Spring Term
March 2019 Parents’
Association News
Well done and thank you to
the PA on both a very
successful Valentine’s coffee
morning and a super fun
table quiz. Both were well
attended and over €5000
was raised for school funds.
This money goes to make up
the shortfall in department
funding, it supplements
special programmes in the
school such as Music
Generation and CREATE and
where possible it covers the
cost of refurbishment in the
classrooms.
The photographer will be
coming to school on
Wednesday 10th April. This
year the photographer will
take pictures for all classes.
Further information will
follow shortly from the PA.
Please remind your children
that hairbrushes must not be
shared on the day!!
Encouraging Independence
As the year progresses and your child becomes more and more familiar with the
school routine we would ask that you encourage independence and responsibility
amongst your children by allowing them to enter the classrooms/hand up home-
work/hang up coats and put lunch boxes away on their own. By all means bring
them as far as the door, but ask yourself “Is it really necessary for me to go in?” The
teachers are there to supervise and hear reading etc; in the mornings from 8:30am
onwards. They do not have time to engage with you, except for small messages. If
you wish to discuss something with any of the teachers please arrange an
appointment with them either with the teacher directly or through the office so that
the appropriate time can be given to the discussion. Let’s encourage responsibility
with the older classes too by encouraging the children to remember to bring in all
the things they need for the school day.
St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations!
Mid- term seems to be a distant memory and Easter will soon be upon us.
We hope you all enjoyed the short break over the St. Patrick’s bank
holiday weekend. A special thank you must go out to Mr. Howard who,
along with some children, attended and walked in the St. Patrick ’s Day
parade in Greystones. All the local schools partook by either creating their
own float or by coming together to represent “Saints and Scholars”. We
were delighted that St. Mochéróg was able to join St. Kevin, St. Laurence,
St. Brigid and St. Patrick and hope that our willing participants will
increase next year. We finished off our “Cóicís Na Gaelige” with a
fantastic whole school assembly for which the children prepared songs
and poems. The highlight of this assembly was the fantastic dancing by
Thomas Taylor-Nolan. Maith Thú Thomas!
Easter Closing: School finishes for the Easter Break on Friday April 12th. Junior and
Senior Infants, their siblings and bus children leave at 11:55 am. All other children at
12:10 pm. Please clear the car park promptly.
Through your generosity, the
school has supported the
following charities since
September:
Yei Project: €355.00
Focus Ireland: €378.55
SVDP: Giving Tree and
collection: € 378.00
Christmas .65

Delgany National School Newsletter
This year our Active School Week will take place from May 7th-10th. This is a change from previous years as standardised testing must take place in May and has grown substantially in recent years. DORM: Delgany Obstacle Relay Marathon will take place during this week, and this is a chance for the children to raise funds for their school by gathering sponsors and partaking. Parent volunteers will be needed on the day – Further details will follow closer to the time. This is also a good time to gently remind you that Sports Day has moved and will now take place in the GAA grounds on June 12th or 13th depending on the weather. Children from third class up partook in the 3km run in Avondale competing with a large number of primary schools from Wicklow. Congratulations to Jessica Barrie in Third class who came third overall. This is a fantastic achievement. Unfortunately, the girl’s hockey team were knocked out of the league following 5-1 defeat by Whitechurch NS. The boys also lost to Rathgar N.S. but everyone agrees that they are getting better all the time. Football is also going from strength to strength.
Well done to Ms. Prole who has
organised both the Book Fair, World
Book Day and visits from three
authors/poets for the children.
Junior infants-1st class loved their
music, drama and dance workshop
with Gillian Perdue. Gillian is the
author of both children’s and adult’ s
fiction and would be well known in
schools for her books, Conor’s
Cowboy Suit, Conor’s Canvas and
Conor’s Concert. Other book week
activities included a reading/
discussion and chat with Olive
Mooney, the author of The
Chronicles of Cadaver College-The
Curse of Halbezia. This was attended
by third-sixth class who asked
searching and relevant questions.
The Poet David Lordan completed
workshops with the children from
2nd-6th and as I write this, the
children are enjoying the Book Fair.
Fifth class have been thoroughly enjoying cycle training. These activities fit in well with our
Active School programme and we hope that the number of children cycling to school will
increase now that they have more cycling confidence. It is fantastic to see so many children
cycling, walking and scooting to school on Wednesdays and we hope they keep it up!
Both 5th and 6th Class have loved tag rugby.
Third class had a very informative chat about fire safety from our local firemen.
Fifth class will join with all the other fifth class children in the area for the annual Ecumenical
Lenten Service in St. Patrick’s church.
We were delighted that the “No bucks bus” came to visit and that everyone in school got to
visit it and to learn a little more about the Tiglin Charity from Rodney Evans.
Ms. Sweeney and Ms. Kerr have been very pro-active with our green school programme. The focus, of which is Travel and Global Citizenship. As a green school we are always trying to cut back on all sorts of things paper, card, etc;
At the moment we would ask you to….
keep up the fantastic WOW, COW and SOW days – maybe as the weather gets
better you could consider WOWing, COWing, SOWing everyday? We are extremely
grateful to the Glenview Leisure centre which is giving away free family passes to
those who get their WOW cards stamped.
Return straws or give up using them altogether. 9,000,000,000,000, are used daily across the globe with over 90% of them ending up in our oceans.
Consider a reusable water bottle that can be filled from the tap.
Does you sandwich need to be wrapped in plastic/cling film?
Our local Junior Tidy Towns committee are looking for volunteers from each of the local schools - both adults and children-to come along with their children on Beach Clean. You are being asked to sign with others from our school to collect litter from both the North and South Beaches in Greystones. Further information is available from [email protected] We would be delighted if you and your children could help out with this project and it would certainly enhance our Green School credentials and our community participation. Greystones Tidy Towns will provide bags, litter pickers and gloves and will collect the litter afterwards.
Senior infants and third class have taken
to growing, planting and all things
gardening. They are hoping to do well in
the Incredible Edibles project and will
soon be attacking the flowerbeds out
the back. This is a good opportunity to
thank Tanya McGuinness and her team
of gardeners for all the work they do in
encouraging gardening with the
children. I’m sure Tanya would welcome
more helpers and if this is something
you feel you would like to do please let
us know.
We are delighted to have Kate O’Kelly a
local ceramicist/sculptor working with
children in first class. They are working on
a project that is integrated with their
nature and science programme. So far
they have made pinch pots and coil pots
that look like little beehives. We are all
looking forward to their finished project.
You can check out Kate’s work here

sponsored by the Blackrock Education
Centre.
