Dear Brothers and Sisters, On this Sunday following the Na-tivity of the Lord we are joyfully celebrating the Holy Family of Nazareth. It is a most suitable con-text because Christmas is the Feast of the family par excellence. This is demonstrated by numerous tradi-tions and social customs, especially the practice of gathering together as

a family for festive meals and for greetings and the ex-change of gifts; and how can the hardship and suffering caused by certain family wounds which on these occasions are amplified go unnoticed? Jesus willed to be born and to grow up in a human family; he had the Virgin Mary as his mother and Joseph who acted as his father; they raised and educated him with immense love. Jesus' family truly deserves the title "Holy", for it was fully engaged in the desire to do the will of God, incarnate in the adorable presence of Jesus. On the one hand, it was a family like all others and as such, it is a model of conjugal love, collaboration, sacrifice and entrustment to divine Prov-idence, hard work and solidarity in short, of all those values that the family safeguards and promotes, making an im-portant contribution to forming the fabric of every society. At the same time, however, the Family of Nazareth was unique, different from all other families because of its singu-lar vocation linked to the mission of the Son of God. With precisely this uniqueness it points out to every family and in the first place to Christian families God's horizon, the sweet and demanding primacy of his will, the prospect of Heaven to which we are all destined. For all this, today we thank God, but also the Virgin Mary and St Joseph, who with much faith and willingness cooperated in the Lord's plan of salvation. The family is certainly a grace of God through which tran-spires what God himself is: Love an entirely free love that sustains boundless fidelity, even in times of difficulty or dejection. These qualities are reflected eminently in the Ho-ly Family in which Jesus came into the world, was raised and was filled with wisdom, with Mary's thoughtful care and St Joseph's faithful custody. Dear families, do not let the love, openness to life and incomparable ties that unite your home weaken. Ask God for this constantly, pray together so that your resolutions may be enlightened by faith and strengthened by divine grace on the path to holiness. Thus, with the joy of sharing all things in love, you will give the world a beautiful witness to how important the family is for the human person and for society. The Pope is beside you, praying to the Lord, especially for those in every family who are most in need of health, work, comfort and company. The fiesta in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe was a big success. We can hope and believe that Our Lady was hap-py with all the love and devotion that was shown to her. We want to thank all the people that worked to help make the fiesta a success. If we forget to mention someone, please forgive us.

We thank especially those who made and drove the floats, the city council who gave us permission to have the pro-cession in the streets of Hawaiian Gardens, the altar boys who led the procession and the volunteers who helped direct traffic. Thank you to the dancers and the choirs that sang and danced at the Masses and to those who pre-pared and sold food, as well as all those who helped clean afterwards.

Above all we thank all those who love Our Lady, “who call to her, seek her, and trust in her intercession.” This love, this devotion directed to her is pleasing to her Son ,Jesus and brings down many graces on our Parish.

Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe The Oblate Priests would like to thank all those who worked so hard to make the Fiesta of Our Lady of Gua-dalupe a success. The nachos & tostilocos made $1,468, the tamales made $3,250, the pozole made $1,224, the tacos made $1,398, the book sale made $261, and the donuts made $170 for the parish. The Total earnings of the Fiesta were $7,771.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas:

En este domingo, que sigue al Naci-miento del Señor, celebramos con ale-gría a la Sagrada Familia de Nazaret. El contexto es el más adecuado, porque la Navidad es por excelencia la fiesta de la familia. Lo demuestran numero-sas tradiciones y costumbres sociales, especialmente la de reunirse todos,

precisamente en familia, para las comidas festivas y para in-tercambiarse felicitaciones y regalos. Y ¡cómo no notar que en estas circunstancias, el malestar y el dolor causados por cier-tas heridas familiares se amplifican!

Jesús quiso nacer y crecer en una familia humana; tuvo a la Virgen María como madre; y san José le hizo de padre. Ellos lo criaron y educaron con inmenso amor. La familia de Jesús merece de verdad el título de "santa", porque su mayor anhelo era cumplir la voluntad de Dios, encarnada en la adorable pre-sencia de Jesús. Por una parte, es una familia como todas las demás y, en cuanto tal, es modelo de amor conyugal, de cola-boración, de sacrificio, de ponerse en manos de la divina Pro-videncia, de laboriosidad y de solidaridad; es decir, de todos los valores que la familia conserva y promueve, contribuyen-do de modo primario a formar el entramado de toda sociedad.

Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, la Familia de Nazaret es úni-ca, diversa de todas las demás, por su singular vocación vin-culada a la misión del Hijo de Dios. Precisamente con esta unicidad señala a toda familia, y en primer lugar a las familias cristianas, el horizonte de Dios, el primado dulce y exigente de su voluntad y la perspectiva del cielo al que estamos desti-nados. Por todo esto hoy damos gracias a Dios, pero también a la Virgen María y a san José, que con tanta fe y disponibilidad cooperaron al plan de salvación del Señor.

La familia es ciertamente una gracia de Dios, que deja traslu-cir lo que él mismo es: Amor. Un amor enteramente gratuito, que sustenta la fidelidad sin límites, aun en los momentos de dificultad o abatimiento. Estas cualidades se encarnan de ma-nera eminente en la Sagrada Familia, en la que Jesús vino al mundo y fue creciendo y llenándose de sabiduría, con los cui-dados primorosos de María y la tutela fiel de san José.

Queridas familias, no dejéis que el amor, la apertura a la vida y los lazos incomparables que unen vuestro hogar se desvir-túen. Pedídselo constantemente al Señor, orad juntos, para que vuestros propósitos sean iluminados por la fe y ensalzados por la gracia divina en el camino hacia la santidad. De este modo, con el gozo de vuestro compartir todo en el amor, daréis al mundo un hermoso testimonio de lo importante que es la fa-milia para el ser humano y la sociedad. El Papa está a vuestro lado, pidiendo especialmente al Señor por quienes en cada familia tienen mayor necesidad de salud, trabajo, consuelo y compañía. Carta de los Sacerdotes Queridos Feligreses,

La fiesta en honor a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe fue un gran éxito. Podemos esperar y creer que la Virgen estaba contenta con todo el amor y la devoción que se le mostró a Ella.

Queremos agradecer a todas las personas que trabajaron para ayudar a que la fiesta fuese una bendición. Si olvida-mos de mencionar a alguien, por favor discúlpenos.

Agradecemos a los que hicieron las carrozas, y el ayunta-miento de la ciudad, que nos dio permiso para la proce-sión. A los monaguillos que participaron y los voluntarios que ayudaron a dirigir el tráfico. Agradecemos a los dan-zantes aztecas y los coros. A todos aquellos que prepara-ron y vendieron alimentos, así como a todos los que des-pués ayudaron a limpiar.

Sobre todo agradecemos a todos los que aman a la Virgen "que le llaman, la buscan, y que confían en su intercesión. " Este amor, esta devoción dirigida a Ella le agrada a Su Hijo Jesús, y derrama muchas gracias sobre la Parroquia.

Wine, cocktails and spiked eggnog may make your holidays festive, but they’re no party for young children. Children often accidentally drink alcohol after holiday parties, by sampling partially empty glasses and what’s left in the punch bowl. Ingesting as little as three ounces of hard liquor potentially can be fatal to a child weighing 25 pounds. Alcohol causes blood sugar levels to drop, which can lead to confu-sion, seizures or even comas. Clear away all glasses and other alcoholic containers immediately as soon as guests leave after your holiday par-ty. Mother of God and Our Mother By Fr. Francis Fernandez Carvajal

Our Blessed Mother is the loving and consoling title we often give to Mary. She is truly our Mother in that she continually gives birth to the supernatural life within us.

She conceived, brought forth and nourished Christ, she presented him to the Father in the temple, shared her Son’s sufferings as he died on the Cross. Thus in a wholly singular way she co-operated by her obedience, faith, hope and burning charity in the work of the Saviour in restoring supernatural life to souls. For this reason she is a mother to us in the order of grace.

This motherhood of Mary will last forever…until the perpetual consummation of all the elect. For, having been assumed into heaven, she has not left behind this salvific mission but, through her constant interces-sion, continues to obtain for us the gifts of eternal salvation. With her motherly love she looks after the brothers of her Son, who are still wayfarers and a prey to danger and uncertainty until they at last reach their heavenly home.

Jesus gave us Mary as our Mother when, after he had been nailed to the cross, he addressed her in these words: ‘Woman, behold your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold your mother.’

Thus in a new way, he bequeathed his own mother to the man: the man to whom he has transmitted the Gospel. He has be-queathed her to all men…From that day onwards the whole Church has her as a Mother. And all men have her as a Moth-er. The words pronounced upon the Cross are understood as being addressed to each one of us.

Jesus looks at us one by one: Behold your mother, he says, John took her into his home, received her lovingly and cared for her with the greatest respect. He brought Mary into his home, into his life. Spiritual writers have seen these words of the Gospel as an invitation to all Christians to bring Mary into their lives. Mary certainly wants us to invoke, to approach her confidently, to appeal to her as our mother, asking her to ‘show that you are our mother’ (Monstra te esse Matrem. Li-turgical hymn Ave maris stella). In giving his mother to our mother Christ gives proof of his love for his own until the end. And, in accepting the Apostle John as her son, the Blessed Vir-gin shows her motherly love for all men.

She has had a decisive influence on our lives. Each of us has his own experience. Looking back we see her intervention be-hind every problem, driving us forward and with the definitive push making us begin anew. Whenever I get down to thinking about the numerous graces I have received from Mary, I feel like one of those Marian Shrines on the walls which, covered with ‘offerings’, there is inscribed only: ‘Through grace re-ceived from Mary’. In this way, it seems that I am written all over: ‘Through grace received from Mary.’

We can ask ourselves on this feast of Our Lady if we have known how to resort to her like St. John, if we have often said to her, Monstra te esse matrem. Show that you are our mother, proving through our deeds that we want ti be good sons to her.

Madre de Dios y Madre Nuestra Por el P. Francisco Fernández Carvajal

«Nuestra Madre Santísima» es un título que da-mos frecuentemente a la Virgen, y que nos es especialmente querido y consolador. Ella es ver-daderamente Madre nuestra, porque nos engendra continuamente a la vida sobrenatural.

«Concibiendo a Cristo, engendrándolo, alimentán-dolo, presentándolo al Padre en el templo, pade-ciendo con su Hijo cuando moría en la cruz, cooperó en forma enteramente impar a la obra del Salvador con la obediencia, la fe, la esperanza y la ardiente caridad, con el fin de restaurar la vida sobrenatural de las almas. Por eso es nuestra Ma-dre en el orden de la gracia».

Esta maternidad de María «perdura sin cesar... hasta la consumación perpetua de todos los elegi-dos. Pues, asunta a los cielos, no ha dejado esta

misión salvadora, sino que con su múltiple intercesión continúa obteniéndonos los dones de la salvación eterna. Con su amor materno se cuida de los hermanos de su Hijo, que todavía pere-grinan y se hallan en peligro y ansiedad hasta que sean condu-cidos a la patria bienaventurada».

Jesús nos dio a María como Madre nuestra en el momento en que, clavado en la cruz, dirige a su Madre estas palabras: Mu-jer, he ahí a tu hijo. Después dice al discípulo: He ahí a tu madre.

«Así, de un modo nuevo, ha legado su propia Madre al hom-bre: al hombre a quien ha transmitido el Evangelio. La ha lega-do a todo hombre... Desde aquel día toda la Iglesia la tiene como Madre. Y todos los hombres la tienen como Madre. En-tienden como dirigidas a cada uno las palabras pronunciadas desde la Cruz».

Jesús nos mira a cada uno: He ahí a tu madre, nos dice. Juan la acogió con cariño y cuidó de Ella con extremada delicadeza, «la introduce en su casa, en su vida. Himno litúrgico Ave maris stella)». Al darnos Cristo a su Madre por Madre nuestra, manifiesta el amor a los suyos hasta el fin. Al aceptar la Virgen al Apóstol Juan como hijo suyo muestra Ella su amor de Madre con todos los hombres.

Ella ha influido de una manera decisiva en nuestra vida. Cada uno tiene su propia experiencia. Mirando hacia atrás vemos su intervención detrás de cada dificultad para sacarnos adelante, el empujón definitivo que nos hizo recomenzar de nuevo. «Cuando me pongo a considerar tantas gracias como he recibi-do de María Santísima, me parece ser como uno de esos san-tuarios marianos en cuyas paredes, recubiertas de exvotos, solo se lee esta inscripción: “Por gracia recibida de María”. Así me parece que estoy yo escrito por todas partes: “Por gracia recibi-da de María”. »Todo buen pensamiento, toda buena voluntad, todo buen sentimiento de mi corazón: “Por gracia de María”».

Podríamos preguntarnos en esta fiesta de Nuestra Señora si la hemos sabido acoger como San Juan, si le decimos muchas veces, Monstra te esse matrem! ¡Muestra que eres Madre!, demostrando con nuestras obras que deseamos ser buenos hijos suyos.
