RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS The Religious Education Program is open from 9:30AM to 2:30PM Monday through Thursday and at night from 6PM to 8:30PM Monday through Wednesday. Please call in advance to make an appointment. There was a second First Communion meeting in Spanish last Tuesday, March 5th. The second First Communion meeting in English is this Tuesday, March 12th at 7PM in the school gym. The Confirmation meetings are set for Monday(s) April 1 and 8th. If you do not attend either one, you will need to call or visit the office for further information. First Penance for the 3rd and 4th graders was this past weekend. The next group will receive the Sacrament of First Penance on Saturday, March 16th. All this information was said at the Communion meetings. Please continue praying for our students.
POPE FRANCIS: LENT The season of Lent is a favorable time to remedy the dissonant chords of our Christian life and to receive the ever new, joyful and hope-filled proclamation of the Lord’s Passover. The Church in her maternal wisdom invites us to pay special attention to anything that could dampen or even corrode our believing heart. We are subject to numerous temptations. Each of us knows the difficulties we have to face. And it is sad to note that, when faced with the ever-varying circumstances of our daily lives, there are voices raised that take advantage of pain and uncertainty; the only thing they aim to do is sow distrust. If the fruit of faith is charity – as Mother Teresa often used to say – then the fruit of distrust is apathy and resignation. Distrust, apathy and resignation: these are demons that deaden and paralyze the soul of a believing people. Lent is the ideal time to unmask these and other temptations, to allow our hearts to beat once more in tune with the vibrant heart of Jesus. The whole of the Lenten season is imbued with this conviction, which we could say is echoed by three words offered to us in order to rekindle the heart of the believer: pause, see and return. Pause a little, leave behind the unrest and commotion that fill the soul with bitter feelings which never get us anywhere. Pause from this compulsion to a fast-paced life that scatters, divides and ultimately destroys time with family, with friends, with children, with grandparents, and time as a gift… time with God. See the gestures that prevent the extinguishing of charity, that keep the flame of faith and hope alive. Look at faces alive with God’s tenderness and goodness working in our midst. Return to the house of your Father. Return without fear to those outstretched, eager arms of your Father, who is rich in mercy (cf. Eph 2:4), who awaits you. Pause, see and return!
RCIA – RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS Please pray for the 27 adults who are preparing to receive Sacraments at the Easter Vigil on April 20th: Two will receive the Sacrament of Baptism; 25 will receive their First Communion and 24 will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
CARDINAL’S APPEAL As we consider our pledge to the 2019 Cardinal’s Appeal, we recognize that all we have is a gift from God. A gift to the Appeal is a sign of our gratitude. Giving to the Appeal supports caring for our retired clergy and religious; educating our future priests; teaching children our faith; supporting parishes that need help with their expenses so they can still preach the Word of God and administer the Sacraments.
PROGRAMA DE EDUCACION RELIGIOSA El programa de educación religiosa está abierto de 9:30am hasta 2:30PM, de lunes a jueves y de noche de 6:00PM hasta las 8:30PM de lunes a miércoles. Por favor llame a la oficina antes de venir para hacer una cita. Hubo una segunda reunión sobre la primera comunión en español el pasado martes, el 5 de marzo. La segunda reunión de la primera comunión en inglés es este martes, 12 marzo a las 7:00pm en el gimnasio de la escuela. Las reuniones de Confirmación son dos lunes, el 1 y el 8 de abril. Si usted no asistí a cualquiera de las dos reuniones, usted necesitará llamar o visitar la oficina para más información. La Primera Penitencia para los alumnos de 3 º y 4 º grado fue este pasado fin de semana. El siguiente grupo recibirán el Sacramento de la Primera Penitencia el sábado, 16 de marzo. Toda esta información se dijo en las reuniones de comunión. Por favor sigan orando por nuestros estudiantes.
PAPA FRANCISCO: LA CUARESMA El tiempo de Cuaresma es tiempo propicio para afinar los acordes disonantes de nuestra vida cristiana y recibir la siempre nueva, alegre y esperanzadora noticia de la Pascua del Señor. La Iglesia en su maternal sabiduría nos propone prestarle especial atención a todo aquello que pueda enfriar y oxidar nuestro corazón creyente. Las tentaciones a las que estamos expuestos son múltiples. Cada uno de nosotros conoce las dificultades que tiene que enfrentar. Y es triste constatar cómo, frente a las vicisitudes cotidianas, se alzan voces que, aprovechándose del dolor y la incertidumbre, lo único que saben es sembrar desconfianza. Y si el fruto de la fe es la caridad —como le gustaba repetir a la Madre Teresa de Calcuta—, el fruto de la desconfianza es la apatía y la resignación. Desconfianza, apatía y resignación: esos demonios que cauterizan y paralizan el alma del pueblo creyente. La Cuaresma es tiempo rico para desenmascarar éstas y otras tentaciones y dejar que nuestro corazón vuelva a latir al palpitar del Corazón de Jesús. Toda esta liturgia está impregnada con ese sentir y podríamos decir que se hace eco en tres palabras que se nos ofrecen para volver a «recalentar el corazón creyente»: Detente, mira y vuelve. Detente un poco de esa agitación, y de correr sin sentido, que llena el alma con la amargura de sentir que nunca se llega a ningún lado. Detente de ese mandamiento de vivir acelerado que dispersa, divide y termina destruyendo el tiempo de la familia, el tiempo de la amistad, el tiempo de los hijos, el tiempo de los abuelos, el tiempo de la gratuidad… el tiempo de Dios. Mira los signos que impiden apagar la caridad, que mantienen viva la llama de la fe y la esperanza. Vuelve a la casa de tu Padre. ¡Vuelve!, sin miedo, a los brazos anhelantes y expectantes de tu Padre rico en misericordia (cf. Ef 2,4) que te espera. ¡Detente, mira y vuelve! RICA - RITO DE INICIACIÓN CRISTIANA PARA ADULTOS
Favor de rezar por los 27 adultos quienes están preparándose para recibir Sacramentos en la Vigilia Pascual el 20º de abril: 2 se están preparando para ser bautizado; 25 recibirán su Primera Comunión y 24 recibirán el sacramento de la confirmación.
CAMPANA DEL CARDENAL Mientras consideramos nuestra promesa a la Campaña del Cardenal de 2019, reconocemos que todo lo que tenemos es un regalo de Dios. Como señal de nuestra gratitud, respondamos con un regalo a la Campaña, la cual apoya el cuidar de nuestro clero y religiosos jubilados; educa a nuestros futuros sacerdotes; enseña a nuestros niños las verdades de nuestra fe; apoya a las parroquias que necesitan ayuda con sus gastos para que puedan seguir predicando la Palabra de Dios y administrando los Sacramentos.
GOOD NEWS REFLECTION: UNION WITH CHRIST
Jesus' life is our life if we're sincere about our faith. We unite ourselves to him by receiving his body and blood in the Eucharist. We meet him in the scriptures and walk with him on the path to heaven. During Lent, the readings that the Church provides for Sunday and daily Mass will help us with this journey if we listen with an ear that recognizes our personal connections to Christ. In this Sunday's Gospel passage, we journey with Jesus into the desert. Consider your own struggles with temptation; reflect on how sin makes your life feel barren and dry like a desert. When we walk with Jesus, we unite ourselves to his struggle with the devil and to his victory over the devil. Our temptations become his temptations, and in our efforts to remain united to him, we reject Satan and choose the life of holiness. The Church helps us do this by giving us ways during Lent to improve our self-discipline and conquer the self-centeredness that makes us vulnerable to sin: fasting and abstinence, alms-giving, reconciliation services, faith formation events, reading materials, and more. Every meal and meat that we give up for Lent, every sin that we confess in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, every sacrifice of time that we make to add more prayer and spiritual reading to our daily life, and every other Lenten activity is a practice of self-denial that unites us to Jesus in the desert. Jesus fasted from food and other physical comforts during his battle with the devil, and this strategy strengthened him and prepared him for the ministry that came afterward. This is what Lent should be for us, too. Satan is not someone to fear. Jesus already defeated all demons on our behalf, first in the desert and then on the cross. Our battle is really only against temptation and our personal weaknesses that make us vulnerable to succumbing to sin. We don't always want to follow Jesus. This is what we must surrender to God during Lent. Then Easter will be far more meaningful, because we will emerge from Lent much stronger in our faith. What are the temptations that are most pressing in your life? Be honest with yourself! How are you succumbing to the devil, even though he really has no power over you? Don't be ashamed. Guilt is not what Jesus wants from you. What he does want is your desire to receive his help in overcoming temptation. He's waiting for you in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. How do you know that the Sacrament of Reconciliation really works? How is it more than just a confession of your sins? CCSR was established by the Catholic parishes of Rockland to provide assistance to those in need. As Lent begins each parish has Lenten mite boxes from CCRS as a fundraising effort to help them in serving those who are poor and needy. The boxes are available in church after Mass. Please take one for your Lenten sacrifices and return it at the end of Lent.
REFLEXIÓN DE LAS BUENAS NUEVAS: UNIÓN CON CRISTO
La vida de Jesús es nuestra vida si somos sinceros en nuestra fe. Nos unimos a Él recibiendo su cuerpo y su sangre en la Eucaristía. Nos reunimos con Él en las escrituras y caminamos con Él en el camino al cielo. Durante la Cuaresma, las lecturas que presenta la Iglesia para el domingo y la Misa diaria, nos ayudarán con este viaje si escuchamos con un oído que reconozca nuestra conexión personal con Cristo. En el pasaje del Evangelio de este domingo, transitamos con Jesús en el desierto. Considera tus propias luchas con la tentación; reflexiona sobre cómo el pecado hace que tu vida parezca estéril y seca como un desierto. Cuando caminamos con Jesús, nos unimos a su lucha y a su victoria ante el diablo. Nuestras tentaciones se convierten en sus tentaciones y, en nuestros esfuerzos por permanecer unidos a Él, rechazamos a Satanás y elegimos la vida de santidad. La Iglesia nos ayuda a hacer esto porque nos da medios, durante la Cuaresma, para mejorar nuestra autodisciplina y conquistar el egocentrismo que nos hace vulnerables al pecado: ayuno y abstinencia, limosna, servicios de reconciliación, eventos de formación de fe, materiales de lectura y más. Cada comida y carne que ofrecemos durante la Cuaresma, cada pecado que confesamos en el Sacramento de la Reconciliación, cada sacrificio de tiempo, que hacemos para añadir más oración y lectura espiritual a nuestra vida diaria y cualquier otra actividad Cuaresmal, es una práctica de la negación de nosotros mismos que nos une a Jesús en el desierto. Jesús hizo ayuno de alimentos y otras comodidades físicas durante su batalla con el diablo, y esta estrategia le fortaleció y le preparó para el ministerio que vino después. Esto es lo que Cuaresma debe ser para nosotros también. Satanás no es alguien a quien temer. Jesús ya derrotó a todos los demonios por nosotros, primero en el desierto y luego en la cruz. Nuestra lucha es sólo contra la tentación y nuestras debilidades personales, que nos hacen vulnerables a sucumbir al pecado. No siempre queremos seguir a Jesús. Esto es lo que debemos someter a Dios durante la Cuaresma. Entonces, la Pascua será mucho más significativa, porque surgiremos de la Cuaresma mucho más fuertes en nuestra fe. ¿Cuáles son las tentaciones más apremiantes en tu vida? ¡Se honesto contigo mismo! ¿Cómo estás sucumbiendo al diablo, aunque él realmente no tiene poder sobre ti? No te avergüences. La culpa no es lo que Jesús quiere de ti. Lo que sí quiere es tu deseo de recibir su ayuda en la superación de la tentación.
