I am delighted to share with you this latest version of the Choirs Newsletter. I believe it is an excellent way for all those involved or interested in Music at St Nicholas Cathedral to be informed of what is going on, and to communicate more consistently with the outside world, promoting all the various achievements and events that have happened and are to come.

We have had a busy time since our last newsletter in the Spring of 2012 and so this edition is full of news spanning a wide expanse of time. You will know how much ‘bricks and mortar’ work has already been achieved including the new lighting system but there remains much to come.

I am thrilled that the Choirs Association has begun a new lease of life and many thanks to the new committee for working so hard to revise the constitution and to put in place a new structure even better equipped to support the work of the choirs. It is a vital way of keeping choristers, their parents, lay clerks and cathedral members in touch, and an essential means, both of fund-raising for those choir events that fall outside the normal remit of cathedral work (and even some that fall within) and of flying the flag that is cathedral music. With an officer assigned to recruitment, both of choristers and lay clerks/choral scholars, the new Choirs Association feels very much like help.

It was a real delight and privilege to be welcomed in August 2012 by the Pilgrims’ School, the choir school for Winchester Cathedral where we spent a very happy week singing daily evensong and visiting both the cathedral and the town. The school and cathedral were most hospitable and we enjoyed tours both of the cathedral and also of the historic town, as well as being treated to a barbecue in the cathedral grounds. I was pleased that we were also able to travel to nearby Portsmouth Cathedral where I had been assistant organist ,though the freezing and wet weather forced us into a café on the sea-front to warm up.

The Winchester tour was our debut with James Norrey as incoming Assistant Director of Music. Educated at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, he comes to us with an impressive list of cathedrals already under his belt: Chelmsford, Canterbury and Llandaff, and immediately ‘wowed’ us with his technical wizardry on the organ. He has also proved a reliable colleague and inspirational choral director and a master at typesetting service sheets and posters etc.

The autumn term 2012 was slightly more chaotic than usual as the new lighting system was being put in. When the disruption finally got too much for us, we drew stumps for the weekday evensongs and used the time to advantage with extra rehearsal time. This really paid off when it came to the first major use of the new lighting for the Advent Carol Service at which the full effect and flexibility of the system were demonstrated. The lights were finally blessed in a delightful service in February when again the wide range of lighting effects were explored.

recruitment campaigns. This put an additional strain on both the girls’ choir who had to double the number of Sunday services they were singing and the lay clerks who had to learn a whole new repertoire of Lower Voice music to sing without a top line. Despite an already long list of previous commitments they rose to the challenge and delivered a demanding programme including extras such as singing at Alnwick Castle, Lindisfarne Priory and a performance of St Nicolas in Britten’s centenary year. Thank you to them all.

The autumn term began with strict intentions to be more reasonable in the quantity of outside engagements though from the outset there have still been a number of additional outings including a choral evensong in Ford to celebrate the Battle of Flodden, and singing at a Harvest Supper in St Gabriel’s Heaton where our Dean’s wife is now curate.

We have enjoyed a number of combined events with Hexham Abbey both in sporting events (football or bowls) and combined evensongs. This is a most welcome partnership and has brought an extra dimension to both our choirs’ experience. The two of us have also teamed up with Carlisle Cathedral to take part in the newly created Hadrian Choirs Festival which will rotate between the three venues. This year we celebrated Britten and Purcell in Carlisle for an enjoyable afternoon concert in October.

As part of our recruitment drive for boys, and in addition to initiatives with other schools, we are collaborating with Newcastle School for Boys with a Choral Scholarship scheme initially in 2014 for boys in years 3, 5 and 7 but with an intention to extend this to the whole range of years 3-8 in 2015. This is very exciting, and in addition to the provision of a cathedral bus service to transport choristers from several schools to the cathedral, is one of a number of initiatives we are introducing with a view to improving chorister recruitment.

Before concluding I should also like to welcome our new singing coach who gives singing lessons to all choristers, lay clerks and choral scholars. The importance of this role cannot be underestimated as the quality of the vocal delivery of all our singers is the foundation on which everything else we do is built. I am delighted with the results that Rebecca Coulson is already bringing to bear and look forward to a continuing development in the resulting quality of the choirs.

All that remains is for me to wish you season’s greetings. I hope you all have a marvellous Christmas and I hope that the next edition of this newsletter will follow in due course packed full of yet more successes. Thank you all for your support.

The Spring term was marked by an increasing awareness that the boys’ choir was at risk from breaking voices and a shortage of fresh blood and it was regretfully decided to drastically reduce the number of services they were singing and to instead focus on rehearsal and the continual

2013 has seen a busy year across the country celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Britten and St Nicholas Cathedral has been no exception. The Choirs began this academic year learning lots of new notes for The Hadrian Three Choirs Festival which took place at Carlisle Cathedral. Our Choirs learnt Britten’s Te Deum in C and A Hymn to the Virgin, and the Girl Choristers also learnt Missa Brevis and A Ceremony of Carols. In celebration of Britten the Girls and Lay Clerks also learnt his Festival Cantata Rejoice in the Lamb which they performed at Evensong on All Saints’ Sunday.

Britten and Tavener

These specially learnt works will remain in the Cathedral’s repertoire and the Girls will be performing Missa Brevis on Sunday 2nd March 2014 and A Hymn to the Virgin on 30th March in celebration of Mothering Sunday. The Girls will also be singing Britten’s A New Year Carol on Monday 13th January.

This year has seen the beginning of another anniversary – 2113 will be the 100th anniversary of the death of John Tavener. A great composer and also a deeply religious man, his faith became an increasingly important part of his life and composition and he once described music as “the essence of God”. John Rutter said: “He could bring an audience to a deep silence which is a very rare gift”.

The popularity of his works was highlighted in 1997 when his piece A Song for Athene was performed at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. Sir John’s other well-known works included his setting of William Blake’s poem The Lamb, which was chosen to see in the new century at the end of 1999 in the Millennium Dome, London. In tribute the Choirs will be performing this work at A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve and again on 19th January. The Choirs, with Durham Cathedral Choir performed his Apolytikion of Our Holy Father Nicholas of Myra at the Patronal Festival on Saturday 7th December. The Choir also performed his Ikon of St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne as part of the Holy Island Pilgrimage 2013. His compositions will remain in the repertoire in Cathedrals around the country and it is with great sadness that his musical offerings have come to an end.

Old Choristers Association Following on from the tremendously successful launch of the Newcastle St. Nicholas Cathedral Old Choristers Association at the reunion in June, we are looking to formalise the association. At the reunion we were pleased to welcome back a selection of old choristers encompassing the 1940’s to 2011! All thoroughly enjoyed singing the service together with the current choir which included Stanford in C and Ireland’s Greater Love.We are keen to get in contact with any old choristers, lay clerks, choral scholars, organists or precentors who may have lost touch with St. Nicholas Cathedral over the years. If you know someone who may have lost contact with us, please do encourage them to get in touch and share their memories.

Further information will be sent out in the near future, including what the aims of the association will be, how to become a member and proposed events over the coming year. If you have any queries please contact Hannah Davidson.

If you have any pictures or memories of your time with the Choirs of St Nicholas Cathedral please send them to Hannah Davidson, Cathedral House, 42-44 Mosley Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1DF.m u s i c @ s t n i c h o l a s c a t h e d r a l . c o . u k

New Appointment of Rebecca CoulsonRebecca Coulson has now taken up the post of visiting singing teacher for the boys’ and girls’ choirs, lay clerks, and choral scholars. Rebecca is a North East-based freelance musician, who read music at Cambridge as a choral scholar. As well as regular soprano solo engagements, she runs a busy singing and music theory private teaching practice, and teaches singing for St Chad’s College, Durham University. She is musical director of Tynemouth Choral Society, and founder and co-director of the Caritas Ensemble, a professional chamber group, which raises funds and awareness for charitable causes. We welcome her into the St. Nicholas Cathedral Choir community, and look forward to watching the choristers progress with her guidance

Newcastle Cathedral Choirs AssociationNew Committee Members

“I am delighted that the Choirs Association is finding a new lease of life. I am very grateful for the hard work and enthusiasm of the newly formed committee”

Michael Stoddart, Chair of the Newcastle Cathedral Choirs Association.Marion Peutherer, Vice-Chair “I’ve been involved with the Choirs since June 2012 when Rachel and William joined Lanterns, before progressing into the Girls’ and Boys’ choir respectively in 2013. I’ve spent the past year helping Michael to recruit choristers and to re-energise the Choirs Association. When I’m not in and around the cathedral, I spend my time working as an HR manager for Procter & Gamble and indulging my love of playing the organ and singing in a chamber choir.”

Susan Carver, Secretary “I’ve been involved with the Choirs since April 2009 when Mark, my son, joined the Boys’ Choir just at the Easter service. Mark has progressed through all the levels of the choir and is now head of the Boys’ Choir. I’ve always been interested in the fund raising element of the Choirs and am now very happy to be appointed Treasurer of the Association. In my other job, I work for Procter & Gamble in their finance department as I have for the last 29 years.”

Andrea Hewitson, Treasurer “I have been involved with the choir since January this year. My daughter Dominique decided she would like to sing in the Cathedral Choir after seeing a leaflet at school and as they say the rest is history. This activity is the one Dominique enjoys the most and loves the friendships she has built up not only with the girls but the wider choir. In my spare time I am a family law solicitor and have been for too many years to mention. As a result of my job I have a good secretary who has assisted me since being appointed as Secretary of the Association.”

David Molyneux, Social Secretary “I’ve been a member of the Cathedral Choir since 2005 when I first came to Newcastle for University. I began as a Tenor Choral Scholar and attained the position of Tenor Lay Clerk upon completion of my undergraduate degree. Nowadays, work commitments are such that I am unable to commit to singing as a full time lay clerk; however, I still sing as often as possible as a deputy lay clerk. My role on the CCA committee involves generating ideas for, and helping to organise, social events to be held throughout the year to help raise funds for, and the profile of, the cathedral choirs. Outside of the cathedral, I work as a drug development chemist at Aesica Pharmaceuticals.”

Cathedral DevelopmentThe Vision for Phase Two

On Thursday 28th November theGirls’ Choir, Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars opened the public consultation for Phase Two of the Cathedral’s Development Plan. John Sadler, the newly appointed project co-ordinator explained that “this was our first public consultation and the atmosphere set by the choir was perfect”. The Choir sang Bruckner’s ‘Locus Iste’, ‘Hail Gladdening Light’ by Wood and Viadana’s ‘Magnifica’, a beautifully calming programme praised by many in the audience after the presentation.

The public consultation was a key point in the progression of Phase Two and was incredibly successful. The public were asked to put forward their views, suggestions and thoughts of the planned works in Phase Two and how the new space may be used in the future.

The planned works include the removal of the pews, cleaning and relocating the ledger stones to reflect their historic location within the Cathedral, the installation of under-floor heating and new flexible seating. Additional plans are also in place to transform both St Margaret’s Chapel and the South Courtyard.

The Dean explained that the “new flexible seating will transform the nave and create an extraordinary space for worship as well as performance, exhibitions and conferences.” Remodelling the nave space will certainly provide wonderful new opportunities for the choir itself including space for larger musical performances and scope for varied performance layouts.

Further information can be found in the flyer included with this newsletter. Please contact John Sadler on [email protected] if you would like to discuss the plans.

Newcastle School for BoysChorister Scholarships

St Nicholas Cathedral is delighted to announce that we are joining forces with Newcastle School for Boys, Gosforth, to launch its first ever choral scholarship! The scholarship will be open to boys entering years 3 to 8 and could result in a discount of up to 50% on the cost of the fees at the school, the only independent all-boys school in Newcastle. Under the terms of the scholarship they would sing with the NSB choir and join as a Chorister here at St Nicholas Cathedral. The scholarship will run for the first time in the academic year of 2013/14 and we look forward to welcoming the new recruits from NSB as a result.

David Tickner, Headmaster of NSB, said: “We are delighted to form a partnership with the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas and to be able to offer talented boys access to an excellent education at NSB and first class singing and musical training.”

The Very Revd Christopher Dalliston, Dean of St Nicholas Cathedral, added: “I warmly welcome this initiative from Newcastle School for Boys, which is one of a number of developing relationships with schools and colleges around the city. The Cathedral’s choral tradition is a priceless treasure in its own right and, for those like the boys and girls in our choirs, a gift that can last a lifetime.”

The first assessments for the choral scholarship will take place in January for boys hoping to enter NSB in Years 3, 5 or 7 in September 2014. To qualify, candidates will have to meet the school’s academic requirements and will also be asked to perform a short singing audition.

For further information about NSB and the Choral Scholarship, please call 0191 255 9300 or visit the website: www.newcastleschool.co.uk

Review of Choir EventsChoir Tour to WinchesterIn Summer 2012 the Girls, Boys and Lay Clerks went on tour to the beautiful town of Winchester where they sang five services. The tour was a fantastic experience for all, and gave the choir a chance to sing in an incredible space as well as develop friendships . The choir also sang in Portsmouth Cathedral and still found the time to fit in extra trips around the city in the wet and windy weather!

Songs of Praise Service, St Andrew’s HaymarketOn 7th October 2012, the Girls Choir and Lay Clerks took part in a beautiful service at St Andrew’s, Haymarket. This was well attended by parishioners and guests of St Andrew’s Church, Haymarket as part of their Harvest Celebrations in 2012. The format was much the same as the BBC programme of the same name and the Girls and Lay Clerks also sang a number of items on their own.

Border Cathedrals Festival13th October 2012 marked a sad day as it was the last of a long series (going back over 50 years) of annual concerts and services held jointly between the choirs of St Mary’s Edinburgh with Carlisle and Newcastle Cathedrals. The final concert involved a variety of music, including a performance with all three choirs of the Fauré Requiem. We are sorry to see it go but we look forward instead to the newly formed Hadrian Choirs Festival which had its inaugural concert in October 2013 with the Choirs of Carlisle and Newcastle Cathedrals with Hexham Abbey.

Concourse Concerts at The Sage GatesheadIn December 2012 the girls and lay clerks performed a couple of concerts in the concourse of The Sage Gateshead. This is a great opportunity to showcase the choir in front of the discerning concert-going public and both performances were highly acclaimed not least by the Director of the Sage himself!

Page 11: St Nicholas Cathedral Choir News · Hymn to the Virgin on 30th March in celebration of Mothering Sunday. The Girls will also be singing Britten’s A New Year Carol on Monday 13th

Singing in Alnwick GardensYet again the choir sang for the Duchess of Northumberland for the annual Cherry Blossom Ceremony at which people from all around the world assemble to commemorate loved ones, represented by the trees. A mixture of sacred and secular, reflective and more up beat music, this event is always well received.

Brass and Choir Workshop and ConcertIn April 2013 we hosted a brass workshop for the Newcastle Music Service and the boys and lay clerks joined participants for a concert of music for brass, choir and organ. It is good to develop relations with the local music service, and we enjoyed singing pieces specially written by their director Steve Halsey.

Choral evensong at St Michael’s, FordWe had a lovely day out to Ford on 28th September 2013 to celebrate the Battle of Flodden with an evensong attended by a good number of local people. It is always good when we can give the opportunity to those who live a long way from the Cathedral to hear the Cathedral choir, but also for us to visit such a beautiful part of Northumberland.

Organ Recital for Children in NeedIt was fantastic to welcome organist Christopher Nixon on 25th October 2013 during his whistle-stop tour of the UK playing the organ in over 50 cathedrals across the country. He was raising money for BBCs Children in Need and his 9 am recital here was followed by another at 11am in Durham and later that day in Ripon. Christopher on average fitted in four or five Cathedrals every day for 10 days!

Please continue to support the Choirs of St Nicholas Cathedral whenever you are able to. A full listing of upcoming events can be found on our website: www.stnicholascathedralmusic.co.uk

The Hadrian Choir FestivalThe Hadrian Choir Festival, involving St. Nicholas Cathedral, Carlisle Cathedral and Hexham Abbey was launched with a stunning concert at Carlisle Cathedral. This festival replaces the Border Choirs Festival which we were involved in for over fifty years. On October 19th 2013 Carlisle Cathedral hosted the combined choirs of boys, girls and lay clerks for a beautiful concert celebrating the music of Henry Purcell and in his centenary year, Benjamin Britten. Between rehearsals there was even enough time for a combined choirs’ football match, with our own Wumi having multiple shots on goal! The day was a great success and for that we must thank Jeremy Suter from Carlisle for planning and coordinating the event.

Vacancies for Choristers!

Page 15: St Nicholas Cathedral Choir News · Hymn to the Virgin on 30th March in celebration of Mothering Sunday. The Girls will also be singing Britten’s A New Year Carol on Monday 13th

St Nicholas Cathedral currently has vacancies for both Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars within its Choirs, with positions available for Altos (male or female), Tenors and Basses. These are paid positions receiving a remuneration of between £2000 and £4000 annually in addition to professional vocal tuition and regular performance opportunities.

The role of the Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars is to complement the choristers of the Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs with their high level of musicianship, professionalism and confident sight reading skills. Each Lay Clerk and Choral Scholar is required to attend four times a week during choir term dates and some additional dates and services throughout the year.

Becoming a Lay Clerk or Choral Scholar is a fantastic opportunity to further musicianship, sight reading skills, vocal technique and knowledge of Anglican Choral repertoire; as a result many alumnae have gone onto further education at conservatoires such as the Royal Northern Academy of Music and other professional careers in Music. For further details regarding these positions, please contact Hannah Davidson.
