In the ancient world, “household” was a wide-reaching concept. When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his live-stock and other possessions would be consecrated to service of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and wouldn’t think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the “households” of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we encounter many “strangers” every day in stores or traffic who sud-denly are “next door” to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than person-al gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a “household” that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God

This is the height of vacation season, but as anyone who has ever been to Rome in the summer knows, no time to visit there! The city is sweltering, and in a pre-air-conditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the pope clears out. His destination is usually Castel-gandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal posses-sion since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were finally lost, the papal dwelling was given “extraterritorial rights,” meaning that it is an exten-sion of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. The Vati-can observatory maintained telescopes here for dec-ades, far from the glare of the city lights of Rome, but although the observatory offices remain here year round, the telescopes are in Arizona. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predecessors, though he still slows down the pace of his work in Rome. Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The pope needs a break, and so do you. Vacation comes from a word meaning to empty oneself. There’s still time to clear the calendar for at least one golden summer day even if you don’t have a personal castle in the hills! .

First Reading — The L , our God, protected us along our entire journey (Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b). Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading — Christ nourishes and cherishes the church because we are members of his body (Ephesians 5:21-32 [5:2a, 25-32]). Gospel — We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God (John 6:60-69).

ACKNOWLEDGING OUR MISTAKES

The Social Justice Ministry is once again collecting water for the homeless. It is greatly appreciated by those living on the streets as we get into our very hot summer months. You can leave your donations at the church when you come to Mass. Thank you!

Novena for the Legal Protection of Human Life: This nine week effort will include prayer and fasting for the intention that the change in the membership of the U.S. Supreme Court will move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed to life. The Novena will also include materials to help educate the public. It takes place from Friday, August 3 to Sep-tember 28. Individuals are urged to ign up for the Nove-na as part of the USCCB Call to Prayer at www.usccb.org/pray.

St Paul Parishioners and guests, just a friendly word of caution. In the next 30-45 days there will be construction work of the interior and exterior of our church and parish hall and parking lights. We are retrofitting/upgrading the lighting into more energy efficient fixtures. There should be no interruption or interference with our weekday and weekend Masses. The work will be done during the weekdays between the hours of 9am-5pm. St Paul’s is given this blessed opportunity to save on our monthly expenses and have an impact to our car-bon footprint on the environment. The reduction to our monthly electrical bill will greatly help our already tight budget for this year and years to come. The SMUD Complete Energy Solutions Program offers us this opportunity to upgrade our lighting fixtures. It will help save an estimate of $663 per month on our electri-cal bill, saving 5,393.50 kWh per month or $39,804 in 5 years-saving 323,610 kWh in 5 years. St Paul’s impact to our carbon footprint to the environ-ment is:

Remove 6.47 passenger vehicles from the road, Save 64,721.95 kWh which reduces our CO2 emis-

sions, and Sequester the equivalent of 95.14 acres of forest.

The overall Installation cost is $18,230.49 but with the 49% rebate offered through the program, our net pro-ject cost will be $9,363.58, the ROI or project will pay for itself in 1.18 years. We apologize in advance if there are any inconven-ience the construction work may cause. For any questions or concerns call Dale Yamamoto at 916-257-3323 Finance Council

We need to acknowledge that we make mistakes. At every Mass we have the opportunity to review the past week. We admit that we have sinned in thought, in word and in deed, in what we have done and what we have failed to do. We seek forgiveness, and we ar as-sured that God still loves us, before we receive Com-munion.

The min-istry is reaching out to parish members to join with this ministry and help provide the desserts and salads need-ed for these receptions. Volunteering to help requires providing a dessert, or salad to feed approximately 5 people Members are normally only solicited to provide food once a month.
