As I write this, I am home, waiting out the Catastrophic Fire Danger day and watching the CFS website for fire updates as the winds pick up and the dust flies. We are fortunate that since the new fire ratings began in 2009, there has only been a handful of days which have warranted this
move by Emergency Services and none of the previous catastrophic days have fallen during school time. And despite the inconvenience of school closure for all of us, I understand the precaution. None of us need to try very hard to remember the stories of fire disasters which not only claimed houses, but lives. Many of those reading this will have been in the midst of these types of events during their lives. Living in Australia, we come to know the dangers of bushfires from an early age and in ‘The Hills’ there is a general sense of ‘when’ not ‘if’. It is normal, in times of danger or peril, to be afraid. Fear is our body’s way of telling us to act. But, when fear remains outside of these times of danger, it can be a thing which holds us back from a full, god given life. Fear of the unknown, of failure, of criticism or rejection or of getting hurt can hold us back from achieving our dreams or our life’s purpose. It is easy to let fear make us think that we are not enough. But God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies those who are called. In most of the old testament bible stories we see people who are afraid. Moses did not want the job of leader, Jonah jumped ship to run from his task and Noah was ridiculed for his ‘boat’ idea. None of these people were qualified to be stalwarts of the Bible but they became strong because God made them to be, because they had a job to do. When life throws us curve balls and we begin to fear, it is very easy to curl in a ball and focus on ourselves and our worries rather than trust that God has a plan for us. If we push on and allow God into the middle of our fear, things begin to work again. When we have faith, our fear disappears. God is calling you to live out his plan right now. It might be a scary plan; you might feel underqualified or worried that you will fail. Have faith. God is with you and he has promised to be there with you always. ‘But the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline’. 2 Timothy 1:7 Terri Taylor Principal

I don’t know about you but the best part of my day is often sitting down and
having a chat with my collegues and really nutting out and working through
a problem, or planning together. It teaches me about myself and my
reactions to others when they have ideas that are different to my own.
Social Skills are connected to each of the other skill sets and often make the
challenge of learning about life just that little bit more interesting. But we
know if we don’t have some skills in this area it can be a struggle.
The PYP list the following as integral to the development of Social Skills.
Accepting responsibility – for completing tasks and learning
Respecting others – when listening to and giving feedback
Cooperating – turn taking and using maners
Resolving conflict – learning to compromise and being fair
Group decision-making – discussing ideas and asking questions so that a
consensus can be reached
Adopting a variety of group roles – knowing how to lead and follow at
different times
When I look at the list of these skills I realise that much reflection needs to
take place about me and my interactions. The challenge is for us to help the
students to be reflective about their interactions; something that we work
on through our Restorative Practice discussions.

180 Celebration Weekend
Grandfriend’s Day Over 230 Grandfriend’s visited us on Friday 8 November to enjoy a morning with our students. The entire day was themed to celebrate our 180th year since the school began and Grandfriend’s enjoyed our worship service where the BLC students reflected on ‘generations’. During the concert, MLC students recited Mulga Bill’s Bicycle along with their own version of the poem, which included the bike safety lessons they had learned. A delicious morning tea was followed by visits to the classrooms and then a Picnic Lunch. We thank all of the Grandparents who made the trip to St Michael’s to visit with us. See you again next year.
180 Celebration Dinner Saturday 9 November was time for the grown-ups to celebrate the 180 years of our schools beginning, with a dinner and silent auction at the Hahndorf Resort. We thank the P&F for their outstanding organisation of the event which was en-joyed by all who attended. The online auction and dinner raised over $12,000 for our Outdoor Learning Space. We are incredibly grateful to the many organisations and people who generously donated to our school.
180 Worship and Family Day Sunday 10 November began with a special thanksgiving worship service. The Senior Choir sang with the St Michael’s church choir to provide spine tingling music during our service. We are thankful to Kylie Johns for the work that she has done with our senior choir over many months. Thanks also to the students who were involved in the service and to Mrs Stevens and Frau Westermann for working with students to prepare. The service was followed by a fun day which was focussed on the students. There were many free activities for the chil-dren to do including bouncy castles, face painting and old-fashioned games with prizes. We thank Camp Australia for their kind donation toward the bouncy castles. For the adults, there were history displays and films, wine-tasting of the 180-celebration wine and school tours. Thanks also to the Church Ladies Guild and Café 3:16 for setting up a café in the gym for people to enjoy.

Grand Opening of the Outdoor Learning Space It was with a great sense of joy that we opened our new Outdoor Learning Space on 10 November. The nature play space was officially opened by John V. and Lyn Nitschke, who have supported the school through the donation which enabled the purchase of the property in 2014. The learning space is a multi-purpose area designed for both free play and planned learning experiences. We also thank the P&F for contributing financially to this project through funds raised during 2019.
Champions Challenge Champions Challenge is a competition between Lutheran Schools in the Adelaide Hills and Murraylands area, held annually at Cornerstone College. Our students were exceptional in their sportsmanship and demonstrated resilience as they competed throughout the day in changeable weather conditions. At the end of the day we took home the shield with a narrow 5-point win.

Student Achievements Jonquil and Amelia competed at the recent Urrbrae Interschool Gymkhana. Millie got a first, a second and a third in the led ring and Jonquil got a third in the pony not exceeding 12.2
Whole School Transition Day We will again be holding a whole school transition on Friday 6 December. On this day, all students will move to their 2020 classroom and spend the day with these students and the teacher. Having a transition time before the school holidays has been shown to reduce anxiety about the following year, enabling children to have a more enjoyable break and come back to school easily at the start of the new school year. Knowing who your child’s teacher is, will also assist you to communicate with them, should you need to share information prior to the start of 2020.
Icy Pole Wednesday During Term 4 our SRC will be selling Icy Poles at lunch on Wednesdays for 0.50c. Money raised will go to the SRCs
chosen charity.
Pick Up & Drop Off We would like to remind families that with the ‘Kiss and Drop’ zone on Church Street there is an expectation that drivers:
Display their family name in the front window of their vehicle
Allow their vehicle to become stationary at the end of the drop off zone closest to Balhannah Road
Remain in their vehicle or if required to exit the vehicle, must not move further than 3m away from their vehicle
Allow students to exit and enter the vehicle curbside only
Continue to move forward, along the drop-off zone, as space becomes available when vehicles exit the zone
Do not remain stationary for longer than 2 minutes at drop-off times (8:30 am to 8:50 am) & (3:20 pm - 3:35 pm)
Do not double park anywhere along Church Street

Mrs Burden has been a valued, long time staff member and we wish her every blessing as she pursues new horizons in the future. Mrs Brenda Klose will complete her contract position at the end of this year. We sincerely thank Mrs Klose for stepping in to SLC and for her wonderful support of our senior students throughout this year. Mrs Belinda Glynn has been filling a vacancy in Creative Arts for a couple of years now and with Mrs Sugars coming back to the role, Mrs Glynn will not be returning to Creative Arts in 2020. Belinda has worked in a variety of capacities over many years at St Michael’s and we sincerely thank her for her willingness to wear many hats and do it so well. Mrs Novalene Babidge will be retiring at the end of 2019. Novalene has worked in various roles over the last 18+ years. She will be missed by all who have worked with her. Class allocations are almost complete and these will be advised to families toward the end of the year, when our students participate in the Whole School Transition Day on Friday 6 December.
Canteen Canteen services are provided by Cornerstone College once a week on a Thursday. Orders need to be placed online, via www.flexischools.com.au, no later than 8:00 am on Wednesday. Instructions for ordering can be found on the flexischools website or via the St Michael’s front office.

The St Michael’s Lutheran School App is developed by PCSchool to link into our Student Management System. Each parent will have their own login and be asked to set a personal password. You should have received two emails from the school. 1. Instructions on how to download & use the App
2. An individual email invitation from the school to register for the new app. Within this email there is a ‘click here’ link

Cornerstone Registration of Enrolment Current Year 4 student families were sent an email recently on behalf of Cornerstone College relating to the enrolment process for potential students starting in 2022. Music at St Michael’s BAND : Cornet, horn, baritone, euphonium, and tuba lessons: In association with the Hahndorf Youth Band, students can learn to play a brass instrument. Sign up to the learner program at only $40 per term, and children receive FREE hire of a brass instrument with Monday after school lessons commencing from 5.00pm, PLUS a second FREE weekly lesson at school. For more information contact Theo Prucha on 0450 542 535 or [email protected] CHOIR will be held on Monday afternoons this term and will be led by Mr Theo Prucha. Choir is open to all students. If your child enjoys singing, but does not want to join the formal choir, Mr Prucha will be offering a choir club on Wednesday lunchtime, to support those who are in the choir and want more singing practice and to encourage students who just enjoy singing informally. Clarinet, Flute, Saxaphone & Trumpet Lessons are available through Andrew Scott. It is not necessary for student to own an instrument as they can hire one from Andrew.
