared them for the rest of their education and gave them a solid foundation for their careers and adult aspirations.
While we return to traditions like Declamation each year, we are also constantly seeking ways to expand upon and improve all of our programming. To that end, we officially named Mrs. Sandra Rekstad as the Director of our Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) program. Under Sandee’s guidance, our students have been able to explore real-world STEAM topics such as constructing a boat. Finally, we decided to transform a former classroom space into a STEAM Lab designed for the needs of our youngest students.
2016-2017 also saw our faculty preparing for the official launch of our Speech, Presentation, Acting, Rhetoric, and Communication (SPARC) course, which aims to help students to present a topic confidently in a public setting. Students were able to show off their skills at the Carver Science Fair, during high school interviews, National History Day, and acting auditions. SPARC participants emerge from the school year with not only better knowledge of their special topics, but the ability to effectively present what they have learned with others.
All this to say—here at SPS, we are first and foremost a school, and our number one goal is offering a top-notch education. We are also firmly committed to protecting the magic and wonderment of childhood as we impart the skills our students will need to continue their education and become successful adults. We are proud of all we have accomplished in the last year and there is much to look forward to in the coming years as the staff and faculty continue to make this an even better place to be a student.
All my best,
Shawn Kelly, Headmaster

“ SPS has a different feeling
from other schools. I came to
St. Peter’s School last year and
right away I felt like I could
belong and fit in. We’re like
a family because we’re
smaller and everyone,
even in different grades,
can be friends.”

“ I included St. Peter’s School in my Estate Plan because of my late wife’s involvement as President of the Parent’s Association and subsequently as Vice President of the Board, as well as the unique educational program experienced by our two children, Sandy and Betsy.
Sandy has very fond memories of St. Peter’s and the great teachers; he still tries to visit the school when in Philadelphia. Betsy loved St. Peter’s because of the way creativity was encouraged and the beautiful traditions like May Day and Harvest Festival. Both Sandy and Betsy, who graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy after we moved to New Hampshire, found that St. Peter’s created a sense of community that was warm and welcoming.”

FACULTY AND STAFF SCHOLARSHIP FUND
For the 2016-2017 school year, SPS faculty and staff voted to create a Faculty and Staff Scholarship Fund, which raised over $9,000 in support of student tuition assistance. More importantly, 100% of our faculty and staff members participated in the giving campaign, a clear indicator of the support we feel for the mission of St. Peter’s School. We are very grateful to have such a generous team here.
14
EITC/OSTC PROGRAM
In the Spring of 2017, St. Peter’s School was thrilled to receive a generous gift of $25,000 for use in the 2017-2018 school year that allowed us to offer enough tuition assistance to make it possible for two students to attend SPS, including one who is a new addition to the School. This gift was special—it was made in partnership with Business Leaders Organized for Catholic Schools (BLOCS), an organization who helps bring these funds to non-Catholic schools as well. BLOCS helped the donor take advantage of the Pennsylvania-based Education Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, where Pennsylvania-based businesses can opt to pay a portion of their business taxes toward a scholarship program at a qualified school of their choosing.
St. Peter’s School is an eligible scholarship organization, which means that we can receive funds from EITC, or its sister program, the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) program. OSTC is a way to contribute scholarship funds to a school of the donor’s choice, but OSTC funds are earmarked for low-income students coming from failing schools. For Pennsylvania business owners, the application process is simple: businesses select a school that they would like to support and fill out a short online application to be considered for the EITC/OSTC programs. SPS is looking forward to finding more ways to use these funds to help bring talented students into our community for years to come. For more information on these programs, be sure to look through the EITC/OSTC page on our website.

Class of 2017 Gift
The Eighth Grade Class Gift is a student run effort, in conjunction with the Advancement Office, to raise funds to benefit future students. The purpose of the Eighth Grade Class Gift is to generate school spirit and pride, and to develop a culture of giving back to St. Peter’s School.
The Class of 2017 donated a new controller to better operate the scoreboard for all future games where it is used. This gift was important to the class due to their mutual love of sports and all the fun they had representing St. Peter’s School on the fields and courts over the years.

Did you know that you can
support St. Peter’s School through
an estate gift or planned giving?
There are many planned giving vehicles that can be used to make a contribution including bequests, trusts, and gifts of property or stock. Planned giving can provide significant resources for St. Peter’s School while also helping you achieve your personal tax and income goals.
You may also be eligible for matching gifts from your employer for gifts made today, even if you are retired from the company. Matching gifts allow you to double or even triple the value of your contribution at no additional cost to you. Contact their human resources division to see if they offer a match for your charitable contributions.
For more information about planned giving, matching gifts, and other gift vehicles, please contact the Office of Advancement at 215.925.3963 x405.
