St Matthews £1 Million! £1 Million to use over the next 10 years to make St Matthews an even better place to live.

We are now three months into the ‘delivery phase’ of our Plan and since our last newsletter in September, St Matthews Big Local Partnership Board has been busy making the Plan become a reality.

We have recently formed two new sub groups :

The Community Group will be looking at - • A Day Trip for elderly residents of St Matthews. • Benches - do we need more places for people to sit? • Litter Bins - would more help to keep the Estate cleaner?

The Environmental Group will be looking at - • CCTV - are there enough cameras or do we need more? • Parking - working with others to plan a strategy. • Road Safety - how can we make our streets safer for

pedestrians and cyclists. • Police Community Meetings - working together to make

St Matthews crime free.

If you'd like to get involved then please contact us.

Business and Social Enterprise support. We are committed to helping support both new and existing businesses in St Matthews.

We have been working with Spring to Action who, in the new year, will be starting to deliver and develop a series of drop-in sessions, workshops, training and networking events for St Matthews businesses. They will be working with existing small businesses and those seeking to start up a new business or social enterprise.

Later on in the year they will be looking to develop a local St Matthews Business Panel to give local businesses a voice.

This is just the start of our plans to support local businesses but some of our plans will take longer to implement.

New Grants Programme for ‘Positive Activities for All Ages’ We have been working with Voluntary Action LeicesterShire to start an exciting new grants programme worth £50,000. The grants are an opportunity for local residents and local voluntary organisations to apply for funding from £100 to £10,000 to provide positive activities in St Matthews that link into to the St Matthews Big Local Plan and vision.

The funding for the 1st Round has closed and cheques will be paid out in December.

The second round of applications worth at least £25,000 will start in May 2015 so keep checking our website for application forms and the dates of free workshops we run to help support your application.

Volunteers needed. Do you have a few hours to spare? Do you care about the community of St Matthews and want to make a real difference? We are looking for dedicated local residents who can help us to make the Plan work. We will give you training when needed and will support you to make a real difference.

We need help in -

• Delivering newsletters and information leaflets. • Surveying local residents to see if they think St Matthews

Big Local is making a difference and what they would like to see in the future.

• Helping at community events such as Parks Day. • Helping at meetings - setting up rooms etc.

Pigeons pests encourage rats Large numbers of feral pigeons are an environmental nuisance and can also cause harm to human health.

Pigeons are not legally classed as vermin and local authorities do not have a specific duty to control pigeons in public places, although most local authorities do carry out some control.

Pigeons can cause many problems including

• fouling pavements making them slippery and dangerous, especially for the elderly.

• nesting in or on properties causing infestation of beetles, mites, flies and cockroaches.

• nesting in gutters, causing clogging and flooding.

• producing corrosive droppings that deface and damage buildings and vehicles.

• spreading disease though exposure to pigeon faeces

Feeding pigeons encourages them to gather in large numbers resulting in nuisance and annoyance. Food left out for pigeons frequently attracts rats.

Please do not feed pigeons in St Matthews.

If you want to feed wild birds, get a bird feeder and give them the right food. Remember, most wild birds are in decline in the UK and need your help much more than pigeons do.

Local Police to hold more local meetings. Residents asked us to promote police meetings -

They will also have a question and answer session.
