Hymn of Praise: “Crown Him With Many Crowns”

1. Crown Him with many Crowns,The Lamb upon His throne;Hark how the heav’nly anthem drowns All music but its own.Awake, my soul, and sinOf Him who died for theAnd hail Him as thy matchless KingThro’ all eternity.

Verses 2 & 3 Choir

4. Crown Him the Lord of LifeWho triumphed o’er the graveAnd rose victorious in the strifeFor those He came to save. His glories now we singWho died and rose on high,Who died eternal life to bringAnd lives that death may die.

5. Crown Him the Lord of Heaven,Enthroned in worlds above,Crown Him the King to whom is givenThe wondrous name of Love.Crown Him with many crownsAs thrones before Him fall;Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, for He is King of all. Amen.

Old Treatment Lesson . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Kings 8:22-30

22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in thepresence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out hishands toward heaven; 23 and he said: "Lord God of Israel, there is no God in heaven above or on earth below like You,who keep Your covenant and mercy with Your servants whowalk before You with all their hearts. 24 You have kept whatYou promised Your servant David my father; You have bothspoken with Your mouth and fulfilled it with Your hand, as itis this day. 25 Therefore, Lord God of Israel, now keep whatYou promised Your servant David my father, saying, 'Youshall not fail to have a man sit before Me on the throne ofIsrael, only if your sons take heed to their way, that they walkbefore Me as you have walked before Me.' 26 And now Ipray, O God of Israel, let Your word come true, which Youhave spoken to Your servant David my father. 27 But willGod indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and theheaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less thistemple which I have built! 28 Yet regard the prayer of Yourservant and his supplication, O Lord my God, and listen to thecry and the prayer which Your servant is praying before Youtoday: 29 that Your eyes may be open toward this templenight and day, toward the place of which You said, 'My nameshall be there,' that You may hear the prayer which Yourservant makes toward this place. 30 And may You hear thesupplication of Your servant and of Your people Israel, whenthey pray toward this place. Hear in heaven Your dwellingplace; and when You hear, forgive.

Epistle Lesson . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Revelation 21:1-5

1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the firstheaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was nomore sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a brideadorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice fromheaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men,and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people.God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And Godwill wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be nomore death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no morepain, for the former things have passed away." 5 Then Hewho sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new."And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true andfaithful."

P: This is the Word of Lord C: Thanks be to God.

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 19th

Chapter. C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

1 Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2 Nowbehold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chieftax collector, and he was rich. 3 And he sought to see whoJesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was ofshort stature. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed up into asycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way.

5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and sawhim, and said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and comedown, for today I must stay at your house." 6 So he madehaste and came down, and received Him joyfully. 7 But whenthey saw it, they all complained, saying, "He has gone to be aguest with a man who is a sinner." 8 Then Zacchaeus stoodand said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods tothe poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by falseaccusation, I restore fourfold." 9 And Jesus said to him,"Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is ason of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek andto save that which was lost."

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

“We Have Become One” A Nigerian friend of mine who lived in Houston,

Pastor Charles Wokoma, seemed to be related to half thepeople in Nigeria. Although he now lives back in Nigeria, when a Nigerian came to Houston, he went to the airport topick up his "cousin." He went to the airport so often that hemust have had thousands of cousins. Blood ties are extremelyimportant to him, as they are to most people. "Blood is thickerthan water." Earthly relations seem to overcome many otherrelations, that is, we prefer our own kin to anyone else. That'shardly surprising. It is a "dog bites man" story.

In a case where we prefer those who are not related tous over those who are, then we have a "man bites dog" story. This is unusual in human affairs. But this is exactly whathappens in the life of the church, in which those who share inthe name Christian are as closely tied together as humans canbe. Christ Himself is the connection. He ties together with Hisblood those who are in the church, and therefore have beencleansed by that precious blood. At the altar we partake of theblood of Christ together so that we cannot be anymore moreclosely united. I certainly feel closely connected to thecommunity of Christians that I am privileged to serve as apastor. In many ways, though I love my blood relations, thepeople of my parish are my family. God often overturns ourhuman expectations in which we would exhibit a preferencefor those of our earthly family.

John Chrysostom is right to point out that in the lastanalysis we are all relatives through the line of Adam. Ibaptized an infant named Eve Noelle some years ago. When Iasked if she were named for anyone in her family her fatherindicated that she was not. In response I said that she bears

the name of the mother of us all and that upon being baptizedshe was placed into a better relationship with our heavenlyFather than her primeval namesake, because she was placedinto the life and death of the promised Seed, Christ our Lord. And that changes everything. She gained lots of relatives thatway. She is now a sister of Christ Himself and all the rest ofthe people in His blood-bought community.

One of the joys of serving a vibrant urban church is theremarkable diversity of church members our church serves.Africans, East Indians, Asians, Americans, Hispanics, andeven a Canadian (a pastor) all serve and work together in onecommunity under one Christ, through one baptism. When Isuggested to Tanzanian members of our church that we couldstart a Bible study group for them, they chided me saying,"We are members of Memorial Lutheran Church. We willcome to the events held for the members of MemorialLutheran Church." This was music to my ears. Theyunderstood very well that our status as Christian folksupersedes any other issue of human ancestry. In Christ wehave all become one (Gal 3:28).

Prayer:Lord Jesus Christ, bind all hearts together through the bloodof the covenant. Keep us united in the truth which you havegranted to the church through Your Word. Amen.
