Morning Women’s Fellowship to Start!

Come to our 2016 Spring Session! It begins this Wednesday, January 20th at 9:30 a.m.

At this meeting, we will be playing a game. Please bring a used Christmas decora-tion you would like to give away: a decora-tion that you may have enjoyed for years and are tired of seeing. Please wrap it in Christmas paper and we will use it for some fun.

To start the “Year of Mercy”, we will first be studying, Mercy, A Bible Study for Catholics, by Mitch Pacwa. The second part of the session we will be studying the next Symbolon Series: Living Your Faith. This Series, accessed on-line, explains the essentials of the Catholic Faith in a way that will inform our minds and inspire our hearts. Total cost for both studies is $17.00.

Morning Women’s Fellowship meets from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday morning, in Maher Hall.

Come to grow in your faith, share your life, make friends and pray together! Look forward to seeing you! Questions? Call Beth Beckman at 597-7531.

Angel Tree Thanks You! A big THANK YOU to the amazing team of volunteers, the numerous teens that assisted us and all the generous donors that made this Christmas so special for so many children. We were able to provide gifts for 300 of our youngest brothers and sisters in need this year! One 14-year-old boy wrote a thank you note saying, “If it weren’t for St. Paul’s, I would have no gifts under my tree.” This heartfelt letter goes out to every one of you that generously gave of your time, talents and treasures to bring such joy to these children. Truly, it was a beautiful way to share God’s love in this Jubilee Year of Mercy.

On behalf of all the Angel Tree Team, we thank you sincerely and we pray that your 2016 will be filled with joy and blessings!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Although our tradition carries a long memory of marriage as a sacrament, it may surprise you to learn that for nearly eleven centuries, there was no single wedding ceremony approved for use in the Church. While we have evidence of priests blessing marriages as early as the second cen-tury, in the early period church leaders relied on civil authorities to manage marriage for every-one in society. In most cases, society yielded its authority to sanction marriage to the male heads of households. From ancient times, marriage had been a family affair, managed by the father of the family, who acted as priest and guardian of family tradition. Each head wanted to keep the family gods alive, and so he would arrange for brides for his sons, paying a “bride price” as compensation for the loss of a skilled household worker. As creepy as that sounds, it was a step up from the kidnap-ping practice of earlier years. Even after the kid-napping raids stopped, the customs remained. Every wedding contained the ritualized kidnap-ping of the bride, the husband abducting his bride from the festivities, carrying her over the threshold to prevent her father’s gods from following her into her new religion. There, he fed her a piece of “sacred cake,” initiating her into a new way of life. It’s fascinating to see how customs endure, long after we have completely rejected the values and attitudes they originally expressed!

Healing Broken Hearts-One Weekend at a Time

Pope Francis has designated this year as the Holy Year of Mercy and to, “Be merciful as your Father is merciful,” as Jesus told his disciples in Luke 6:36.

This year 2016 is an opportunity for spiritual conversion, recognizing how much God loves and cares for us. It is also a time to be merciful towards ourselves, reorienting our hearts to God so that we can be our best selves as we move forward in life. If you have emotional or spiritual wounds as a result of a past abortion, consider attending our upcoming Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreat February 5th through February 7th These retreats are therapy of the soul, with Christ as our loving physician. It is an opportunity for women and men to experience the graces of this merciful, holy year and renew and rebuild hearts broken by abortion and life’s circum-stances. Participation is strictly confidential.

SURPRISES

Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God’s surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory.

Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus.

We may think that the point of today’s familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody’s life—not necessarily our own—will be surprised for the better.
