The feast of the Visitation recalls to us the following great truths and events: · The visit of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin

Elizabeth shortly after the Annunciation. · The cleansing of John the Baptist from original sin in the

womb of his mother at the words of Our Lady's greeting. · Elizabeth's proclaiming of Mary—under the inspiration of

the Holy Spirit—as Mother of God and "blessed among women".

· Mary's singing of the sublime hymn, Magnificat ("My soul doth magnify the Lord") which has become a part of the daily official prayer of the Church.

MEMORIAL DAY

"No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." Christians are no strangers to sacrifice. Jesus lays down his life for our redemption, martyrs remain faithful to the end, and every believer faces "deaths" in the spiritual life when love requires a re-ordering of preference and priority. On Memorial Day, we honor those who laid down their lives for their nation and for the values we espouse - freedom, justice, and a better world for our children. In a day that often fills with barbeques and boat launches, remember to take some time in prayer! Intercede for those who have died and for the loved ones they left behind, and pray for peace on earth.

Page 5: St. Nicholas - Amazon Web Services...St. Nicholas Men’s Prayer Meeting Thursday, June 14, 7:00 PM at St. Nicholas Church. All men of the parish are welcome. St. Nicholas Day of Prayer,

From your Pastor:

Instead of shying away from pondering the mystery of the Trinity perhaps we can begin from what we do know and enter into the mystery that way. Using the 5W’s (who, what, where, when, why) we begin to see we are better equipped by faith and grace to fruitfully ponder One God, Three Persons. In fact, we are pretty solid on four out of five W’s: Who- God What- ? Where- Everywhere When- now, then, always Why- Love is expressive of itself It seems that the ‘whatness’ of God is our hang-up. ‘What a thing is’ is termed quiddity in fancy theological talk. The quiddity of God has been unpacked through the centuries by the brilliant minds of the Church in different eras from different angles, and while the volumes written are rational and well-ordered, the essence of this unfathomable mystery is elusive. While God is simply too great for our human intellect to comprehend, His intent for us to seek Him though faith is the way we grow and begin to unwrap His mystery. This spiritual growth, nurtured by grace, is our pathway to God. Since we cannot love what we do not know, God calls us to love Him by knowing Him by pondering the Persons of the Trinity individually and collectively. Four out of five ain’t bad. The quiddity of God is meant to be a mystery that draws us closer to Him while at the same time confounding us. It is like the good old carrot & stick image. God leads us forward by dangling His mysterious Truth and Goodness before us. We perceive it readily in the material world, immaterially through His Sanctifying Grace and experience it in a Gospel way of life. That we do not understand the Trinity isn’t the problem. The problem is in the not seeking to do so. God assists us in our quest that will only come to its fruition in Heaven. To love God is to know God. Among the many ways we seek Him, Trinitarian pondering is very fruitful.

Fr. Fitzpatrick

LIVE THE LITURGY

Inspiration for the week...

The love relationship that exists among the Persons of the

Holy Trinity is both intense and intimate. As beautiful as this

teaching is, it demonstrates how human language really pales

in trying to capture the essence of God. The Father brings us

to the creative, powerful, yet gently meticulous part of God

who has brought mountains and hills into being, as well as

each of His children. Still the Father is more than this. The

Son demonstrates the unconditional love of God filled with

endless mercy and compassion. This love really understands

the journey of the marginalized and the poor and has no use

for created powers and structures that alienate and hurt

people. But the Son is even more than this. The Holy Spirit

is the breath of God who teaches wisdom and brings

understanding, who governs the seasons and discerns the

thoughts of human hearts. Yet the Holy Spirit is still more than

this. We worship a God who is beyond and also intimately

bonded to all that He has made, without whom nothing could

be sustained in being. Praise the Holy Trinity!
