Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from all the staff at St. Nessan s C.C Staff Zone At about 9:50am on Friday the 16th of November 2012, three first year Science classes went to UL (University of Limerick) for an interactive demo. about Science. This was part of Science Week and our teachers Ms.Creedon,Ms.Noonan and Ms.Aherne went with us. Off we went on the bus and when we arrived in UL we got tickets and were brought into a big room. We were all given 3D Glasses and were lucky enough to be seated at the front of the room. There were also other schools there. The instructor turned off the lights and the show started. It was very good. We learnt that the sun is just a ball of gas and that it is one of the smallest stars in space. We also learnt if the biggest star exploded, it would take out most of the Milky Way. Everyday we all use space to help us use our mobile phones and the internet. This show lasted 45 minutes and I really enjoyed it. On Wednesday,12th December as part of their JCSP Christmas Celebration,1DA and 1DN attended, ”A Christmas Carol” at the Lime Tree Theatre, Mary Immaculate College. Directed by Myles Breen, Bottom Dog Theatre brought the classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge to life for the 1st Year students. Using music, dance, puppets and live actors, the show brought theatre to life for our students and gave them a real taste of drama. The students responded very well to the story of Scrooge and his visit on Christmas Eve of the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Did Scrooge learn the true meaning of Christmas……..we think so.Thanks to the Literacy team for accompanying them to the theatre , it’s a tough job but somebody has to do it.Ms Marie Toomey.

The students responded very well to the story of Scrooge and his visit on Christmas Eve to the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. Did Scrooge learn the true meaning of Christmas……..Did 1DA/1DN………..?It was great to get them out of the Library for the morning and for many their first visit to live theatre. Their behaviour was very good and they appreciated it.Thanks to the Literacy team for accompanying them to the theatre .Ms Marie Toomey

Once again it’s Christmas Time, time for us to be,

Busy wrapping presents and setting up the tree.

It seems we have so many things, to think of and to do,

We may forget that Christmas, has a deeper meaning too.

A meaning that goes far beyond, the things the eye can see,

Such as Holly wreaths, Mistletoe, and Gifts beneath the tree. For these are only Symbols,

of what happened Christmas morn, When in a little manger,

GOD’s only Son was born. GOD put HIM here upon this Earth,

with one idea in mind. To put New Hope around the World,

and LOVE in all Mankind. So even though we’re busy, and have many things to do,

Let’s not forget that Christmas, has a deeper Meaning too.

TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

Mr. Mcauley recently joined the TY students for a drumming workshop given by Drum Ireland. A very enjoyable day ended in a short performance for fifth years. Our Thanks to Mr. O’ Brien for subsidising the workshop and to Mr. Johnston for his help during the day. We don’t think Mr. Mcauley will swap the guitar for the drum! Ms. O Brien

Dublin Drummer!

We wish you a merry Christmas

A gathering of our International Students took place in the Parent’s room recently. We have students from all over the world and Ms. Carew and Ms. O’ Brien brought the students together for a chat about Christmas in their own countries. Ms. Patton also dropped in for a chat. Ciara and Anna from TY acted as hosts. In January we will have another gathering where Madame Andre will bring in music from each country. Sean Kelly MEP will join us on that day and we will celebrate with food from all the different countries. Ms. O Brien

Gathering of International Students at St. Nessan’s

Ty Students recently visited St. Camillus Home to entertain the residents with a selection of Christmas Carols. Both residents and students enjoyed the visit and it was nice to be asked to go back again. Thanks to Ms Dunne and Mr. Mc Auley for their participation and for providing the music. St Nessan’s staff and students wish all at St. Camillus a peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year.Ms. O Brien

“Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts. No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and

given–when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had as children, the same warmth that enfolds our hearts and our homes.”

Joan Winmill Brown, American author and editor.

“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?”

Bob Hope, American film actor and comedian.

“The perfect Christmas tree? All Christmas trees are perfect!”Charles N. Barnard, American author

sports UpdateU16’s Boy’s Basketball:On Tuesday 4th of December our U16 Boys’ Basketball Team travelled to Shannon to compete in the Regional Basketball Semi-Final against St. Patricks Comprehensive School, Shannon. The game was trilling from start to finish with each team trading scores for the entire 4 quarters of the game. The 3rd quarter was when we started to steal away with 5 excellent 3 pointer shots from our own Aaron Buckley and super baskets from Chris Kaya to stretch us into the lead. Unfortunately they came back at us in the final quarter to level, causing the game to go into 2 extra times to separate the teams. In the end, we lost by just 1 basket (37-39) but all our team (both players and substitutes) were absolutely heroic throughout the game. Couldn’t say enough about how hard they fought to win and the support from everyone on the team was unbelievable. The entire team were a real credit to the school & themselves. Their coach Ms O’Driscoll was so proud! J U19’s Senor Boy’s BasketballIt has been a fantastic year for our senior boys’ basketball team with 2 wins over CBS and St. Enda’s Secondary Schools. Unfortu-nately we didn’t make the league play-offs but have had excellent turn out for training sessions and great competitive games along the way. One of our star players, Rafo Zakrzewski sustained a shoulder injury during the CBS game but had scored enough baskets at the stage to help us to our win! Luckily his shoulder has made a full recovery at this stage. Our team captain Liam Gavin was instrumental in creating a great positive atmosphere within the team and says “Better luck next year to the lads! If only we had had James Cleary playing for us.” Well done to everyone on the team. 1st & 2nd year Leagues will start in the New Year so keep coming to training!! Enjoy the Christmas!Ms. O Driscoll

Homelessness is a local, national and global issue. This means that in every corner of the world there are people without a home to sleep in. There are different reasons why people become homeless. There is never a single reason and many people are not able to cope. There are people as young as us affected by this problem. The Simon Community and Focus Ireland are two groups that provide help locally. We can support them by buying their Christmas cards and by going carol singing with them and supporting their collections. Remember a little goes a long way.Amy Barry LCA2

All at Smile School Completion Programme would like to wish all the staff and students of St. Nessan’s a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

“Books are the quietest and most constanrt of friends, they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors and the most patient of teachers.” Charles Eliot.

The number one objective of the School Library is to provide an inter-esting , suitable and up to date stock of books and other relevant mate-rial for students and staff to access for educational and recreational purposes. We are lucky in that Mr. O Brien, allocates funds every year to add to and to update our stock. In addition, staff and students and agen-cies outside the school, such as Watch House Cross Library, the Limerick Georgia Society and DESC have been very generous with contributions. Local writers, like Helena Close, Sean Spellissy and P.J Taylor haven given us signed copies of their books. we are grateful for all this support. Now that Christmas is coming and you will be clearing out your book-shelves to make room for the influx of new presents, it seems like a good time to ask you to consider a library contribution. We would appreciate any books, magazines, games etc., that you think would be popular and suitable in the library. All gifts will be acknowledged on the library computer system and you will be making a meaningful and long lasting contribution to our students welfare and happiness. Mr. Gale
