BACKGROUND ON NEXT WEEK’S READINGS

MAY 11TH/12TH FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

First Reading: Acts 13: 14, 43-52 None of the readings at liturgy during the seven-week Easter Season are from the Old Testament. In its place, we read from the Acts of the Apostles to show how the Easter message spread far and wide to all parts of the Mediterranean world. Today, Paul and Barnabas are preaching in what is now central Turkey.

Second Reading: Revelation 7: 9, 14-17 The book of Revelation was not intended to predict actual people and events in future times. The author was concerned only about people and events in his own time and was given no privileged information about the future. In next week’s passage, the author encourages people of that time by presenting a vision of God’s people enjoying heavenly life.

Casting our nets?

In the first reading we hear how Peter and the apostles told the Sanhedrin that “We must obey God rather than men.” Then in the Gospel we hear that Jesus appeared to the disciples after they had fished all night without any success. Jesus told them to “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” Despite being tired, the disciples obeyed and they caught 153 large fish! We have so many reasons that we can give for not wanting to obey God and “cast our nets” by sharing the Gospel message with others through our example and our actions. Here are just a few: we are tired; we would rather stay in our comfort zone; we are afraid because we think we don’t know our faith well enough; or we would rather do what we want. This week we can spend some time pondering these questions: Do I obey God when I hear Him speaking to me in my heart? Do I cast my nets through my example and actions? Do I cave into the pressures of our current culture or to my own desires?

SANDWICHES FOR

KAREN HOUSE The Karen House Shelter can always use more sandwiches to feed the constant stream of people who knock at their door asking for food. If you can help, take a loaf of bread and put lunchmeat (cheese optional) between two slices of bread (NO CONDIMENTS). Put the sandwiches into plastic sandwich bags, then back into the bread wrapper. Take the sandwiches to the FREEZERS IN THE GARAGE NEAR THE RECTORY. Come to the Rectory for the garage door entry code. God bless you for your generosity!

Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.

- Proverbs 22:9

St. Norbert You Are The Best! THANK YOU!!!

We really do appreciate your faithful support of the Respect Life Plant Sale. You are there for us each and every year, come rain or shine (which rarely happens). God Bless you and your friends for partnering with us to help agencies like Our Lady’s Inn and the ThriVe to share the truth of life and the love of Jesus Christ with families in need.

CALLING ALL SCHOOL PARENTS! The parish picnic is coming up on May 10th and 11th. School parents are responsible for staffing the game booths at the picnic. We have several shifts available. If you have any questions, please contact Jenn Pontus at: [email protected]

St. Norbert Game Tents The Annual Catholic Appeal

Do you love me? “Do you love me?” These are the words of Jesus to Peter after the resurrection. Over and over again, Jesus persists, “Do you love me?” Exasperated, Peter says, “Lord you know everything; you know that I love you!” Jesus knew Peter believed, but he also knew how fragile his faith was. Jesus doesn’t demand an expression of faith, but encourages us to be confident when we say I Believe.

The Annual Catholic Appeal asks the question, “Will you give?” In some ways it is the same question as “Do you love me?” or even “Do you believe?” It is really one question, not three, to which the Christian is invited to respond. I Believe in short, means I love and I will give.

Help Needed We are in urgent need of two dependable men who will help for one hour, every 4th Monday night, to deliver left-over bread from St. Louis Bread Co. (Panera) on Lindbergh to Marygrove Children’s Home in Florissant. St. Norbert men and women have volunteered for many years to fulfill this rewarding mission If you are able and interested, please call Bill O’Brien at (314) 831-4233. Thank You.

CONGRATULATIONS to our parishioners, Vance and Linda Arnold

on their 45th Wedding Anniversary!

Our list of names of the sick has been added to our book, “Prayers for Healing” that is located on a podium in the Gathering Area of Church. Anyone may write the names of those who need our prayers in this book.

You may continue to call the Rectory to have your loved ones names placed in the bulletin in order for the entire parish to know that prayers are needed. After a few weeks we will ensure that their name is recorded in the book in church if you have not already done so.

St. Norbert, pray for us.

When you purchase a gift card, of any denomination, and donate it to the St. Vincent de Paul Golf Tournament, you can enter your name in the monthly drawing not once, not twice, but THREE times! That increases your chance of winning $100 of TWB gift cards this month.

Our St. Vincent de Paul organization works so hard to help so many in our own community. Let's really show them our support, and at the same time raise money for our church and school.

We currently have a few $25 Red Robin gift cards in stock. Red Robin gives us 8% of our gift card purchase.

If you have any questions, please contact Marie Ponciroli at [email protected].

Room At The Inn April Update

We were blessed to celebrate Easter with 9 friends from Room at the Inn. We served parents with 3 month old twins, a Mom with a 3 year old son and 3 single ladies. Vince & Linda Miller prepared a fantastic Easter feast that was enjoyed by all.

Thanks to all of our volunteers that baked our wonderful desserts. We took advantage of the beautiful weather to take 3 year old Nolan outside to blow bubbles and burn off some energy. All of our volunteers enjoyed cuddling the twins. I'm sure the parents were grateful for a short respite from childcare.

A special thank you to all who gave up time with their families on Easter to serve the homeless. May God continue to bless you and your families!

School News GIFT CARD DONATIONS NEEDED!

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul-North District, which includes our St. Norbert Conference, is having it’s annual Golf Tournament in June to raise funds, at which there will be theme baskets to be raffled. The theme of our basket is “Treasure Chests of Gift Cards” and so we’re asking for your support as we gather gift cards of all kinds…. restaurants, retail stores, entertainment, etc…. to display in our basket. They can be any denomination and since we’d like to support our parish’s Together We’re Better (TWB) Program we ask that you kindly purchase gift cards from them. They have generously offered to double your chance of winning a $100 gift card that is awarded every month if you make a purchase in support of St. Vincent de Paul between now and June 9th. Please mention, when you place your order, that you’re donating your card (s) to St. Vincent de Paul’s golf tournament. As always, we are humbled by the generous spirit of this parish in supporting the vital work of this ministry and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
