Aims and Philosophy of the Exchange
This exchange has been devised by the French Department of St Michael's Grammar
School, in conjunction with the French Lycée Le Bon Sauveur.
Our objective is to ensure that this exchange is an ongoing success and will help promote
an on-going "sisterhood" between the schools.
Thank you for accepting to host a student, one of the 24 French students in the group, to
Melbourne. Unfortunately as you know all too well, our party of St Michael’s students
were unable to go to France last December-January. We are currently exploring the
possibilities of having a return trip/return trips during the 2016-2017 summer.
The exchange project is based on the principle of immersion, both linguistic and socio-
cultural.
During Term time, some of the French students' time will be spent at school (with their
Australian correspondent or in special lessons organised for them), or in host families.
Several days have been kept aside for the French group to go on excursions in and around
Melbourne. Although immersion is the keyword for the success of our programme, we
want to avoid any feeling of isolation. The French students will be able to meet every day
at school, and during the excursions. Two French accompanying teachers will be there for
counselling.
During the 3 week-holiday, the French students will be with their host families. A French
accompanying teacher will be permanently on call.
It is important that any potential problem (however small one might think it is) be
reported to organisers, so that it can be dealt with as soon as possible.
French students are required to talk to teachers before ringing their parents in
France.
In the same way, we would ask Australian host families and students to come and
talk to us as quickly as possible about any problem or misunderstanding (as minor
as it may seem at the time) which might be arising.
We have worked hard to ensure the students' and their host families enjoyment, as we
strongly believe this is the way to prompt exchanges, to promote a better understanding of
languages and cultures, and ultimately to start enduring friendships.

Being a Host Family
During the stay, ‘your’ French student is expected to be considered as part of the family.
The exchange is based on mutual friendship, and cultural/linguistic interests and you are
assured of the same kind of welcome in France. It is therefore important that the French
student should conform to family habits and lifestyle. He/she has been asked to help
when he can and to try to be aware of the family's patterns; to keep his/her room tidy and
not to raid the fridge or leave the table before others have finished!!
When they arrive…
Between their departure from their home and their arrival at St Michael’s, the group will
have been travelling for approximately 26 hours (if they don’t suffer any delay!!). You
will also have discovered by now, that their plane arrives at 1.00am (!)
Needless to say that our French guests are going to be EXHAUSTED when you meet
them. If you add the natural language barrier, it will be a wonder if they communicate at
all with you during their first day/night/day at home with you.
We would advise you not to organise any tiring activity (if any) for them on that day and
allow them to sleep as much as possible so that they can recuperate and re-establish a
normal sleep pattern. We understand, however, that Tuesday is a working day for most of
you/us, students and parents alike, and that it might be complex to keep your guest at
home. Please, let us know so that we can put some sort of plan B in place.
Please, make a point of speaking in English with the student you will be hosting, as it is
one of the aims of the trip. In cases of great difficulty, don't forget the French are very
good at communicating with their hands!
NB: If you are keen to practise your French with him/her (especially Year 11 and 12
students, we hope!!) come to an arrangement that is mutually advantageous.
Just say moitié/ moitié anglais et français!
The French students will also be asked to participate in some French classes at St
Michael's.
Family life, activities and outings Whether you organise many or few activities specifically for your French guest, he/she is
expected to participate. He/she should, however, be able to ring and see his French
friends (you will find a list of details in this booklet).
Whatever the French student' s plans are, he/she must ask the parents of his/her
host family for permission and let them know where he/she is at all times.
6
Meals The French guests are expected to respect meal times and habits. Still, there might be
some foods they are allergic to or really don't like. Please, check with them early in the
stay. Simple problems of this type can make a stay highly successful or disastrous for a
teenager.
Lunches at school should be provided by host families (same as your daughter's /
son's). On the planned days of excursions in Melbourne (see itinerary), we ask each
host family to provide a cut lunch for their guest.
Washing Of course, thank you for providing your guest with towels, bed linen, etc…
As for their personal clothes, please indicate to them what to do with their laundry.
Contacting his/her parents We ask every host family to let their French guest quickly ring his/her parents when they
arrive at your place, to let them know that everything is fine.
Don't forget the 8-hour time difference.
(8.00 am in Melbourne = 12 midnight ‘last night’ in France)
Transport We ask you to provide your exchange student with a Myki card (concession, as they all
are under 16) on arrival.
Whether they use it or not to come to school, they will need it to move around
Melbourne.
School, Timetables
The French students must come to school with their correspondent everyday, even on
those days when group excursions are planned (excursions will depart from and return to
the school, within school hours as much as is possible).
For some of the school days, she/he will follow your daughter's / son's timetable, going to
her/his classes. They will also be asked to participate in some French classes.
We have also asked several members of the St Michael’s staff to offer diverse “lessons”
addressed exclusively to the French group.
Every day, we and the French accompanying teachers will meet them at school to check
that all is well or to help if not.
The French group will be spending 4 days at St Michael’s (one of them being the Inter-
house Cross-country Carnival… no doubt a fantastic cultural experience for them!)
These days are in the process of being firmly organized with the cooperation of some of
the St Michael’s staff.
7
The French students will have a mix of the following:
Lessons with their correspondents
Special lessons of English language, literature, Australian culture (history, art,
cooking…)
Explanatory sessions of Great Expectations to help those who will see it
Design Tech and Photography
Sport (including a presentation of AFL)
Assemblies; access to Library; access to School IT and network
Uniform: Of course, French students are not required to wear the St Michael's uniform.
They are asked, however, to come to school in appropriate and clean clothes. We would
be grateful if host families could check this in the morning.

General Information Insurance
The French student you host is covered by full insurance. The insurance policy will cover:
cancellation, medical and additional expenses, loss of luggage and documents, accidental
death and personal liability.
In any claim event, please contact teachers immediately.
Pocket Money and valuables All basic living expenses (+ tour and excursions) have been included into the total cost of
the trip, and all other costs incurred by family activities will be the responsibility of the
host family.
Pocket money will therefore cover personal costs of the French student (leisure, presents,
telephone,....)
French students have been warned that travelling anywhere with large amounts of
cash is not a good idea…
and that possessing (or having the authorised use of) an international bank card seems to
be the easiest way. It also allows their parents to deposit some money in case of
emergency.
Most students will come with a mobile phone, for which they will wish to purchase an
Australian SIM card. We would be grateful if you could help them with this purchase as
soon as they arrive, and let us know of their numbers.
Teachers will keep airlines tickets but the students will need to keep their own passports
for identification purposes.
We would be grateful to host families if they could check where the passports are,
maybe even put them in a safe place. Passports should not be taken to school.
Excursions
As part of the planned excursion in Melbourne, the French students will walk around
Melbourne in a rather “flâneur” way. They will also have 3 day-long excursions, along
the Great Ocean Road, on the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island.
They will not have time during these excursions, however, to visit Melbourne’s
landmarks in any depth or time. During the weekends, or the holidays, and
depending on individual interests, you may wish to go to the NGV, Melbourne Zoo,
Heidi, ACMI, ….
The greater Melbourne and Victoria (the Ballarat region, the Yarra Valley,
Healesville, Black Spur and Marysville, Werribee, the Dandenongs ….) have not
been included in the programme and are places which you may also like to consider
as possible outings, during the weekends or the holidays.
Please, ask Isabelle M.H., Laurence B., or R. Huntington if you need /have more
ideas.
