Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 1:1-18.

Evangelio según San Juan 1,1-18.

I n the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God.

All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be

through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race;

the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

A man named John was sent from God.

He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.

He was not the light, but came to testify to the light.

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him.

He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.

But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his

name,

who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man's decision but of God.

And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Fa-

ther's only Son, full of grace and truth.

John testified to him and cried out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he exist-

ed before me.'"

From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace,

because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father's side, has revealed him.

And Jesus advanced (in) wisdom and age and favor before God and man.

A l principio existía la Palabra, y la Palabra estaba junto a Dios, y la Palabra era Dios.

Al principio estaba junto a Dios.

Todas las cosas fueron hechas por medio de la Palabra y sin ella no se hizo nada de todo lo que existe.

En ella estaba la vida, y la vida era la luz de los hombres.

La luz brilla en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no la percibieron.

Apareció un hombre enviado por Dios, que se llamaba Juan.

Vino como testigo, para dar testimonio de la luz, para que todos creyeran por medio de él.

El no era la luz, sino el testigo de la luz.

La Palabra era la luz verdadera que, al venir a este mundo, ilumina a todo hombre.

Ella estaba en el mundo, y el mundo fue hecho por medio de ella, y el mundo no la conoció.

Vino a los suyos, y los suyos no la recibieron.

Pero a todos los que la recibieron, a los que creen en su Nombre, les dio el poder de llegar a ser hijos

de Dios.

Ellos no nacieron de la sangre, ni por obra de la carne, ni de la voluntad del hombre, sino que fueron

engendrados por Dios.

Y la Palabra se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros. Y nosotros hemos visto su gloria, la gloria que rec-

ibe del Padre como Hijo único, lleno de gracia y de verdad.

Juan da testimonio de él, al declarar: "Este es aquel del que yo dije: El que viene después de mí me ha precedido, porque existía antes

que yo".

De su plenitud, todos nosotros hemos participado y hemos recibido gracia sobre gracia:

porque la Ley fue dada por medio de Moisés, pero la gracia y la verdad nos han llegado por Jesucristo.

Nadie ha visto jamás a Dios; el que lo ha revelado es el Hijo único, que está en el seno del Padre.

Pope Francis says that watching how children interact and play can teach us a lot about the relationship we should have with Jesus. The Pope said this today during the general audience in the Vatican, which he dedicated to a reflection on the Christ Child. Noting that many saints have shown us a great devotion to the Infant Jesus, particularly St. Therese of Lisieux, the Pontiff said from Him, we see the hu-mility of God. “He, the great, is humble and is made a child. This is a real mystery! God is humble. This is beautiful,” Francis said. The Pope went on to discuss the little that is recorded in the Gospels of the infancy and childhood of Jesus, but said that “we can learn a lot from Him if we look at the lives of children. It is a good habit that parents and grandparents have, to look at chil-dren, what they do.” The Holy Father went on to consider

two characteristics of childhood that are enlightening for our relationship with Jesus. The first characteristic the Pope men-tioned is their desire for attention. “They must be the focus, why? Be-cause they are proud? No! Because they need to feel protected," he said. "And it is necessary for us to put Jesus at the center of our lives and to know, even if it could seem paradoxical, that we have a responsibility to protect Him. He wishes to be in our arms, wishes to be cared for and to be able to fix His gaze on us.” The Pope added that we can make Ba-by Jesus smile “by demonstrating to him our love and joy because He is in our midst.” Abandoning our logic Next, Francis noted, children love to play. But to play with a child, he said, "means abandoning our logic to enter theirs."

If we want a child to have fun, the Holy Father observed, we have to figure out what pleases them, rather than selfishly making them do what we want. This, he said, is a lesson for us: “Before Jesus, we are called to give up our pre-tense of autonomy - and this is the core of the problem: our pretense of autonomy - to welcome instead the true form of freedom, which consists in knowing who we have in front of us and serving Him. He, this child, is the Son of God who comes to save us. He came among us to show us the face of the Father, which is rich in love and mercy.” “Hold, then, the Child Jesus in our arms, putting ourselves at His service: He is the source of love and serenity,” the Pope recommended, encouraging the faithful to go to the nativity scenes in our homes and kiss the Child, telling him, "Jesus, I want to be humble like you, humble like God.”

El papa Francisco realizó este miér-coles su última audiencia del año en la plaza de San Pedro. A su entrada, en el jeep descubierto, pasó recorriendo los pasillos de la plaza en medio de los fieles que le saludaban calurosamente, contrastando la fría mañana de invi-erno europeo. El sucesor de Pedro se detuvo varias veces para saludar y bendecir a niños y enfermos. Abrigado con un sobretodo blanco y bufanda del mismo color, dio inicio a su catequesis en este Año de la Miser-icordia. En el resumen que el Santo Padre leyó en español dijo que "en estos días de Navidad, contemplamos al Niño Jesús, reviviendo en nuestros corazones el misterio de la Encarnación con gestos sencillos y tradicionales, como poner el pesebre en nuestras casas".

"Esta devoción al Niño Jesús --añadió el Santo Padre-- nos permite meditar, siguiendo el ejemplo de la Virgen Ma-ría, la humildad de Dios, que se hace pequeño por nosotros. A pesar de que sabemos poco de la infancia de Jesús, podemos aprender mucho de Él miran-do a los niños". "Jesús también quiere --concluyó el Papa-- que lo estrechemos en nues-tros brazos, que le demostremos nues-tro amor, nuestro interés. Que aban-donemos nuestra pretensión de au-tonomía y acojamos la verdadera for-ma de la libertad, que consiste en reconocer y servir a quien tenemos delante. Él ha venido a revelarnos el rostro del Padre, rico en misericordia". A continuación saludó los peregrinos de lengua española, "en particular a los grupos provenientes de España y Latinoamérica". En la plaza se levantó

una ovación y el Papa añadión: "Veo que hay muchos mexicanos por allì. Acojamos al Señor en nuestros cora-zones, demostrémosle nuestro amor y el gozo de saber que Él siempre está en medio de nosotros. Muchas gra-cias". El Papa invitó a rezar también por las víctimas de los desastres naturales que golpearon durante estos días en Estados Unidos, Inglaterra y América del Sur, causando víctimas, daños y desplazados. "El Señor de consuelo a aquellas poblaciones y la solidaridad fraterna les auxilie en sus nece-sidades". La audiencia concluyó con el canto del Padre Nuestro en latín, y la bendición, particularmente para los niños y duran-te la cual los fieles exponen los objetos de devoción para que sean bende-cidos por el Papa.
