DECEMBER: MONTH OF THE DIVINE INFANCY
The events surrounding Jesus’ birth are found only in Matthew‘s and Luke’s accounts of the Gospel. In John’s account, which was written
later than the others, there is a totally different presentation of Jesus coming into the world, as “the Word became flesh”
(John 1:14).
The other accounts of the Gospel stress the humanity of Jesus, while John’s prologue stresses the divinity. The essence of the prologue that is important to proclaim is that God took on human flesh. God
became incarnate in Jesus.

FROM THE PASTOR
Praised be Jesus Christ!
I am convinced that in God’s Providence, special and unique graces are poured out upon the Church during the seasons of Advent and Lent in ways that do not commonly occur during other times of the Church’s liturgical year.
If this is true, then Advent is the perfect time to invite our Catholic family members, friends, and neighbors back to regular attendance at Sunday Mass, if they have perhaps fallen away from the full practice of the faith.
I recently saw an article in a Catholic newspaper listing a few “common excuses” that are given by those who don’t attend Sunday Mass, and encouraging the faithful to reach out to these individuals.
I’d like to include below that section of the article:
I don’t have to go to the church to pray. Yes, you can pray anywhere. But the Mass is the Church’s greatest prayer.
I am mad at the Church. Unfortunately, many people feel this way especially due to the scandals. The Church is made up of flawed people, but the Church is Christ’s, first and foremost. And Jesus wants you to be a part of his body.
I don’t feel different after Mass. Strive to focus on each part of the Mass: the songs, the prayers, the readings—and, most importantly, the Eucharist. Even if the homily isn’t enlightening or the music is not to your liking, Jesus offers you his Body and Blood.
I’m too busy. Sunday Mass is one hour of your week. It should be the best hour of your week.
I don’t feel worthy. No one is. That’s why we need Mass and confession, where Christ offers himself and his healing to us.
(Source: National Catholic Register, November 25-December 8, 2018, section B1)
Of course, one of the best ways to encourage people to return to Mass is the witness of our own lives. Be sure to make a good confession this Advent season and recommit yourself to Sunday Mass every week, daily prayer, regular spiritual reading, and personal study of the faith.
In the hearts of Jesus and Mary, Father Peter Van Lieshout
