COURSE SELECTION FOR 2020-2021: On January 27 and 28 counselors visited classes to discuss course selection for the 2020-2021 school year. Parents/guardians are responsible for reviewing and discuss-ing academic requirements with their children and indicating parental ap-proval of the student’s proposed schedule by signing the appropriate line indicated on the course selection sheet.

Teacher signatures are also required for specific classes indicated by aster-isks (*) noted on the course selection sheets. Students must obtain teacher signatures for those classes prior to online registration in order to be considered for enrollment in that class. All current students must reg-ister for classes electronically using their activated PlusPortals student ac-count. Course registration opened on the afternoon of Monday, January 27, and will remain open through Monday, February 3.

Completed course selection sheets are to be signed by both the student and his/her parent/guardian prior to completing online registration and then returned to their grade level counselor by Tuesday, February 4. No course schedule changes will be considered until May 1 unless there is a discrepancy as determined by the counselor. At that time, students may meet with school counselors if they still have concerns regarding their 2020-2021 class schedules. Any requests for schedule changes must be placed in writing by the parent(s) and submitted to the appropriate grade level counselor during the period of May 1-May 21. All schedule change fees will be waived during this period. After May 21, all written requests for schedule changes must be accompanied by a check for $25.00 made paya-ble to St. Michael the Archangel High School.

Please note: The scheduling requests submitted are considered a com-mitment on the part of the students and their parents for enrollment in the classes they have asked the school to provide. Selections made at this time are for the entire 2020-2021 school year.

FINALIZING COLLEGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Early in the second semester for seniors is a good time to finalize any docu-mentation necessary for a student’s college admission requirements such as sending immunization records, completing housing and orientation regis-tration, or sending in test scores. Please make sure your senior has referred to his/her college admission checklist per the college institution to com-plete these requirements.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TUITION LOTTERY PRO-GRAM: Members of the Knights of Columbus having children in a Cath-olic school are eligible to enroll their children in a free lottery to help pay for their child’s Catholic school tuition. Each quarter names of four stu-dents will be randomly drawn from the entries and $500 will be directly paid to the child’s Catholic school. For more information or to register, please visit http://louisianakc.org/programs/youth/tuitionlottery.pdf . This program is administered by the Louisiana State Council of the Knights of Columbus.

REMINDER TO FILE THE FAFSA: Seniors and Senior Parents, please remember to complete the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, in order to receive any financial assistance and/or to apply for TOPS and other scholarships per the instructions of colleges and universi-ties. Your FAFSA must be filed by June 30 in order to receive TOPS. Visit www.fafsa.gov to get star ted or to finish your application. If you need assistance completing the FAFSA, please call the LELA FAFSA Helpline at 1-844-GO-FAFSA.

REQUEST FOR COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE LETTERS FROM SENIORS: In order to assist in college preparation and planning, it is criti-cal that seniors and their parents provide Ms. Montgomery with copies of all letters of acceptance and any scholarship and financial aid awards from colleg-es and universities, whether or not the senior will eventually attend that partic-ular school. Please send copies of these documents via email to [email protected], or by fax or in person. The names of the colleges and uni-versities to which the senior has been accepted will be published in the Gradu-ation Program, while a list of the scholarships which were offered to the student will appear in the Baccalaureate Mass & Senior Honors Convocation Program. The only way we may publish this information is if parents and students share this information with us. Please provide Ms. Montgomery with copies of acceptance and scholarship letters as soon as they are received.

A Message from the Principal: The first day in February marks the last day of Catholic Schools Week. At St. Michael High School, we are so fortunate to have the most dedicated and talented teachers and staff. Our parents are second to none as they partner with us to help form their children as committed disciples of Christ. Our St. Michael students seem to give their best in their academic studies, their faith development, and their clubs and sports. Our hearts are filled with joy and gratitude for the cooperation and support of our entire school family.

During the last day of Catholic Schools Week, St. Michael High School is fortunate to be able to host the Diocesan Middle School Quiz Bowl. Fifth through eighth graders from our Catholic elementary schools were on campus to celebrate the academic excellence that is a part of Catholic schools. We were happy to welcome them all to our campus.

As a school community, we celebrated our Distinguished Educator for St. Michael High School, Mrs. Lynne Guarisco, and our Stu-dent of the Year, Miss Caitlin Brumfield. We also recognized our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Julie Lechich, for twenty years of service to Catholic schools and our beloved math teacher, Mrs. Karen Timmreck, for her forty years of service to Catholic schools. We cele-brated with cake on Thursday and jeans on Friday.

How fortunate we are to have such a wonderful school community! Thank you to all who make St. Michael High School the out-standing and one of a kind school that it is. We ask for your continued prayers for our ministry of education.

God Bless,

Ellen B. Lee, Principal
