St Michaels Lutheran School Term 1 Week 10 Devoon This week our SLC students have been creavely filming a series of short films based on the events of the Easter Story. They have read the story, scripted it and, using the green screen, created a wonderful representaon of the message of Easter. Families will get to see these short films when we share them on Facebook over the Easter weekend. The story of Easter is filled with high drama, hope, despair, violence and love. Far from the prey, clean and romancised accounts we usually see, the real crucifixion story more likely mirrored the graphic detail as depicted in Mel Gibsons Passionmovie from a few years ago. I remember leaving the movie theatre aſter seeing that film, numbed and made speechless by the brutality of witnessing a crucifixion on the big screen. Imagining what Jesus went through over those few days of Easter is hard for us to do. But, considering the raw suffering allows us to know the depth of love that Jesus had for people. And even more, the faithfulness Jesus showed to his Fathers will. Throughout the bible God uses people to do the great things he needs done. In most cases, those people are weak, flawed and disobedient. In their weakness we see the mighty work of God who makes things right despite human failing. But God did not trust this most important acon (salvaon) to a human person. Instead, God sent his own Son to do the hard work. In sending Jesus to overcome sin, God showed people how much they were worth to him. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” (John 3:16) It is impossible for our humanness to comprehend that depth of love, but every year Easter gives us an opportunity to try. Wishing all of our families a safe and blessed Easter. They have read the story, scripted it and, using the green screen, created a wonderful representation of the message of Easter. The story of Easter is filled with high drama, hope, despair, violence and love. I remember leaving the movie theatre after seeing that film, numbed and made speechless by the brutality of witnessing a crucifixion on the big screen. Mother’s Day Breakfast and Worship Mothers of St Michael’s students are invited to attend a ‘mums only’ breakfast on Friday May 7th from 8am – 9am in Bukatila. This will be followed by a special worship service in Bukatila which you are also welcome to attend with your child. There will be playground supervision from 8am, so your children can play until school begins, while you enjoy breakfast with other mothers of St Michael’s. Please register your attendance via this link by Monday 3rd May.

‘Word of Mouth’ reward program We believe that St Michael’s is a great school with a wonderful community and we highly value the support of our families. We also know that positive word of mouth from our current families is our strongest asset when it comes to school promotion. When people visit our school, they often tell us that the reason they are considering St Michael’s for the education of their children is because they have heard good things from a friend or colleague. To reward and thank our families for their positive word of mouth, we are running a referral rewards program throughout Term 2. Do you have a friend who is thinking about sending their child to St Michael’s, but has not yet made the move? If a friend names you as the person who referred them to us, and they complete a Principal’s tour, and have paid their confirmation of enrolment at St Michael’s between April 1st and August 1st 2021, we will reimburse to you a term’s fees for one child, as a way to say thank you. In addition, we will give a new St Michael’s school bag to each new child who enrols through your referral. This incentive is for currently enrolled families only, to thank you for your ongoing support of our school and community through word of mouth referrals. For terms and conditions, please contact the Principal or Business Manager.

Parents Welcome Back to Assembly and Chapel From Easter Tuesday, parents can once again join us at Assembly and Chapel services. The recent easing of restrictions in SA mean that there is now enough capacity in the worship centre to allow parents to stay for school events. St Michael’s Church have advised us that we are able to invite parents to attend worship from next week, so, you are invited to join us for our Easter Resurrection service at 9.30am in the Worship Centre on April 6th. Assemblies will continue to be live streamed so you can choose to view online or attend in person.

Playing our part to build a national picture of child health In early 2021, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC). The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families. Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the cen-sus. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children. Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual chil-dren and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for, and developing class programs. Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census. To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au. Foundation families will receive further information soon. If you have any questions, you can contact Terri Taylor, Principal

Teacher Professional Learning The St Michael’s teaching staff have a mindset of continual improvement. The school has a Professional Learning Frame-work which has been developed to support practices leading to ongoing teacher improvement. John Hattie’s Visible Learning effect size research (2009) provided ground breaking insight into the effect of certain teach-ing strategies on learning. We know that the better our teachers use these strategies, the greater the positive effect on learning for our students. Teaching can often be a solitary activity which is why, at St Michael’s, we take a team approach to planning and teaching. To support this team approach, each term in 2021 our teachers will be involved in a Peer Observation Day. Teachers will have the opportunity to observe and give feedback to another teacher on staff and they will also be observed by a teach-ing peer. The Term 1 Peer Observation and follow up reflection provided staff with many insights for the observer and observe. Some follow up comments from staff on the experience included: “It was great to visit someone else’s workspace and to reflect on my own practices after observing them” “I gained ideas for differentiation which I have now used with my own class” “Having someone watch me teach made me think carefully about the lesson structure and provided some excellent feed-back on the strategies I was using”.

Reconciliation Action Plan (R.A.P) The St Michael’s Reconciliation Action Plan has been officially approved by Narragunnawali and is now registered offi-cially. Our vision for reconciliation states:

We believe in a reconciled Australia, where all Australians have a great sense of pride in Aborig-

inal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ histories and cultures. We believe these cultures are an

integral part of who we are as Australians.

We commit to respecting the wisdom and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peo-

ples, so present and future generations can be enriched by the sharing of this knowledge of the

Land, the Seas, the Sky and the Waterways and the Lore that connects them all.

We recognise that to achieve a reconciled Australia we need to build strong authentic relation-

ships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in particular with the Peramangk peoples

who are the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which we learn.

We also acknowledge our neighbouring language groups and the connection they have had

and continue to have on Peramangk Country.

In coming weeks, we will continue to share aspects of our R.A.P with you.

Transdisciplinary Themes & Central Ideas

There is a lot of lingo around an IB school! Let me try to demystify some of the terms you’ll see around the

school and on the report cards.

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, our curriculum is organised under six transdisciplinary themes.

They include: Who we are, Where we are in place and time, How we express ourselves, How the world

works, How we organise ourselves and Sharing the planet. These are universal in IB schools around the world. Being

transdisciplinary means that learning can move across subject areas and also connects to the real world.

Teachers then use these themes to create central ideas. Central ideas are meant to be an enduring understanding; one

that can apply to humans anywhere.

Here are some central ideas that will be explored this year in our school:

BLC - We have a responsibility to care for animals in our environment.

JLC - Many products go through a process of change before they are consumed or used.

MLC - Advertising attempts to influence the way people think and act.

SLC - Government systems influence the lives of citizens.

These units of inquiry and their central ideas are articulated and reported upon on our student report cards. If you want

to know more about the International Baccalaureate program, go to their website www.ibo.org or ask me.

Bike Ed

This term the MLC have been learning about bike safety with Bike Ed. On Tuesday week 3 we brought our

bikes to school or borrowed one, each class got split into a different timetable and got split into 3 groups.

• Bike Safety Checklist (ABC Checklist)

• Where to go at different times on roads

• Continuing roads and ending roads

• How fast to go on roads

ABC Checklist

A is for air, put the palm of your hand on the bike’s tyre and push to see if there is enough air to ride.

B is for brakes, hold the brakes and push the bike forward, if it keeps going then it is not safe to go on the road.

C is for chain, ride your bike for a few seconds, if it doesn’t go anywhere, your chain is broken.

D is for drop test, to ensure your bike is safe fore the road you need to do a drop test, lift your bike up 30 cm off

the ground, then drop your bike, if there is any jingling sound your bike is not safe for the road.

H is for helmet, put your helmet on and check if it is tight enough. There must be 2 fingers between your eyebrows

and helmet, around the ear make sure that 2

finger between your chin and the strap.

L is for laces, make sure your laces are tied up before riding your bike.

Also signal before turning (left or right) so cars know where you’re going. Continuing roads and ending roads

is like a T shaped road, the top bit of the T is a continuing road and the bottom of the T is the ending road because

it ends at the continuing road.

Be safe when riding!

COVID Safe Check-in As directed by the Minister for Education, schools will soon be required to provide COVID Check-in QR codes to be used by all people entering any school buildings. We have been advised that these will be rolled out to schools in the next 2 weeks. Once established, all adults who come into school buildings will need to do a COVID QR check in or sign a COVID check in form which will be located in central areas. Please note though; if you are visiting the school during school hours you will still need to sign in to the school via our normal processes.

Kiss and Drop Our Kiss and Drop zone is used in the afternoon. On most days this area is double staffed by our teachers to ensure that the line moves as quickly as possible. To assist each other and our staff please remember:

• Do not block driveways (and do not drive around cars that are waiting in line and not blocking driveways)

• Do not double park

• Use your family name label (it really helps us!) NEW families will receive their family label very soon. It is a small, 15 minute window of pressure and we ask drivers to be patient with each other for the safety of our children. Thank you for your help.
