Dear Parents / Carers

Next week is Book Week at St Matthew’s, and we will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 7th March.

Book Week will kick off on Monday 4th March where we will welcome author Curtis Jobling to our school. Curtis is the designer of worldwide hit children’s television show, ‘Bob the Builder’, and the author and illustrator of numerous children’s books including the Max Hesling series and the Wereworld series. His own animated series, ‘Frankenstein’s Cat’ and ‘Raa Raa the Noisy Lion’, can both be seen on the BBC. Curtis will deliver talks to children in EYFS, KS1 and KS2, and these will cover his work in film, animation and publishing.

Also on Monday, we look forward to welcoming Chorlton Bookshop, who will set up a bookstall in the hall from 3:00-4:00pm. All children will be given a £1 book token, and Chorlton Bookshop will be accepting the tokens to buy the £1 World Book Day books, as well as accepting the £1 token as discount off their other books. This discount applies for all books, except Curtis Jobling’s, which will be sold at a discounted price of £6, and there may be be an opportunity for these books to be signed by Curtis himself! Refreshments and seating will be available for you to enjoy, and share, your new books.

On Thursday 7th March, which is World Book Day, everyone has the opportunity to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. The day will start with an assembly, where the children will be given a chance to parade in their costumes, and prizes will be given for the best costumes across each key stage.

Exciting project to complete at home

All children in KS1 and KS2 will be sent home at the start of a week with a plain craft matchbox (without the striker) and a strip of paper. Their challenge is to fold the paper, and create a tiny picture book to place inside the decorated matchbox. School will tweet an example on Monday, so the children’s task is clear. These are to be brought in by Friday to put into our matchbox library, within our school library. Again, prizes will be awarded for the most creative ‘book in a box’.

Throughout the week, there will be lots of opportunities for the children to celebrate reading, and we are really looking forward to it!

Any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch.
