Dear St. Michael’s family,

It has been a blessing to see so many families showing back up to Mass over the summer!

But at the same time, it’s been tough trying to figure out what “the new normal” is at the parish, and that largely is because the

uncertainty we face in regards to covid in the upcoming months.

It’s hard to know what to plan for when there is news coming out about new lockdowns in China, mask mandates seem to be re-

turning, and now there are questions about the ongoing effectiveness of the covid vaccine.

I know I’m not the only person who feels like life in the past year has felt a lot like being stuck inside a pinball machine – one week

we are told we are supposed to do one thing, then we are told we can do another, and then we have to go back to how it was be-

fore, et cetera.

I don’t foresee public Mass cancellation again, and my hope is that we are able to avoid any new restrictions, but I am wondering

what might happen regarding regulation of crowd size, singing, the sign of peace, and the like.

So if it seems like we have been lagging in getting back to “normal” on certain things, we definitely have, since I don’t feel inclined

to invest a lot of time in anything that might have to change drastically again within a few weeks. So I ask once again for your con-

tinued patience. I hope that by mid-autumn we will have a trajectory and a plan to be able to do some good training and sort

through all the questions that are still out there with some finality

And at the same time, there have been lots of projects to focus our attention over these past few months.

One of the big ones has been moving the rectory. I moved into the new rectory about three weeks ago, and I love it! I have already

been able to have several parish group dinners and hosted priests in the guest bedrooms for multiple nights. I think I have had

more parishioners over in the past three weeks than in the previous two years in the other house, which is exactly one of the major

reasons I wanted to make the change – it is a great space for hospitality!

Earlier this week I sent a letter asking Archbishop Etienne for permission to repose the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel, and I have

asked Fr. Hans Olson, who is a talented woodworker, to draw up some plans for an altar down there. Even without the presence of

the Blessed Sacrament, it’s been nice to have a dedicated chapel space, so that during my morning prayer time I wasn’t having to

try to stay focused as the seminarians were passing back and forth by the living room during their morning routine, like we were

doing in the other house.

There is still a bit of work to be done, and this is also a chance to make sure we have what we need so that we don’t need to make

any major purchases for the next 10, 20, 30 years or more.

We have already gotten a lot of the furniture figured out (thank you to everyone who has helped with that!), but there are still a

number of big and small items that we need.

Ann Greene helped us put together a list of items that harmonize with what we already have. She’s been an amazing designer, and

we could not have made this nearly as good without her help!

If you’re interested in helping furnish the rectory, you can find the list of items here.

If you want to be a part of this project, please let our Pastoral Assistant for Administration know (Michelle Green) what you are

planning to purchase to avoid duplicates. You can also donate gift cards for Wayfair, Target, Costco, Home Goods, Amazon, or any

other major outlet, and we will put them to good use!

All shipping should be directed to the parish, in the care of Michelle Green:

I have also written in past letters about my desire to develop a healthy youth ministry here at St. Michael’s. I am grateful for all

those who have accepted the invitation to step up and be part of the team for this year! We will be doing a kick-off at the end of

next week (August 28, 3pm) with a field day for the teens. During the year we will be hosting Fidelis for girls, and are in the pro-

cess of developing a team for its brother program, Fraternus, for boys. Our hope is to be able to also periodically host events

and activities for both groups throughout the year, which would also be open to outsiders.

Fidelis and Fraternus will be meeting on Thursday nights from 6:30-8:30pm starting on September 2nd for Fidelis (Fraternus

might start a little later), keep your eyes out for registration happening soon!

Next month we are also looking to restart Family Faith Formation, First Communion preparation. Please contact our PA for Faith

Formation, Christina Dyer, for any questions about those.

We are also hosting the Called and Gifted Workshop, led by Sherry Waddell, on September 25th. Please register today here! The

workshop is free of charge, and I think will help you to think about your life in a positive new way!

Our Men’s Group is also preparing to start “That Man is You!”, beginning on September 23rd at 5:30am, and taking place every

Thursday morning. If you feel like maybe the Lord is calling you to take another step and learn more about your faith or try to

live it out in a new way, please come!

A group of parishioners from our Spanish Mass have asked to have all-night adoration once a month, on the first Saturday, every

month. So on the first weekend of the month, you can now come to the church to pray from 9am on Friday until 6am on Satur-

day. Please spend some time with Jesus in adoration of His Blessed Sacrament!

I also want to make a special invite to the women of the parish to attend the “Undone” conference at Mary, Queen of Peace parish in Sammamish, September 9-11. It’s put on by the John Paul II Healing Center, which has helped me greatly in my own need for healing over the past several years. I highly recommend it, and I will be supporting it by going to hear confessions there on both the Friday and Saturday of the conference. You can register for it here. The women on our parish staff will be attending, and if anyone wants to carpool from St. Michael’s, just let us know you are registered to coordinate.

You probably won’t see me much during the week for the last several days of August, as I am having a minor procedure which,

though small and not dangerous in any way, may keep me from being able to do much work for a few days; but about the time I

should be back on my feet, I will be taking a few days of vacation with a priest friend of mine and going to Alaska. The plane tick-

ets are a gift from a family friend for my ordination five years ago, and I haven’t found the right time to take them up on the

offer until now! Not sure what we will be doing yet, but sounds like there is a possibility for some salmon fishing!

There are good things happening here at St. Michael, and I ask you all to continue to keep all our ministries in your prayer. All

good things only come through the hands of the Lord, and so let’s continue to thank Him and ask Him for everything we have

and need!

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Michael

Faith Formation Updates

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) and Adult Confirmation

Catholicism is a way of life, and becoming Catholic is a journey in faith. RCIA

is a process rooted in Church history designed to educate and prepare

adults to receive the sacraments of the Church. Becoming Catholic involves

entering into a relationship with Jesus Christ and His community of God’s

people. We believe that you will enjoy a deeper relationship with God as you

become acquainted with members of St. Michael and the Church throughout

the world. Your RCIA journey will be a unique time for you. You will no doubt

notice how your own life experiences and beliefs have brought you to this

point as you listen to God’s invitation to explore the Catholic faith.

Who is RCIA for?

+ Adults and youth over the age of 14 never baptized who desire to become Catholic.

+ Adults and youth over the age of 14 baptized in another Christian church who desire to

join in membership in the Catholic Church.

+ Adults and youth over the age of 14 baptized in the Catholic Church who have not

completed their full initiation into the church through the Sacraments of Eucharist and

Confirmation.

RCIC For Children

RCIC is the process adapted for those unbaptized, ages 8 to 14, who desire to become a Christian

in the Catholic Church. The format follows that of the adult RCIA program, but in a manner adapted

for the understanding and maturation of children.

For more information about RCIA or RCIC, contact Christina Dyer at (360) 568-0821 or

[email protected]

Thank-you to everyone who made our registration for Faith Formation and First Communion Preparation a

success!! The materials have all been ordered and will be here in time to be handed out at the first session.

A Family of Faith’s first meeting is Sunday, September 12 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm.

“It is awesome to me that you have actually found a format to give expression to the process of discerning gifts! Presentation was great!” “For me, the idea that I stand in the place of Jesus in my life, in my encounters with my family, my friends, and my little daughter has been revolutionary. Until now, I’ve thought that I was not worthy to untie Jesus’ sandals. Now it seems I am to put them on and walk as though they fit.” “The workshop clearly called out that all baptized people have been given the power, authority, and jurisdiction to stand in Jesus’ place to reach people who would not otherwise be reached.”
