“Faith in the resurrection of Jesus says that there is a future for every human being; the cry for unending life which is a part of the person is indeed answered. God exists: that is the real message of Easter. Anyone who even begins to grasp what this means also knows what it means to be redeemed.”

Pope Benedict XVI

LIFELONG SERVICE “I am going fishing.” What an announcement! If asked

who made it, and not told it was a Bible quote, we might guess “Grandpa” or “Uncle Fred,” or admit, “I said that last summer!” But it is a Bible quote, from today’s Gospel. The person who said it also once declared, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Yes, it’s Peter! So today’s announcement seems quite the comedown. Last Sunday Jesus said, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” But Peter seems determined to return to his pre-apostolic occupation, until Jesus intervenes, making Peter’s later announcement deeper, “Lord, you know that I love you,” and Peter’s apostolic calling clearer, “Tend my sheep.” Peter does so. Acts presents the consequences: Peter declares, “We must obey God rather than men.” As Revelation proclaims, “Worthy is the Lamb”—to receive Peter’s lifelong service, and ours.

TODAY’S READINGSFirst Reading — God exalted Jesus as leader and savior (Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41).Psalm — I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30).Second Reading — To the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might (Revelation 5:11-14).Gospel — When the disciples came ashore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread (John 21:1-19 [1-14]).

READINGS FOR THE WEEKMonday: Acts 6:8-15; Ps 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30; Jn 6:22-29Tuesday: Acts 7:51 — 8:1a; Ps 31:3cd-4, 6, 7b, 8a, 17, 21ab; Jn 6:30-35Wednesday: Acts 8:1b-8; Ps 66:1-3a, 4-7a; Jn 6:35-40Thursday: Acts 8:26-40; Ps 66:8-9, 16-17, 20; Jn 6:44-51Friday: Acts 9:1-20; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Jn 6:52-59Saturday: Acts 9:31-42; Ps 116:12-17; Jn 6:60-69 Sunday: Acts 13:14, 43-52; Ps 100:1-2, 3, 5; Rv 7:9, 14b-17; Jn 10:27-30 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCESSunday: Third Sunday of Easter; Cinco de Mayo; Ramadan (Islamic observance) beginsFriday: St. Damien de Veuster

SERVICIO A LARGO PLAZO “Voy a pescar”.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONThe Gospel today sees Peter and his colleagues after

the Resurrection, returning to Galilee and resuming the family business. They are fishing by night. Although it is true that fish feed by night, the mention of darkness here is more about the human spirit than it is about fishing advice. Modern life keeps darkness effectively under control; much of the world has been glowing radiantly through the night for a century. Yet just as surely as the Risen Christ breaks into Peter’s fishing, so does he break into the usual patterns of our own darkness, electric lights notwithstanding. It is Easter, and we are the people of the light.

In our tradition, Evening Prayer, celebrated in monasteries, parishes, cathedrals, and homes everywhere, is a kind of solemn protest against the darkness and its claims, an act of praise for our light bearing God, and a commitment to carrying that light forward. Sunset is a turning point of our day, felt less acutely in an electrified world, but still an effective reminder that one day darkness overtakes us all. Yet our Eastering has taught us in a hundred ways that the victory belongs to the Bearer of Light. Easter summons us to transform our everyday “blackouts,” perhaps in a way as simple as a whispered prayer of thanks at evening for the blessings of the day.

parientes alguna estampita religiosa.

Third Sunday of Easter“Smoting” or Non-“smoting”?

Some times I get angry at things that frustrate me. I’m driving home and traffic slows to a crawl. The electricity goes out while I’m watching a favorite show. So I have to struggle with the line in our first reading, where the disciples were “rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name” (Acts 5:41). They weren’t just frustrated; they were flogged for believing in Jesus. And still they rejoiced.

Imagine rejoicing over pain and suffering. These disciples had seen Jesus on the cross. When he rose from the dead, they began to see that his suffering was not a tragic loss, but a sign of his glory. They loved him so much that they took to heart his command to take up the cross. And when they suffered because they believed in him, as is recounted in today’s reading, they saw that as a way to imitate Jesus on the cross. Those who had followed him in life could also follow him to the cross—and many did that literally, by dying for their faith.

Most of us today rarely have the chance to die for our faith. We may wonder if we even have the courage it would take. Instead, we usually find ourselves suffering because we have done wrong. God does not use special interventions to smite sinners. Think of the times we were punished as a child. Think of the times we lost a friend because of a cruel remark. Think of the times we got a ticket for speeding. These are the result of our actions. These are sufferings that we would rather avoid.

Jesus, however, suffered for our sins when he was totally innocent. If he could do that, could we not accept suffering for our own sins when it comes? We may not be ready to rejoice in that suffering, but we can at least try to learn from it. If we behave differently because of it, if we can grow to be better persons, then that suffering can be our way of accepting the cross.

Of course, not all suffering is caused by the sins of the person suffering. The suffering of the innocent is a great mystery, a cause for sorrow and a challenge to help where we can. But like growing pains, all suffering is a step to new life in Christ. And that is what Easter is about.

TESTIMONIAL

Good Afternoon,My husband and I both considered ourselves

non practicing Catholics and didn't attend Mass for various personal reasons. Lately, we both have been feeling compelled to go back to church. One of us would say to the other every weekend, "We really need to start going to church." We live relatively close to your church, and I talked my husband into going this past Sunday at 11:30. We walked in a minute late, so we missed the name of the priest. I'm writing this email because he spoke directly to me and my husband in his homily. Well, not directly but his message hit us hard. My husband is a drug addict. I have been trying to get him to go to counseling, but he has fought me on the subject. It has caused us tremendous stress. He was in denial until he went to church on Sunday. I saw a change in him after the priest mentioned to anyone doing drugs, "Stop." He also mentioned how no one has the right to judge someone. There is only one person we need to answer to, and that is God. I had told that to my husband while we were driving to Mass that morning. No doubt in either of our minds that God was speaking directly to us through the priest. It brought tears to both of our eyes, and my husband is not a crier. I see a difference in my husband since then. Even though it's only one day, I see it, and I hope this is the beginning of big changes for him. I truly believe that with God on our side, we can fight any battle.

Just thought I'd share this with you and hopefully whoever reads this will let the priest know that we heard his message. Please thank him for me.Sincerely, Stephanie Rooks

WORDS AND DEEDSWhen people hear us speak God’s word, they marvel at its beauty and power; when they see what little impact it has on our daily lives, they laugh and poke fun at us.

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH

Cardinal Robert Sarah is publishing the third of his book-length interviews with Nicolas Diat: The Day is Far Spent. An unflinching diagnosis, but one full of hope in the midst of the spiritual and moral crisis of the West.

1) In the first part of your book, you describe “a spiritual and religious collapse.” How does this collapse manifest itself? Does it only affect the West or are other regions of the world, such as Africa, also affected by it?

The spiritual crisis involves the entire world. But its source is in Europe. People in the West are guilty of rejecting God. They have not only rejected God. Friedrich Nietzsche, who may be considered the spokesman of the West, has claimed: “God is dead! God remains dead! And we have killed him…” We have murdered God. In view of God’s death among men, Nietzsche would replace him with a prophetic “Superman.”

The spiritual collapse thus has a very Western character. In particular, I would like to emphasize the rejection of fatherhood. Our contemporaries are convinced that, in order to be free, one must not depend on anybody. There is a tragic error in this. Western people are convinced that receiving is contrary to the dignity of human persons. But civilized man is fundamentally an heir, he receives a history, a culture, a language, a name, a family. This is what distinguishes him from the barbarian. To refuse to be inscribed within a network of dependence, heritage, and filiation condemns us to go back naked into the jungle of a competitive economy left to its own devices. Because he refuses to acknowledge himself as an heir, man is condemned to the hell of liberal globalization in which individual interests confront one another without any law to govern them besides profit at any price.

In this book, however, I want to suggest to Western people that the real cause of this refusal to claim their inheritance and this refusal of fatherhood is the rejection of God. From Him we receive our nature as man and woman. This is intolerable to modern minds. Gender ideology is a Luciferian refusal to receive a sexual nature from God. Thus some rebel against God and pointlessly mutilate themselves in order to change their sex. But in reality they do not fundamentally change anything of their structure as man or woman.

The West refuses to receive, and will accept only what it constructs for itself. Transhumanism is the ultimate avatar of this movement. Because it is a gift from God, human nature itself becomes unbearable for western man.

This revolt is spiritual at root. It is the revolt of Satan against the gift of grace. Fundamentally, I believe that Western man refuses to be saved by God’s mercy. He refuses to receive salvation, wanting to build it for himself. The “fundamental values” promoted by the UN are based on a rejection of God that I compare with the rich young man in the Gospel. God has looked upon the West and has loved it because it has done wonderful things. He invited it to go further, but the West turned back. It preferred the kind of riches that it owed only to itself.

Africa and Asia are not yet entirely contaminated by gender ideology, transhumanism, or the hatred of fatherhood. But the Western powers’ neo-colonialist spirit and will to dominate pressures countries to adopt these deadly ideologies.
