PARISH MISSION STATEMENT: The very heart of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church is Jesus Christ present on
the altar. Our mission, born at that altar, is to be sent forth into our neighborhood in
order to build up the Kingdom of God. The labor of this effort must address in deed
more than in word the needs of our people.

Reflection: Our reading from the book of
Exodus recalls the wandering journey of
Moses and Zipporah in the dessert. At first,
the people were pleased to be freed from the
Egyptians. But they began to complain that
God was not caring for them. Do I see the
blessings of God in my life, or do I complain
about the places I note His absence?
Psalm 95
If today you hear his voice,
harden not your hearts.
Reading II
Romans 5: 1-2, 5-8
The love of God has been poured into
our hearts through the Holy Spirit
that has been given to us.
Reflection: St. Paul asks the Romans to boast
in the hope of the glory of God. The love of
God is poured into our hearts. The spirit of
God is given to us. We know that our Savior
has offered his life for us. Is my faith in God
seen by the way I live my life?
Gospel
John 4: 5-42
The water that I shall give will
become a spring of eternal life.
Reflection: The passage from John’s gospel is
another journey, taking us inward: into the
center of our being. On His way to Jerusalem,
Jesus stops at a well in a Samaritan town. We
witness His incredible encounter with this
woman. He knows her and her desires. She
discovers in Jesus the spirit and truth. Am I
discovering Jesus on my Lenten journey?
Anima Christi
Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within your wounds, hide me.
Permit me not to be separated from you.
From the wicked enemy defend me.
At the hour of my death call me,
bid me come to your side, that with your
saints I may praise you forever and ever.
Amen
Bible Study will be Tuesday, March 10th at
6 pm in the Rectory Library. We are reading

PASTOR’S CORNER
Lent has begun. We continue on this
journey together. Can I take advantage of
the Lenten events by joining others at
special devotions, prayers, fish fries, public
talks or doing good works? We list some of
the offerings in our neighboring parishes in
the North City Deanery.
Our Lenten journey also sheds light on
the daily journeys we each are living.
During this presidential election year,
are we aware of how to help everyone
find their voices through the power of
voting rights? Growing gun violence
shocks our community, are we aware of
how to support the advocates and police
in creating safer environments in the city
and our neighborhoods? Blowing winds,
weather patterns and natural disasters,
and the flu and the spreading of the
coronavirus effects us, are we prepared
to respond quickly to help family and
neighbors with unexpected disasters?
Both Archbishop Carlson and Pope
Francis offered Lenten reflections to all
Catholics. Am I forming my own Lenten
reflection on how I wish to better live
out my love of Jesus.
Our Lenten journey is a time to deepen
in prayer, encourage abstinence and
fasting, and engage in almsgiving and
good deeds. May this year’s Lenten
journey together help each of us respond
generously to the love of Jesus.

PPC Meeting Summary
March 1, 2020
Our Parish Pastoral Council met last Sunday to review the election results as well as assign
newly elected members to their roles for the Council. Members discussed the Future of Parishes
Meeting and preparation for the upcoming Special Assembly. Members were given updates on
the major projects for the Parish.
The Council Members along with the Parish Life Coordinator thank the parish for its
recommendations for new Council members. The Council reviewed the results and recommended
assignments based on needs and skills. Our recommended new members are Martha Buck
(Secretary), Myles McCabe (Administration & Finance) and Jerry Hall (Spiritual Life &
Worship). The new members will join Sheryl Williams (Chair), Trevor Green (Vice-chair), Jim
Hauschultz (Christian Formation), Léna Jackson (Parish Life), and Joe Monahan (Social
Concerns) as of June 1, for a 2.5 year term. An opportunity will be planned to thank our outgoing
members and to bless our new Parish Pastoral Council.
The Future of Parishes held a meeting on Sunday, February 9. The Task Force presented the
new path forward to get to its final step: 1) each parish is asked to complete another Parish
Summary Report after hosting an assembly to collect input from parishioners, 2) a subgroup of
the Task Force will extract content from the parish reports and write a final report, and 3) the
final report will be submitted to the Archdiocese on behalf of the Task Force. A Task Force Core
team was identified to address future movements/ plans/ concerns and reconvene a larger group
if needed.
Next Sunday Conversation on March 15 is a special assembly hosted by the PPC. The Special
Assembly will speak about both the State of the Parish Survey information and the Future of
Parish summary report. Parish involvement is necessary to complete the summary report and
to develop strategic plans for our parish.
The contract for tuck-pointing the Church has been signed. The heating and cooling unit at the
Family Center has been replaced. The water / sewer issue is being worked on. Gutter and
plastering work will be needed, when the tuck-pointing is completed. The Parish received a grant
from the Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) and the Jesuits for these capital
improvement costs.
PPC Commissions Reports:
Laetare Sunday, March 22 will include the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
The current Family Center lease concludes July 31st. The Parish needs to find a new
tenant or absorb the loss of income for the next year’s budget.
