The first week of parish pictorial directory photo shoots will be in September. Times are 2 – 9pm Tuesday – Friday, September 17 - 20 and 10am – 5pm Saturday, September 21. Please start thinking about what times and dates are good for you. Please plan for your photo appointment to last an hour. Sched-uling will be available online or through the Parish Office begin-ning in August. More time slots will be scheduled in October if you cannot make the September dates, but Lifetouch has asked us to fill the September dates first. Plan ahead to be a part of our parish family project!
Flowers need tender loving care, but it seems our flowers have been receiving a little too much loving care. They have been receiving too much water and are drowning. Wedding Information
The first step in planning a wedding at St. Peter is to contact the priest.
You may call to check available dates beforehand, but the wedding can only be scheduled after approval by the priest and at least six months prior to the wedding. Any Catholic being married should be confirmed. A pre-marital assessment (FOCCUS) and a Pre-Cana Class or Engaged Encounter must be taken.
Jefferson City Pre-Cana: Pre-Cana is one component of the marriage preparation option available to couples considering marriage within the Catholic Church. The conference itself consists of presentations by couples and individuals on topics that are of a practical as well as a spiritual nature.

Catholic Engaged Encounter is an in-depth, private, per-sonal, marriage preparation experience within the context of Catholic faith and values. Catholic Engaged Encounter is a weekend retreat away with other engaged couples with plenty of time alone together to dialogue honestly and intensively about their prospective lives together. It consists of a series of presentations beginning Friday evening and ending Sunday afternoon.
The Engaged Encounter coordinators for our diocese are Deacon Burdett & Joyce Wilson.
Remaining 2019 dates are: August 2- 4, & November 1- 3
The registration form, as well as Engaged Encounter weekend information, is available on our diocesan website, www.diojeffcity.org, Our Church, Life & Marriage, Engaged Encounter. The registration form can be found on our site. The cost for the weekend is $100 per couple. A $25 deposit made payable to Engaged Encounter is required and to be included with the registration form. The weekends are held at St. Pius X in Moberly.

From time to time it’s important to review the basics of our Catholic faith, lest they be forgotten or misunderstood. Week by week, our Parish Office receives many requests for letters attesting to the suitability of parishioners to be a Baptismal Sponsor (godparent) or Confirmation sponsor. So, let’s review the role and responsibilities of being a Catholic godparent or sponsor.
To understand the role and purpose of godparents, we first need to remember the purpose and effects of the Sacraments of Bap-tism and Confirmation. In addition to the forgiveness of all sins (Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1263) and bestowing the indelible spiritual mark as one named for Christ (CCC §1272-74), Baptism has two other effects: the person becomes an adopted son or daughter of God (CCC §1265) and the person becomes a member of the Body of Christ, the Church (CCC §1267-71).
The Sacrament of Confirmation increases and deepens the graces first given at Baptism (CCC §1303-04). Consequently, the ef-fects of Confirmation are similar to those of Baptism: the person is conformed more perfectly to Christ as an adopted son or daughter of God, is more perfectly united to the Body of Christ and strengthened to bear witness to the faith in daily life.
Hence, being a godparent or baptismal sponsor is not just an honorary title! The role of being a godparent is directly related to the actual effects of the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. When a person receives the Sacrament of Baptism, God forgives his sins and grants him the gift of salvation. This spiritual relation to Almighty God cannot ever be erased or removed; even if it is denied, forgotten, or damaged because of sin. Baptism is only the beginning of the spiritual life, in which we must grow in virtue and grace before God and man. This growth in virtue and grace reflects the vital reality of our status as God’s adopted children.
A godparent’s role is to assist the growth of the baptized in his or her new spiritual life. During Baptism, both the parents and god-parents make a promise to provide an example of faith to help the baptized to lead a Christian life in harmony with Baptism, and to faithfully fulfill the obligations connected with it (Code of Canon Law 872). If the one to be baptized is an infant or child whose parents are faithful Catholics, the godparent assists the parents, who are the primary teachers of the faith. If the baptized is an infant or child whose parents are not faithful to the life of the Church, or if the baptized is an adult, the godparent must provide a primary role in the spiritual growth of the godchild.
The greatest help a godparent provides is to be a witness of faith, fostering the virtues and providing an example of prayer. As part of this example of faith, the godparent must be involved in the life of his or her godchild. Being actively involved in the life of a god-child fosters a strong relationship and enables the godparent to serve as a true role model of faith. The godchild can then better un-derstand his status as a child of God.
Because this role of sponsor or godparent is so important, there do exist special requirements (Canon 874) in order to be a godpar-ent in the Catholic Church. A godparent must:
1. be properly designated and able to accept the responsibilities of the role 2. be at least 16 years of age (unless another age has been established by the bishop) 3. be a baptized and confirmed Catholic 4. be leading a life in harmony with the Catholic faith and not bound by an ecclesiastic penalties (for example, not having attempted
marriage outside the Church) 5. not be the mother or father of the one baptized
While only one godparent is absolutely necessary, if there are two, one must be a man and the other a woman (Canon 873).
These requirements are meant to ensure that the godparent takes the responsibilities seriously and is able to fulfill them.
Being a godparent is an honor, but also an important duty in the life of the Church. Often, godparents are chosen from family mem-bers and close friends. But sometimes godparents do not live in the same locale as their godchild. While this makes it difficult to be a part of the child’s life, it is not impossible. At the very least, godparents might send a card, a message or make a phone call on their godchild’s Baptism day, Confirmation day, birthday, Christmas, or other significant days in his or her life.
Remembering their Baptism and Confirmation encourages the godchild to call upon the grace received from these Sacraments and live a life worthy of a child of God. Parents should encourage the relationship between their children and their children’s godparents. In this way, the children will not consider Baptism or Confirmation simply a nice thing that happened at some point in their life, but rather they will experience a concrete relationship that bears witness to the fact of their being adopted children of God; and hence encouraged to live their lives in harmony with the greater family of the Church.

May 27th, Memorial Day, a United States federal holiday, com-memorating those who have died in military service to their country is observed annually on the last Monday of May. It was originally known as Decoration Day - an occasion to decorate the graves of the war dead - and was created in the aftermath of the American Civil War. At Masses on this weekend, you will find red poppies in the pews. Why? In 1915, following the Second Battle of Ypres, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a physician with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, wrote the poem, "In Flanders Fields". Its opening lines refer to the fields of poppies that grew among the soldiers' graves in Flanders so in 1918, inspired by the poem, YWCA worker Moina Mi-chael attended a YWCA Overseas War Secretaries' conference wearing a silk poppy pinned to her coat and distributed over two dozen more to others present. In 1920, the National American Legion adopted it as their official symbol of remembrance. Eve-ry week we list in the bulletin those parishioners who are serv-ing in the military. Let us remember to pray for all those who are serving, who have served, and who have died in the de-fense of our country and what it stands for- life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, grounded in God and supported by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. In the days following the Civil War the nation began honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U. S. Military. It was originally known as Deco-ration Day. We now know it as Memorial Day and it became a national holiday in 1971.
