Almighty God, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us faith to perceive his glory, that being strengthened by his grace we may be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING Daniel 7: 9-10, 13-14 9 As I, Daniel, watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne, his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. 10 A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. 13 As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. 14To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

PSALM 67

At 8.00am and 9.00am the reader and congregation say alternate verses 1 Let God be gracious to us and bless us:

and make his face shine upon us, 2 That your ways may be known on earth:

your liberating power among all nations. 3 Let the peoples praise you, O God:

let all the peoples praise you. 4 Let the nations be glad and sing:

for you judge the peoples with integrity, and govern the nations upon earth.

5 Let the peoples praise you, O God: let all the peoples praise you.

6 Then the earth will yield its fruitfulness: and God, our God, will bless us.

7 God shall bless us: and all the ends of the earth will fear him.

SECOND READING 2 Peter 1:16-19

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” 18 We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING St Mark 9:2-10 Alleluia! Alleluia! O send out your light and your truth, and let them lead me: let them guide me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. Alleluia!

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 2Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5Then Peter said to Jesus, ‘Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ 6He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!’ 8Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.9As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead could mean.

For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sung by the Choir. Words on page 2 of this booklet.

FIRST READING 1 Kings 19.1-16

9Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ‘So may the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.’ 3Then he was afraid; he got up and fled for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah; he left his servant there.

4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: ‘It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.’ 5Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, ‘Get up and eat.’ 6He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7The angel of the LORD came a second time, touched him, and said, ‘Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.’ 8He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food for forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. 9At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there.

Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ 10He answered, ‘I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.’

11 He said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.’ Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; 12and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.13When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ 14He answered, ‘I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.’ 15Then the LORD said to him, ‘Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. 16Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place.

SECOND READING John 12.20-33

20 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ 22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour.

27 ‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—“Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour.28Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him.’30Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine.31Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ 33He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

COLLECT FOR THE TRANSFIGURATION

Heavenly Father, whose Son Jesus Christ was wonderfully transfigured before chosen witnesses upon the holy mountain, and spoke of the exodus he would accomplish at Jerusalem: grant us strength so to hear his voice and bear our cross that in the world to come we may behold him as he is; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen

HELP US APPOINT A NEW FULL-TIME CLERGY COLLEAGUE The Cathedral is hoping to appoint a third senior full-time cleric to coordinate

teaching programs and Christian education programs for members of our Cathedral community, as well as develop, train and encourage congregational lay leadership

to extend and grow our ministry at the heart of Melbourne. Chapter’s Finance Committee has identified that we would need to raise an additional $50,000 each year for the next five years to make this appointment. We would be delighted if

members were willing to pledge support for this important new role through increased giving. We will collect pledges until All Saints’ Sunday (4 Nov), and will keep a monthly tally on pledges received to keep you updated. Thank you for your

generous support.

HYMN 1: IMMORTAL, INVISIBLE GOD ONLY WISE

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above, thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on a tree, and wither and perish: but naught changeth thee. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; of all thy rich graces, this grace, Lord, impart – take the veil from our faces, the veil from our heart. All laud we would render, O help us to see, ’tis only the splendour of light hideth thee; and so let thy glory, Almighty, impart through Christ in the story, thy Christ to the heart.

HYMN 2: BROKEN FOR ME

Broken for me … Come to my table and with me dine; eat of my break and drink of my wine. Broken for me … This is my body given for you; eat it remembering I died for you. Broken for me … This is my blood I shed for you, for your forgiveness, making you new.

HYMN 3: GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT REDEEMER

2

Open now the crystal fountain whence the living waters flow; let the fiery, cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through: strong deliverer, strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield, be thou still my strength and shield.

3

When I tread the verge of Jordan bid my anxious fears subside; death of death, and hell’s destruction, land me safe on Canaan’s side: songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee, I will ever give to thee.

William Williams (1717-91) Together in Song 569

HYMN 4: WE KNOW GOD’S LOVE

2

Love climbs the heights of joy and grace and gifts us with each sunlit day; the beauty of each sacred space brings blessings we may trace: God's love embraces all!

4

Love sounds the depths of grief and pain and gathers all who weep and mourn; this loving presence will remain and life anew sustain: God's love embraces all!

Page 11: St Paul’s Cathedral · and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and

3

Love spans the breadth of faith and fear where questions dance with mystery, as wisdom holds us ever near and sings in accents clear: God's love embraces all!

5

Love permeates this holy ground and lights a fire of awe within; love speaks in stillness and in sound and shares this truth profound: God's love embraces all!

HYMN 5: DEAR LORD AND FATHER OF MANKIND

2

In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word rise up and follow thee, rise up and follow thee.

4

Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace, the beauty of thy peace.

3

O sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity, interpreted by love, interpreted by love!

5

Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm, O still small voice of calm.

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-92)
