The Most Holy Trinity

PROCESSION AND PERICHORESIS Neither the term nor the concept “Trinity” appears in the New Testament. Our scriptures do name all three persons and describe some sort of unity of relationship among them, but it remained for following centuries to wrestle with this self revelation of God. The term “Trinity” appeared about two hundred years into Christianity’s existence, as it began to gain a hold and there was more time to reflect (and agree or disagree) upon a more precise understanding. One way the church began to understand the relationship of the persons of the Trinity was through the term “procession.” The three persons of the Trinity live in mutual indwelling with each other, and are revealed to people this way. Thus the Son became known through the procession called “filiation” and the Spirit through the procession called “spiration.” Another way the Trinity was understood was through perichoresis (the “chor” of our “choreography” is in there), in which the three eternal persons of the Trinity dance together in their divine and holy unity.

DANCING AND DWELLING So what? It is easy to ask this question about obscure theological debates that took place centuries ago. But these definitions were born of the struggles of the faithful to understand how the Trinity lived and worked in their lives, and the fruit of their efforts can benefit us today. Each of us was baptized in the name of and into the Holy Trinity. At that time, the Trinity came to dwell in us, and we began to dwell in the Trinity. At the beginning of the twentieth century, St. Elizabeth of the Holy Trinity (d. 1906) went even further and prayed for the Trinity to be buried in her, that she might be buried in the Trinity. Our relationship with the Trinity, then, can be as deep and profound as our humanity will allow. And, just as their manifestation or revelation is how we know them, it is when the grace and life of the Trinity are made known through our witness that others see their holiness proceed into the world. It is when we reflect and share the joyous dance of the three persons that their mystery is once again revealed for the life of others. Today’s Readings: Deuteronomy 4:32–34, 39–40; Psalm 33:4–6, 9, 18–20, 22; Romans 8:14–17; Matthew 28:16–20

Outreach Agency Distributions

Because of your continuing generosity for the Outreach committee during the month and the recent 5th Sunday Outreach Collection of 4/29, we were able to send $4,500.00 ($500.00 each) to the following agencies within Contra Costa County: Project Hope Anka Behavioral Health, Putnam Clubhouse, Meals on Wheels/Senior Outreach Services, RotaCare, SHARE, Shelter, Inc., STAND! for Families Free of Violence, Trinity Center and We Care. Thank you again for remembering those whose lives have been impacted in so many ways by being so generous. The next 5th Sunday collection for 2018 will be July 29th. Your ongoing support of these collections is greatly appreciated!

Friendly Manor Lunch – Ongoing On the last Friday of the month, a number of members of the St. Perpetua community have been preparing lunch for the women at A Friendly Manor. A Friendly Manor/Friendly Place is a drop-in center for homeless women open Monday through Friday. It is a place where women can come to shower, do laundry, use the phone, enjoy a cup of coffee and even rest in a safe environment. Breakfast and lunch are served each day. The agency website: stmaryscenter.org/friendly-manor If you are interested in volunteering for about 3 hours, including the necessary carpooling to A Friendly Manor, please contact Karen Rose Kalvass at 925.285.4669 cell.

Mass on the Grass We are happy to announce that we will be celebrating Mass on the Grass due to our construction beginning June 16/17 through mid-August. The Parish Staff and the Liturgy Committee are working to make the liturgical experience both prayerful and enjoyable. Over the past few years, we have had numerous occasions when Mass was celebrated outdoors under St. Perpetua Pavilion on the upper field. We have ample parking on the upper lot and shade. Contra Costa County Fire Department is requiring that we add sprinklers to our church building. This is a fire safety requirement and an important one. The installation of the sprinkler system will require that the church be closed for several weeks during the summer. At this time we will also complete utility trenching throughout the construction area making access to the church impossible. While it will be an inconvenience, summertime is the best possible time for this part of the project to happen. More details to follow.

Catholic Charities Appeal Thank You

Thank you to everyone who contributed to Catholic Charities of the East Bay’s Annual May Appeal. Your generosity helps the Church be one of the largest providers of social services in the East Bay and helps “make all things possible” for children, young people, and families facing crisis or violence. If you would like to volunteer, or simply learn more about Catholic Charities, contact Stephan Pippen, Development Manager at [email protected] or (510) 508-1063.

Featured Quote from Pope Francis “Holiness, then, is not about swooning in mystic rapture. As Saint John Paul II said: ‘If we truly start out anew from the contemplation of Christ, we must learn to see him especially in the faces of those with whom he himself wished to be identified.’ The text of Matthew 25:35-36 is ‘not a simple invitation to charity: it is a page of Christology which sheds a ray of light on the mystery of Christ.’ In this call to recognize him in the poor and the suffering, we see revealed the very heart of Christ, his deepest feelings and choices, which every saint seeks to imitate.” - Pope Francis, Gaudete et Exsultate (no. 95)

Nursery/Child Care During 9:30 Mass

It is not in the nature of toddlers to sit still during Mass. As such, we’d like to offer childcare for youngsters 4 years or younger. We’re currently looking for people who’d like to assist with this program. Time commitment would be about 90 min on Sundays. This is ideal for high school and college students or parents whose children are grown. Please contact Christoph at the Parish Office if interested.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity It’s the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, and once again time to reflect on the Power of Three. I learned recently that the triangle is the most powerful geometric shape in the world. Any added force is evenly spread through all three sides. Bridges and buildings that must carry a lot of weight have structural elements built on triangles. Doesn’t that remind you of the Trinity? The love of the Father, the grace and peace of the Son, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit are all strong in equal measure. Imagine living with only two of those, and not the third. We need every “side” of the Trinity to strengthen us every day. Fiction writers know that the strongest stories involve three main characters to give an uneven, off-kilter tension. Gone with the Wind needs Scarlet, Rhett, and Ashley Wilkes to give it its Greek tragedy contour. What would Harry Potter be without Harry, Hermione, and Ron traveling together through Hogwarts? And then there are music groups. Let’s see. There’s the Andrews Sisters, the Hansons, the Kingston Trio and the Supremes. I’ll bet you can think of many more. (I think we talked about the Three Tenors last year.) The Olympics give medals in gold, silver and bronze. When we think of the future we say we are optimistic, pessimistic, or average. Our pain levels are high, medium, or low. The three primary colors are red, yellow and blue. The most basic harmony in music involves the third note in the scale. The concept of the Holy Trinity speaks to us because it’s in our DNA (another three) here on planet earth, which is, of course, the third rock from the sun.

Congratulations Confirmation Class of 2018

Confirmation Update —Do you like looking at the night stars? Have you ever visited NASA’s website and seen the beautiful images of stars from the Hubble Space telescope? I love looking at the stars and I am particularly fascinated by black holes. A black hole is a region of space where gravity is so strong that nothing, including light, can escape its pull. Could the Holy Trinity be like a black hole? Could God have a gravitational pull? Could God pull us in and send us out as new creations? I think the Triune God does have a gravitational pull. In theological language God’s pull is called communio. Communiois the love relationship between Father, Son, and Spirit. This Trinitarian love relationship draws all creation into its loving embrace. So when we say God is love, we first mean that God the Father, and God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are in a relationship of loving communion. But we also mean that this loving communion is so powerful that it continually pulls or draws us into this love. Just like black holes create new stars, the Trinity’s loving communiobirths missio. God’s very nature is creative. God invites us into loving communion and then sends us forth on a mission to spread this loving communion. Today’s Gospel reading contains God’s mission statement: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations” (v. 19). Disciples have personally experienced being drawn into communiowith God, and they participate in God’s missioto draw others and all creation into this love. Last Saturday we set a whole new set of disciples to go out an preach the Good News. Here is our Confirmation group with Bishop Barber following Confirmation, Saturday, May 19.
