Aſter refusing to answer their quesons, Jesus tells the parable of the two sons and then cricizes the priests and elders for their lack of belief in John the Bapst. In today's Gospel, Jesus once again speaks to the priests and elders with a parable. In this parable, the landowner leases his vineyard to tenants and sends his servants to collect the poron of the harvest that the tenants owe to him. Several mes the servants are sent to collect payment, and each me they are beaten and killed by the tenants. Finally, the landowner sends his son to collect his rent. The tenants, believing that they will inherit the vineyard if the landowner dies without an heir, plot together and kill the landowner's son. Aſter telling the parable, Jesus quesons the chief priests and elders about what the landowner will do to the wicked tenants. They all agree that the landowner will kill the wicked tenants and give the land to new tenants who will pay the rent. In telling the parable, Jesus is clearly drawing upon Isaiah 5:1-7, which is today's first reading and one that the priests and elders would have known well. Jesus doesn't, therefore, have to explain the symbolism of the parable; the Pharisees would have understood that the vineyard represented Israel, the landowner represented God, the servants represented the prophets, and the bad tenants represented the religious leaders. Yet Jesus nonetheless explains the meaning of the parable for his audience: the Kingdom of God will be taken from the unbelieving and given to the faithful. The chief priests and elders have condemned themselves with their answer to Jesus' queson. This Gospel reminds us of the importance of listening to God's word. God speaks to us in many ways—through Scripture, through our Church tradi- on, in our Church's teaching, and through modern-day prophets. REFLECTION

Today's Gospel follows directly after last Sunday's Gospel in which Jesus was questioned by Jewish religious leaders about the source of his teaching authority. After refusing to answer their questions, Jesus tells the parable of the two sons and then criticizes the priests and elders for their lack of belief in John the Baptist.

In today's Gospel, Jesus once again speaks to the priests and elders with a parable. In this parable, the landowner leases his vineyard to tenants and sends his servants to collect the portion of the harvest that the tenants owe to him. Several times the servants are sent to collect payment, and each time they are beaten and killed by the tenants. Finally, the landowner sends his son to collect his rent. The tenants, believing that they will inherit the vineyard if the landowner dies without an heir, plot together and kill the landowner's son.

After telling the parable, Jesus questions the chief priests and elders about what the landowner will do to the wicked tenants. The chief priests and elders have condemned themselves with their answer to Jesus' question.

This Gospel reminds us of the importance of listening to God's word. God speaks to us in many ways—through Scripture, through our Church tradi-tion, in our Church's teaching, and through modern-day prophets. Are we attentive and receptive to God's word to us through these messengers?

National Committee for Professional Standards

Child Protection Sunday 8th October 2017

“See Me, Hear Me”

As has become the custom each year the Child Protection Sunday and pre-ceding week, provides a focus remind-ing each of us to play a part in pro-

tecting our children. This year our theme is “See Me, Hear Me”. The question is how do we at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, play our part in listening to children to ensure they are kept safe? This year the National Committee for Professional Stand-ards have commissioned a video and brochure through the Australian Catholic University reflecting on research around what children think about their safety. In the first reading for the 10th September, Child Protection Sunday the Prophet Eze-kiel speaks of “being a sentry to the House of Israel’. As already stated within our Catholic Communities there is horror, anger and sorrow over the abuse of children. As Pope Francis out-lined before leading the crowds in the Angelus prayer in March last year it is important to “Listen: this is the key word. Do not forget, listen to the hurt, sick and marginalized, or among fami-lies” As a sentry, each of us plays a part in listening to what the children have to say, making sure that every child is safe and protected from abuse and harm. We can see evidence of the strength of our community providing support, protection and opportunities to help keep our children safe.

OUR PRAYER: “SEE ME HEAR ME”

Gracious God provide us with a listening heart

that we see and hear the voice of each of our

children. We ask you God to strengthen and

guide all in our Catholic communities. Grant

us the ability and time to listen carefully when

children come to us seeking help. May our in-

stitutions and families respect, listen and do

what is required to help all children feel safe.

Help us to recognize the hurt felt by those

wounded initially by abuse then again through

the failure to be heard. We stand in constant

need of your healing and help.
