Dear Brothers,
Firstly, I want to thank Warden John White, his Co-Chair Tony Biele, and the entire Open Door Pregnancy Social Night committee for such a touching and informative event which was titled Sanctity of Life – Alternatives to Abortion held on Thursday, September 28, 2017. The Knights should be proud of yourselves as you did an awesome job. I'm proud, humbled, and honored to be the Grand Knight of such intelligent, creative and focused people, so thank you again.
I want to also thank Ron Borrello and his team for another incredibly successful Rubber Duck Race. The weather seemed to hold out and it turned out that the winner of the 1st prize was our oldest Knight and Parishioners, Bill and Betty Cole (97 and 92 yrs old). She cried when Ron called her and didn’t know what to do with the TV when he delivered it. Ron said that things like that make it all worthwhile…not to mention the $6,000 we raised! I personally would like to congratulate all who helped prior to the event and the day of, for a job well done.
I ask that we all take a look at our event calendar and try to attend and help where we can. WE NEED EVERYONE TO CHIP IN AND MAKE ALL THESE EVENTS FRUITFUL. Please see the link below for our event calendar: http://kofcknights.org/CouncilSite/events.asp?CNO=11529
Please see the evite sent to all email addresses for the PGK Dinner to honor PGK Bob Maras. This will be held on 10-20-17 @ 7:00PM at the Council 6201 banquet room. Please see details in that email and come enjoy a great night to honor Bob’s term as GK and all he accomplished.
Remember the Christmas Tree Sales is just around the corner and believe it or not, preparations have begun and I drastically need your help folks. Please reach out to me and offer some assistance. Please see the schedule of events for this incredible fundraiser below:
1. 11-11-17 – Set-Up at Glory market 2. 11-18-17 - Delivery of Trees 3. 11-24-17 - Sales start!!!!
Lastly, there are also some brothers that are having some health issues and I request we all keep them in our prayers and with God’s grace, we will be fine.
God Bless you all & Vivat Jesus! Jim Scatigna, PGK * Denotes Holy Day of Obligation
Fr. Tom’s Message
had a copy made for them on the spot. I have been praying and hoping for peace over the course of my long life. From World War II to Korea to Vietnam I have been fervently praying for peace for our country. During the Vietnam conflict I volunteered to become a chaplain. However, for whatever reason, the Archbishop turned my request down (never did get an explanation!)
Briefly, the message of the homily was the fact that we don’t listen to Jesus – when He admonishes us to love others as He loves us, how harshly He condemned self-righteousness, how He often put teeth into the gospel, how we should look around to see all those who are searching for meaning in their life, searching for identity, for fulfillment, for acceptance. Let us listen to Him. Loving isn’t always easy. We must embrace the cross with Jesus. The cross may be heavy but the rewards are tremendous. God Bless us and the people of Venezuela
Fr. Tom
Dear Brothers in Christ,
This month’s message will be rather personal. A few weeks ago I was asked to minister at all three masses at St. Monica. It’s always an honor and a source of genuine satisfaction to return to the people I served for eight years after my retirement from my 45 year ministry in the Archdiocese of Newark. The gist of this “message” concerns an experience I encountered at one of the three masses I preached at.
After one of the Sunday liturgies a man and his wife approached me after mass and asked if they could have a copy of my homily. They were visiting from Venezuela and were apparently endeavoring to bring a cessation of the violence that has afflicted that nation. I must admit that I was flustered at their request and had
Ping Pong Demonstration
The St. Monica youth group cordially invites you to watch Fr. Alex play Ping Pong against his coach Jeff on Friday, October 6th from 6:30 - 9:00 pm in the parish hall. Due to popular demand, this is a return performance and open to everyone. Last year we had over 50 people with approximately 25 children. Everyone had fun. This family event is free and light refreshments will be served. Come out and cheer on Fr Alex to his victory! After the demonstration, Fr Alex and his coach will offer to teach the children how to play this fun game. We all knew Fr. Alex was here to serve, but come see him “serve” a little differently on Friday, October 6th at 6:30 PM in the Parish Hall
Knight(s) of the Month
I am proud to announce Walter Cooper as Knight of The Month for September 2017. Walter has become a familiar face at our Council meetings and has proven to offer great input and ideas. He has also volunteered his time to take pictures at our Sanctity of Life Social this past September 28, 2017. Walt was gracious enough to "BRING THE FUN!" during the Rubber Duck Race and had everyone up, dancing and entertained all day So join me in congratulating Walter for a job well done and being chosen as Knight of The Month for September 2017!
I am proud to announce Mike Budrick as our other Knight of The Month for September 2017. Mike has stepped up and was an integral part of both the Sanctity of Life Social and the Rubber Duck Race. Also, without any hesitation, he instantly volunteered to help and ran right out and assisted Fr. Tom when he had plumbing problems. Mike’s selfless acts and willingness to help those in need reflect positively not only upon himself as a Knight, but on the entire council as a whole. Please help me congratulate Mike as his selection as Knight of the Month for September 2017!
Family of the Month
Rob and Trish Guimaraes
Rob and Trish and family are always there leading the charge at our events as well as during Mass at Church. Rob serves as usher and Trish is always smiling at the door greeting folks to make them feel at home. I always hear such nice things from our parishioners about this family and it is my blessing to know them. Please congratulate Rob, Trish, Monica and Alex on their selection as Family of the Month for September 2017!

Baby Bottle Boomerang Overview
It's really simple...it's called Baby Bottle Boomerang because you distribute empty baby bottles to
church congregations, and just like a well-tossed boomerang, they come back to you full of coins,
currency and checks. And, the bottles can be used over and over again, creating an ongoing
fundraising and promotional program within the church community. In our case, all collected monies
will go towards replenishing funds and supplies donated that helped put an ultrasound machine at the
screening clinic at The Open Door Center in Toms River, NJ
The Baby Bottle Boomerang will help your organization to:
Increase the numbers that hear your pro-life message. Elevate the awareness level of your ministry in the community. Raise significant funds with relatively low up-front costs.
What is it?
The Baby Bottle Boomerang is one of the most effective fundraisers for pro-life ministries in use
today. It helps meet financial needs and increases awareness in the community about your ministry.
While supporting churches will generally be happy to participate, it is also a great way to bring new
churches on board.
The Baby Bottle Boomerang is simple to conduct, effective in communicating your message, and very
productive in raising much-needed funds, regardless of the size of the ministry. It is a simple,
convenient way to reach the families and individuals in the churches. No extra meetings or time
commitments are required of the participants.
Since its inception in 2001, over 1,400 pro-life organizations have used the Baby Bottle
Boomerang to raise over $70,000,000 and to inform the church community about their services and
needs. Baby bottles will be distributed to the parish community during the weekend of October
7th and 8th, and a publicity campaign is done to inform the people about the ministry and become
motivated to help. After each mass in the month of October the bottles can be returned to St.
Monica’s church filled with coins, currency and checks.
If you wish your donations can be made in Honor or in Memory of a loved one, please fill out the selection card inserted in each bottle. We will place them on our Special Prayer List to be announced in the future. Thank you for your continued support of this very important project.

COOKS FOR ST. MARTHA
Cooks for St. Martha (The patron saint of cooks) are needed. Though I have a group of cooks already, I could really use more so as not to continue calling the same people and wearing out their good nature. A handful of them are Knights and their wives, however, they are only a handful. We like to help people just coming out of the hospital or who are going through treatment (usually cancer). We bring meals for the first week home for a new mother and father or it could also be someone who is recovering from surgery. There might be a family with someone in Hospice. These meals are meant to be temporary until these folks are on their feet again. A fresh meal will be cooked for the whole family or a single person if they live alone. The meals are delivered to their home ready to eat. As I tell everyone in my message in our Sunday bulletin, "We are many and wish only to serve." If after prayerful thought and discussion you decide you and your wife would like to be part of Saint Martha's Cooks, please call me, Gloria Carlon at (732) 961-7535 to give me your name and phone number.

The Knights held a Sanctity of Life Social on Thursday, Sept 28th where a representative of The Open Door Pregnancy Center came to offer his thanks and praise to the Knights for all their support and to talk openly about all the choices that are out there for the expectant mother who may not be aware of all the help that is available to save a life.
Respect for life – October 2017…Fear In Our Lives
The time was June sixth, 1944 and as I sat in my seat with 56 other third graders the loud speaker came alive. It normally told us when school was to begin and end. Today was a very different day. General Eisenhower, General of all Armed Forces announced that there was to be an invasion of Europe by many countries and it was to be the greatest battle between good and evil forces. At that time Germany ruled most of Europe by brute force and total intimidation. They had been winning this great war but now that was about to change “with God’s help” according to our great general. He painted a picture that brought fear to the minds of us third graders. What would happen now? I had a big brother that was in the Army, and what is more we all had someone we knew that had blue stars in the window depicting someone who was serving in the military. God forbid they were gold stars, as they depicted the loss of a loved one. War was brought very close to kids in those days and the nuns would have us pray every day for the war to end. I remember so many things from that era, especially the air raids that would send us kids scrambling under the table. Fear was very real and it existed in the minds of third graders.
Now a few wars later there are still bad guys in the world and I fear that there will be other wars. My son was in Afghanistan and we went thru the same fears my folks experienced with my big brother. Man being man will mean that there will always be evil in the world. What is important is how we deal with the bad guys.
Now in my later years I find new fears entering my life. The kind that we may think of at times but never put all the pieces together. I am referring to the natural disasters that seem to be coming more often and greater in size, severity and scope.
When was the last time you saw hurricanes with so much force or frequency? There are floods resulting in enormous damage with entire provinces wiped out. Can we forget the incredible earthquakes in Mexico? I wonder if the kids in Mexico went under their tables to hide from falling roofs or other outside dangers. How often do we have to be hit with a two by four to make us put the pieces together and make us think. Is there something that is happening that indicates we are being given a warning by God?
Got another story for you…In a small town in Portugal, Fatima, there were three small cousins, Jacinta Marto (7) Lucia dos Santos (10) and Francisco Marto (9) They used to tend to the sheep in the fields and when they were not tending the sheep they played games in the fields just like kids do everywhere. But there were great things that were to happen in their young lives.
An angel appeared to them in the fields and told them they would have a visitor from heaven. In a few days there was a very bright light and it was the Blessed Mother. She told them that She would appear on the thirteenth of each month for six months and that she would have a messages that were to be given to the world.
Space factors would not permit all the messages but on the sixth visit, The Blessed Mother gave a sign of the power of God. The sun was bright but it danced and if people looked at it, it did not bother their eyesight. Over Seventy thousand people witnessed the miracle and even though it had been raining heavily everyone was dry. There is much more to the “miracles of Fatima” but Our Lady’s message is clear, say the rosary and due penance. On Saturday October 14, (noon) we will take part in the Rosary Crusade. We will join with 20,000 other teams and over one million people will be saying the rosary along with a few other prayers. Our team will be in front of the Church of Saint Monica. Join us as we celebrate the goodness of Mary.
I still have fears but I am tired of getting hit with the two by fours. I think I will try to pay more attention to Our Lady’s advice. Bob
