Dear Friends in Christ,
Developing Holy Habits
This weekend we are in week two of our four part homily series on the Mass. We’re looking at the Introductory Rite and the Liturgy of the Word. In this bulletin piece, I’d like to share a few thoughts on Mass etiquette. I think we have very reverent liturgies at St. Pat’s, but we could use some improvement just like any other parish community. Your priests are learning and growing too! Here are some suggestions: Come early to Mass and spend some time in quiet prayer preparing your mind and heart to receive Christ in his Word and through the Eucharist. It’s a good thing to come 5-10 (or more!) minutes early and read through the readings in the missalette, or just spend some quiet time with the Lord. There are some afternoons and mornings that we have a firm resolve to get to Mass early but life happens. The important thing is that we make it a holy habit to come early. I think that brings great delight to the heart of God because he always wants to bless our lives with his presence.
Do your best to dress appropriately for Holy Mass. Americans are getting more and more casual and we certainly see that at Mass. It’s important that we realize we are in God’s house and not at the beach or at the park. It’s not necessary to dress formally like we’re going to a wedding, but nice clothing can communicate respect to God and help us to realize we are at a very important gathering.
We should always be a “child friendly” parish. It’s great to see children at Mass! For those of us who are a little older, let’s remember that we were little one’s at one time. If you find your child is getting real loud, its fine to make your way to the back until your child quiets down, and then come back into church. At both church’s we have children’s worship aides for ages 3-12 that will help them connect with the readings at Mass.
Let’s all participate at Mass. Singing the songs, praying the people’s parts of the Mass, and partici-pating with a lively spirit will make our liturgies more vibrant and alive. Even if the quality of your singing voice is less than stellar, remember that St. Augustine said that “to sing is to pray twice!”
Please stay for the whole Mass. There may be times when someone has an urgent need to leave Mass after Communion. If you don’t have an urgent need, please stay for the whole liturgy. The proper place to go after receiving the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist is back to our pew, and then to kneel down and thank him for all the blessings he generously bestows upon us. We don’t want to miss that final blessing either!
Next weekend we’ll be exploring the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Eucharist is what makes us distinctively Catholic, and brings us all the way back to the Last Supper, when Jesus gave us the gift of himself. There are many symbols and rituals that comprise this part of the Mass, so we’ll be giving an explanation of these sacred elements. Have a great week!
In Christ,
Msgr. Steve

The Parables of Jesus On Saturday, August 15
9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in Dempsey Hall Presented by John McGrath
Jesus was a master storyteller and used these brief but fascinating stories as his preferred method of teaching the truths of the Kingdom of God and a disciple’s response to it.
The Parable of the Prodigal Son to teach us about God’s forgiveness…
The Parable of the Good Samaritan to teach us who our neighbor is…
The Parable of the Talents to teach us how to use our talents and spiritual gifts in the world…
The Parable of the Sower and the Seed to teach us how to receive God’s grace and bear good fruit…
The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant to teach us about the imperative to forgive others…
The Parable to the Tax Collector and the Pharisee to teach us about the importance of humility before God…
The Parable of the Ten Virgins to teach us about the importance of being ready to meet God when our time comes…
Come spend a few hours listening to Jesus
teach us how to live as he would want us to.
John McGrath is Director of the Department of Educational Services for Diocese of Rockford, working in
the area of Faith Formation and Evangelization. He oversees the Ministry Formation Program and the
Diocesan Theological Institute which provide ongoing education for parish pastoral ministers and permanent
deacons. He is married to Cindy, his wife of 42 years, and is the proud father of 3 adult children and one grandson.
Interested in Becoming Catholic?
Have you ever thought about joining the Catholic Church?
Are you a baptized Catholic who has never celebrated First Communion or Confirmation?
Is your spouse or fiancé Catholic and perhaps you would like to share in his or her faith?
Are you unbaptized but feel a call from God to draw closer to him and the Church?
Were you raised in a Protestant tradition but now feel drawn toward Catholicism?
If so, we’d invite you to consider entering into the RCIA process (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) which begins in September.
