Dear Friends, The ancient Word of God this Sunday from the Hebrew scripture depicts a wrestling match between Moses and God. God’s wrath is blazing over the behavior of the people: The Lord said to Moses, "Go down at once to your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved. They have turned aside from the way I pointed out to them, making for themselves a molten calf and worshiping it. Moses implores God on behalf of the people, begging God to restrain violence against them. Today I believe God is imploring us as a nation to restrain the violence that is so rampant in the United States. In 2017, the most recent year for which complete data is available, 39,773 people died from gun-related injuries in the U.S., according to the CDC. This figure includes gun murders and gun suicides, along with three other, less common types of gun-related deaths. In Canada in 2017 gun homicides were 660. In the same year in Japan there were 22 shooting crimes and 3 deaths from guns. The comparisons should send shock waves through us as citizens. The refusal of our government leaders to take reasonable action to stem gun violence should scandalize us. Yet we feel helpless before this frightening reality. Our parish Social Justice Committee is inviting us to join them in one of the simplest actions we can do as citizens – express our thoughts and values. As a Catholic community we do so under the banner of the Church’s social teaching, which respects the life of every human being as a sacred gift from God, and following the example of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. You are invited to sign a petition to local, state and national leaders, expressing our demands that our government and its leaders take action to bring an end to this cycle of gun violence by whatever means necessary: We, the parishioners of St. Perpetua Parish in Lafayette, California make the following statement. We express our grief most recently with Gilroy, El Paso, Dayton, and Odessa. We express our solidarity with all victims of gun violence. For people of faith every life is sacred. We demand a ban on assault weapons. We require universal background checks. We request funding for research into gun violence as a public health issue. We seek candidates who value life and the common good. We will consistently call for legislation to end gun violence. Thank you for all your effort for this cause now, and in the past. Copies of the petition will be available for you to sign after Mass in the Foyer.

For teens in high school, our day-to-day lives can be busy and hectic, and sometimes overwhelming. Juggling family, school,
sports, community-related organizations (scouts, theater, social clubs), and work can be a huge challenge. Sometimes we just need to slow down and gain some insight about what and who help us grow as a person using our faith as the foundation for the response. Teens have this opportunity during the week at St. Perpetua youth group gatherings, and for those who would like to prepare for Confirmation, we gather on Sunday evenings. In both youth group and Confirmation gatherings all high school youth have the opportunity to work together to understand our faith, to pray, to learn from each other, to meet other teens, and to have fun! Look below for upcoming gatherings for Teens · Sunday, September 15, 11:30 am – Teen / Family Youth Mass. Come join teens in the Parish as we welcome the year. · Sunday, September 15, 6:30 pm Confirmation gathers in the Community Center for an evening of welcome and navigating the year ahead. We conclude at 8:30 pm. · Wednesday, September 18, Youth Group gathers in the Community Center at 7:30 as we kick off our year to Change the World with Everyday Faith! We start with Exploring the Challenge of Trust that looks at Jesus, God’s mercy, and the challenge of living the good and holy life Jesus calls us too. The evening shows teens that even though hard times come along, God always loves us. The difficult times are the times we can most rely on the saving love that God has shown us in Jesus.
