Message from the Head

Dear Parents,

School is now open to Reception, Year 1 and Year 6, plus the key worker children. We have approximately one third of our children in school, (75). With regards to opening more widely for other classes, the school is waiting for further guidance. As soon as we have more information, I will contact all families.

I would like to say a huge “Thank you and well done!” to those of you who are home schooling your children. This has been a long and demanding role, and not always an easy one, and we are grateful for all your efforts.

Our newsletter gives a flavour of recent school life and we look forward to the time when we can all be safely back together.

Reception We are learning about the "Wapping Wildlife" and greatly enjoyed pond dipping. Mrs Hutton and helpers cleared the KS2 pond area and we all loved observing the wildlife and looking for frogs! Thank you to everyone for sharing about what you are doing at home and even sending photos, it is so exciting to keep up with what you are doing. Below you can see Rory’s map he created which is his town called Rorytown and Ismaeel built an awesome mosque at the start of Ramadan. Good job!

Year 1

Learning in Year 1 has been extra fun this term. We have been enjoying the weather and making the most of it by doing lots of learning outside. We collected patterns from our surroundings in the playground using different art materials. There are so many textures all around us! We have looked at the textures and prints on our fingers too and got to do a fun finger painting activity. We have also enjoyed some yoga to wind down at the end of the day. We have started a new English topic called ‘Where the Wild Things Are’.

Chloe has made some fantastic inferences from the front cover of this story. She answered questions about potential characters, settings and the part of the illustration that intrigued her most.

1) I think I will meet a lazy monster that always wants to sleep beside the trees because in the front cover, I see a monster sleeping under a tree.

2) At dead of night, beside a river next to a strange looking forest because in the photo there are some weird palm trees and blue water.

3) The boat is in a river with a boy who is going to a scary forest to explore it.

Year 3 Our first full two weeks back at school from half term have been a quite positive and indeed busy two weeks of engaging as best as we can with our learning. Having said this, we are extremely proud of the way in which all pupils have responded producing some excellent work both online and by the few in class at school. In fact you are producing so much quality work that we are struggling to keep up with it all!! Don’t stop however, but keep up the enthusiasm that all of you are showing. From video performances to amazing fact files and records of home science experiments that you are all doing, the list goes on! The year 3 team are so very proud of our students and how in the face of difficulties you have all worked hard at trying to do your best. Our year 3 Chat Room continues to be littered with polite conversations and ‘Good Morning’s’. Although we can’t see each other it does allow us an excellent opportunity to touch base with each other and is working brilliantly.

Year 2 We’ve been learning about the human body. We've looked at our fingerprints and found our unique patterns. We've learned about what is inside our bodies, what our organs do and we've been thinking about healthy eating. Last week we were thinking about plants. We did a scavenger hunt in the playground, we did some plant-based art and we also took some crayons outside to do some bark rubbings. We had so much fun with this we decided to do rubbings of some of the other textures in our playground! KS2 Monday 8th June was World Ocean Day so everyone in KS2 contributed to a socially distant piece of ocean inspired artwork which gave us back a sense of unity again at St Peter's! Year 6 made the backing and the Year 3, 4, 5 key worker groups made beautiful fish, coral, sea grass and everyone could make a hammerhead shark made out of an empty toilet roll!

In class we were involved in creating an exciting World Ocean Day banner which looks beautiful and was in response to our need to look after our Oceans. We are now working on our display to portray the negative impact of how our human actions affect the ocean and its inhabitants. As we look to the near future we have every confidence that we will all continue to try our best overcoming difficulties and remaining kind, polite and respectful as we all already are.

Year 4

Since the beginning of home schooling year 4 have continued to produce amazing work. As well as their regular maths and english lessons, the children have been super creative producing topic work using resources they already have at home. As part of our Roman topic there has been Roman baking, shield making and Colosseum constructions to name a few. We have celebrated the Queen’s birthday in true style with afternoon tea’s, undertaken home science experiments, supported our NHS and documented our experiences in a lockdown scrapbook. Year 4 has continued to go above and beyond with their independent learning, just look at some of the amazing examples of the work we have produced.

The children have been continuing their learning online! This week they have been studying the famous nonsense poem the Jabberwocky. Children have tried to understand what the strange words in the poem mean. They have learnt that the words are a mixture of two words – known as a Portmanteau.

Here are some of their alternative first verses to the poem -

‘Twas cold and the curious toves

Did search and wonder in the silent rain:

All peculiar was the their ruler,

And the mome raths outgrabe.

- Imaani

‘Twas twilight_and the small_toves

Did turn and jump in the playground:

All silly were the children,

And the mome raths outgrabe.

- Marios

‘Twas twilight and the tiny toves

Did hop and eat in the woods :

All dark were the caves ,

And the mome raths outgrabe.

- Markos

Special shout out to Bhakti (Unicorn Sparkles) who entered the CBBC writing challenge and was selected to have her writing published on the BBC website!

Special Mention – For the whole of Year 5 – families and children alike - for continuing on with their home learning (either through paper work packs or Google Classrooms). I am so proud and grateful keep up the hard work!

Year 6 We participated in a very important workshop called One Planet One Ocean where 1000s of schools and home learners came together to create a Schools Ocean Manifesto to highlight to the government what we can do in schools to help protect the ocean. This day has inspired Year 6 to continue the project and make an image of what the ocean currently looks like with sadly, lots of plastic. We of course, will use recycled materials to create this image. As well as art, we participated in yoga workshops and we were taught how to breathe like a dolphin by a world record holding freediver called Sara Campbell. Now we know how freedivers, big wave surfers & underwater photographers have learned the art of breathing to help them do what they do in the ocean! 45,000 young people participated in this special day and we will continue to make waves until the ocean is better protected for our futures!
