HANDS OF CHRIST 2020 RECEIPIENTS Our parish’s congratulations to KATIE BENNETT and ERIN HURLEY, who will receive the Diocesan Hands of Christ Recognition at a ceremony to be held on this Tues., Feb. 4th at 7:00 PM in St John of Rochester (8 Wickford Way, Fairport). Be sure to offer your individual congratulations, when you see them in the community. The Hands of Christ is a recognition program in the Diocese of Rochester to assist parishes in affirming our high school seniors who have been the “Hands of Christ” in our church, home, school, and community. The criteria to receive this very special recognition:
• Has consistently demonstrated a Christian attitude by word and example
• Has been actively involved in the parish as well as their school and community
• Has been a positive role model to their peers, younger children, and adults
• Is a practicing Roman Catholic in a parish in the Diocese of Rochester and attends Mass
CREATING A SAFE EVIRONMENT NEWSLETTER The Winter Issue is available. The newsletter aims to help all of us learn more about keeping children and vulnerable adults safe at home, at church and in all places in our community. It includes the following articles: “Child-to-child Abuse is also a concern” and “STEP-UP AND SPEAK OUT: A Parent’s Guide to Selecting Youth Serving Organizations.” Copies of the newsletter are available in the back of each of the churches, on our parish website and on the Diocesan website.
VICTIM ASSISTANCE BROCHURES are also available in the back of each of the churches, on our parish website and on the Diocesan website.
YOUTH MASSES IN OUR PARISH A very special thank you to all of our youth, and their families, who have served in various roles for our monthly Youth Masses at St. Felix and St. Dominic churches. Youth ranging in age from 5 years old to High School graciously serve as greeters, cross bearers, choir members, altar servers, and lectors. We receive many positive comments from parishioners monthly as to what a wonderful job our youth are doing in these roles. We have three more Youth Masses in the near future. At St. Felix the dates are Feb. 16th, March 15th, and April 19th for the 8 am Mass; at St. Dominic’s February 23rd, March 22nd, and April 26th at the Noon mass. Any youth from our parish are welcome to serve at any of the aforementioned dates including youth who are home schooled or attend Catholic School and are not enrolled in our Faith Formation program. Families with preschoolers are welcome to serve as greeters. One-on-one training is provided to youth who wish to serve as lectors. Youth Choir rehearsals are held once a month on the Wednesday (Feb 19th, March 18th, and April 22nd) before the scheduled Youth Mass at St. Dominic from 7 - 7:45 pm. For more information or to volunteer to participate in these enriching events, please contact Sherry Brown, 585-683-2484, Mary Ann Gilman 315-462-9029, or Janet Stoddard, 585-394-8124. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon. Our youth are the future of our Parish!
LADIES AUXILIARY of the K OF C All the women of St. Peter's Parish are invited to join the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus. Your husband does not need to be affiliated with the Knights for you to join us. We meet the 2nd Thursday of each month (September - June) at 7 pm in the Parish Center at St. Dominic's in Shortsville. Dues are $10 per year. Our objective is to inspire a strong enduring bond among members to promote spiritual, charita-ble, and social activities; and be supportive of the church community. One of our goals is to provide scholarships to our youth as well as help them enrich our faith community. Our next meeting is February 13th. Please feel free to attend a couple of meetings to see what we do before joining.

DIOCESAN PUBLIC POLICY NEXT WEEKEND-Feb. 8/9 Catholics Speak Out for the Vulnerable:
Oppose Physician Assisted Suicide in NYS As Christians, we are called to reach out in love & compassion to those experiencing illness and suffering, not to abandon them during their time of need, and to offer our support, mercy and assistance. Those experiencing suffering at the end of life should have full access to palliative care, which eases physical pain while honoring the value and dignity of the patient.
During our upcoming Public Policy Weekend, please plan to sign the Diocese-wide petition to our state elected officials, urging them to oppose physician assisted suicide and support the expansion of palliative care in New York. If you would prefer to sign the petition online, please go to www.dor.org/petition
THE SPECIAL INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS for the month of February:
LISTEN TO THE MIGRANTS' CRIES We pray that the cries of our migrant brothers and sisters,
victims of criminal trafficking, may be heard and considered.
FEBRUARY: MONTH OF THE HOLY FAMILY February is the month dedicated to the Holy Family. Although the start of the Lenten season changes from year to year, a fair-sized portion of February gives us time between the Christmas celebrations and the increased focus on Jesus’s public life and ministry, which occurs in Lent. It is within the Holy Family where Jesus spent the time between his birth and embarking on his public journey. By meditating on the Holy Family, we can learn the meaning of love, obedience, and true fatherhood and motherhood. We are also reminded that the family is the foundational unit of both society and the Church.

Reflection on the Feast of the Presentation
In remembrance of the divine gifts bestowed by the Christmas mystery, the Church gives us a candle. The candle's message is that we always retain Emmanuel, i.e., "God with us." God is with us in three ways. The Church indicates them by handing us a candle and requesting us to hold it before the Mass, and to take it home after the service. Her action shows how we possess Christ (a) in the word of God, principally in the Gospel; (b) in the Eucharist; and (c) in grace. Aren't these wonderful Christmas gifts? a) The word of God. Too many Christians have no true appreciation of God's word. To them it is a source of instruction and edification, of reassurance and admonition; but nothing more. They do not realize the sacramental power inherent in the divine word, or that this power is its highest endowment. In a sacrament God comes and brings grace. By His word God also comes and brings grace. God's word is a seed bursting with life. Still, it is not a magic power. It produces its effect only in hearts with suitable soil. Human cooperation is always needed. b) That the Eucharist brings Christ everyone accepts. What is perhaps not so well understood is how the Eucharist sustains and increases supernatural life in the soul. Christ's flesh is the manna that nourishes us on this earthly journey; it is the seed of glory and the pledge of resurrection. c) The candle we receive today betokens our baptismal candle. The Church presupposes that we will use it, lighting it piously on various occasions. She likewise presupposes that we have not forgotten what she told us at baptism: "Receive this lighted candle, and keep your baptism above reproach. Keep the commandments of God, so that when the Lord comes to His marriage feast you may meet Him in the halls of heaven with all His saints, and may live with Him forever." Yes, the candle received on Candlemas Day ought be a reminder of our baptismal grace, of Christ in us, Emmanuel. On earth there is no way of coming closer to Him. Only in heaven will we be nearer.
