Dear Parents,
In the past two weeks we have conducted our emergency evacuation and lock down procedures at
St Patrick’s. These drills are important to ensure that all members of our community can be safe should
there be a need for evacuation or lock down. Whilst I report the students were excellent during these
drills, it is important for parents to understand the procedures.
The purpose of the evacuation drill to evacuate all people on site to the nominated assembly area, which
is our cricket pitch out on the oval. Students, staff and volunteers are to move together quickly and safely
to the assembly point and when there, are to listen to staff members calling the roll to ensure everyone is
accounted for.
For parents and volunteers on site during this time it is important that you listen to staff members for
instructions. It is also important that all parents and volunteers register at the front office when they are
on the school grounds. By doing this we have a record of you being at school and therefore know to
account for you should there be an evacuation.
Whilst the evacuation procedure is quite simple, the lock down procedure can be more difficult due to
the varying reasons for a lock down. A school may go into lock down should there be a dangerous
animal or intruder, a hazardous substance or situation on the school grounds. Once a lock down is
needed an alert siren will be activated and all students, staff, parents, and volunteers must enter into the
nearest building or room, and lock the door and windows. If is also advised to close blinds if possible.
During a lock down students are required to sit quietly and still until the lock down has been cancelled.
A lock down only ceases when the principal or staff member in charge speaks to all people in person.
When a lock down is in place, most people in the community are not sure as to why it has been put in
place. For this reason, once in lock down, no one will be allowed to enter rooms, as the person who
could be knocking at the door could well be the person causing the danger. This is important for parents
to understand, as in some cases when a school is lock down the media or social media may report the
danger at school. A parent’s natural reaction may be to come up to the school to remove their children.
In this case walking into the school grounds puts the parent in danger and the parent will not be allowed
to enter into any building or classroom. For all staff know, this well intentioned parent could be the
reason for the lock down.
It is important to understand our evacuation and lock down procedures are for your child’s safety.
We practise to ensure all members of our community are aware of what to do in case of emergency.
While we may hope never to use them in the case of an emergency, it is important that we are well
prepared and ready should we need to.
If you would like to know more or have any questions please feel free to make an appointment to speak
to me.
Enjoy the Holidays,
Matt

APRE REFLECTIONS AND REVELATIONS
Dear Parents,
Another great term comes to an end this Friday. We have been blessed to have had many wonderful
opportunities for learning and give thanks for what has been achieved throughout the term.
School/Class Masses
Thank you to all who have joined us for our School and class masses. We have loved having you there
to share these times with us. Thank you to the children who have so reverently participated and have
been so enthusiastic with their responses and singing. A special thank you to the teachers who put
time and effort into preparing the masses and of course, to Fr Nigel for celebrating our masses with
us. LG4 did a fantastic job with their Mass on Saints last week. I especially enjoyed hearing how the
saints have had an influence on their lives.
This Friday LG1 are going to have their very first Liturgy, which will be held in the Prep classroom.
It’s focus is about thanking God for our five senses. As this is their first Liturgy we welcome the
parents/grandparents of the prep children only, to join them at 8:45am Friday morning. Thank you to
Mrs Vine and Mrs Piper for preparing the children. I look forward to celebrating this Liturgy with the
Prep children.
Term 3
Next term in Week 3, we celebrate Catholic Education Week. This is a special
week celebrated at each school in the Brisbane Archdiocese acknowledging
what it is that makes a Catholic school different from other schools. There will
be more of what will be happening in this week, next term. Watch this space!
Have a wonderful break and treasure the time spent with your family.

I was reading an article in the Courier Mail on Sunday 7 June, page 21, titled ‘Small screen, giant
scream’. With the increasing amount of children suffering from anxiety, I thought it was timely to
discuss some strategies parents can use to reduce both fear and anxiety, starting with what children see
on television. It can often be hard to recognise if a child is scared because fear can be exhibited in a
number of ways. Child psychologist Dr Glenn Cupit said children’s response to fear can be very subtle
and “they can just go silent”.
The article written by Sue Dunlevy and Ruth McCosker, discussed some of the problems associated
with exposing children to scary television and films. The main points are summarised below:
· Research has found children now report higher levels of anxiety than 1950s psychiatric
patients, partly due to exposure to scary or threatening TV.
· Scary television is causing sleep disturbance, fear and anxiety in young children, particularly
those under 10 years of age.
· “Exposure to just one scary trailer can make a sensitive child fearful of going to bed on their
own” – Australian Council on Children and Media
· Films and television can look so realistic that children have trouble distinguishing between
fiction and reality.
· British research found that the overall effect of scary TV on internalising symptoms was
“comparable to the impact violent TV has on externalising behaviours (like aggression and anti
-social behaviour)”.
· Dementors in Harry Potter movies, the ice creature in Frozen and the film Maleficent, and
other shows where there is a lurking menace that you can’t see watching you, may not be
violent, but they can still be scary.
Here are some strategies you can use to help your children:
· Sit with your children while they watch TV
· Defuse your child’s fear by commenting on the terrific make-up used so kids realise the
wounds or the monsters aren’t real
· Ensure children sit through to the end of the movie so they can see the hero triumph over evil

L G2 Staff, students and parents, have been assisting Mrs Gerrard to raise money to buy school
supplies and some clothes, to take over to a struggling school in Vanuatu. Mrs Gerrard will canoe to a
village in North Efate and deliver the items to the village people. She will take photos to show the
people receiving the much needed items. A big thank you from Mrs Gerrard for all your help.
L G4 have been investigating Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Peoples’ experiences of democracy and citizenship.
The children will watch ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ to consolidate
their learning and will write a letter advocating for the
Stolen Generations to have contact with their families again.
L G3 In religion we have learnt about the Fruits
of the Spirit and have made cute little baskets
where we wrote about different ways we can live out
the fruits of the spirit in our lives.
