It is with delight that we will wel-come Bishop Justice home to live here in residence at Saint Mat-thew's Parish on August 1st. We welcome him "home" not only be-

cause he will be making his home here during the week, but because he has such a long personal history in the Parish and School already. Although Bishop was born in Massachusetts, his parents brought him here to live in the Parish as a very young child at the end of World War II. He is a St Matthew School Alumnus, having completed the first few years of his education here and receiving his First Holy Communion in the old Church downtown. After his parents found a new home in St Gregory's parish, where he finished a questionable grammar school education and went on to Serra, Bishop Justice has at least one more intimate connection to St Matthew's - He was ordained a Priest here in the new Church building during the 1960's (Continued on page 2)

Casa Obispo Justicia” Es un placer darle la bienvenida a casa al Obispo Justicia. Nuestra parroquia de St. Matthew será su casa de residencia a partir del 1ero. de Agosto. Le damos la bienvenida a “su ca-

sa” no solo porque este será su hogar durante la semana, sino porque tiene una larga historia personal tanto en la parroquia como en la escuela. Aunque el Obispo Justicia nació en Massachusetts, sus padres lo trajeron a vivir aquí cuando era un niño muy pequeño a finales de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Es un ex-alumno de la escuela de St. Matthew, aquí completó sus primeros años su educación y recibió su Primera Comunión en la Iglesia Antigua entonces ubicada en el centro de la ciudad. Después sus padres encontraron una casa la cual por su ubicación pasarían a pertenecer a la parroquia de San Gregorio donde el terminó su educación primaria y secun-daria para después ir a la preparatoria Serra, El Obispo Justicia tiene por lo menos una mas intima cone-xión con St. Matthew pues fue ordenado Sacerdote aquí en este nuevo edificio durante la década de los 60’ des-pués de que la Antigua Catedral de Santa María se in-cendiara, y antes de que la nueva Catedral fuera termi-nada. En lo personal estoy muy contento de que el y yo vaya-mos a ser compañeros nuevamente. Tuvimos el placer de vivir en la rectoría de la Catedral por algunos años antes de mi asignación del 1ero. de enero aquí en St. Matthew. after the Old St Mary's Cathedral had burned down , but before the new Cathedral was completed. On a personal note, I am delighted that he and I will be roommates again. We had the pleasure of living at the Cathedral rectory together for a number of years before my assignment here to St Matthew's on Janu-ary 1st. Although we're a bit of an Odd Couple, he obviously misses me so much that he is following me here just six months later. (I will let all of you figure out just which of us might be the Oscar and which might be the Felix.).

Please join me in welcoming Bishop Justice back to his home Parish next Weekend. He'll will be celebrating the 10:45am Mass on Sunday, August 2nd. Come see just what the kindest man alive actually looks like!

"Spring Cleaning in Summer?" As we try to make the Church and vestibules as welcom-ing as we can, any information about the two church mod-els pushed to side of the northeast vestibule would be greatly appreciated. Because the parish facilities provide so little storage space, such things have been left to pile up in the entry ways, where people should immediately be able to recognize a sacred and welcoming space. Since there is NOWHERE else to store these models properly, it would be helpful to know if anyone values them enough to take them home with you! We're planning to start the long overdue clean up in August, so be sure to let us know right away. Msgr. Talesfore

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Our Gospel reading from St. John relates to the account of Jesus feeding the more than 5,000 gathered to be fed by the Word, little knowing they would be fed in reality owing to one of the Lord's best known miracles. This phenomenal narrative is reported in all four Gospels.

In many ways what Je-sus did in this particular mir-acle is different from others He performed. He makes an effort to involve the Apos-tles by turning to them and appealing for assistance. Of course, there is some hesitancy on the parts of Philip and Andrew who are cited as responding in some-what negative ways. Jesus does not admonish them for their misgivings but goes ahead to accomplish what

He set out to do. Certainly the Apostles

had witnessed previous in-credible acts by the Lord, but yet they still hesitated to trust Him implicitly. How of-ten do we do the same? Do we remember the many blessings we have received, and do we think of all the ways God has been with us in the past, or do we, like Philip and Andrew, doubt? Stewardship involves com-plete trust in God. This trust should be based as much as what has happened in our lives, as on our deep faith. Good stewards concentrate on the positive, not on the negative. When one focuses on blessings rather than challenges, miracles like this seen commonplace.

Summer Stewardship For most of us, July is the heart of a warm, languid summer. It’s vacation time for many, time to fire up the grill or skip out to the swimming pool, weekends away, golfing. We shed those heavy clothes in favor of hot weather informality (except if you’re heading off to Scotland!!) Even our reading material changes with the heat and the light: that heavy biography becomes an easy-on-the-beach thriller. So it’s probably true that our approach to stewardship changes with the seasons as well – it changes but doesn’t disappear. In fact, July can be a wonderful time to reexamine our own attitude towards our faith and our stewardship commitments. Sunday mass is still as important as ever. But we are freer in the summer, try different Mass times, visit a neighboring parish, or experience a new parish while on vacation. Get out of your “pew” and experience the Church from a different perspective. But remember that summer offers our parish no respite from its bills. Our parish needs consistent commitment of support. St. Matthew offers electronic giving. Signing up for this efficient means of contributing not only ensures that we continue to give dependably during the summer, it helps our parish to budget throughout the year. This process only takes a few minutes and will allow you to enjoy your vacation without worrying if the church’s electric bill will be taken care of in your absence. The summer months often brings a break in other parish commitments. The faith formation class you enthusiastically teach all winter takes the summer off. Your committee has decided to meet in late August. July is a great time to reflect on those commitments. How does it feel, taking a break? Do you look forward to picking up your role in the fall? The summer gives you a good time to reassess and reenergize for the next chance to say “yes!” For Christian stewards, there’s no summer “vacation” from nurturing their spiritual lives. But there are plenty of opportunities to explore prayer, giving, and parish involvement in new ways.
