St. Mary’s Church
Remembrance Day Service
10.45 a.m. Sunday 10th November
2 Minutes Silence will be observed at 11.00 a.m.
Poppies were first suggested as a symbol of Remembrance in 1918.
In 1921 the British Legion adopted it and the first Poppy Appeal was born.
The first appeal raised £106,000 (nearly £30 million in today's terms) and all
the poppies were supplied from France. In 1922 the "Poppy Factory" was
established in the UK to keep costs down and employed disabled ex-
Servicemen to make the poppies
This year, the Legion is focusing on the range of work it does to support
Armed Forces families, whether they are families of personnel on active
service, or those currently in transition from military to civilian life, or of
veterans.
With acknowledgements to the British Legion

WRAWBY PRE-SCHOOL
Thanks to everyone who has voted for the pre-school to win the £3,000 from Lloyds Bank Community fund as detailed in last month's Wrawby News. You can still vote in the branch and you don't need to be a Lloyds customer to do so. The result will be announced in next month's Wrawby News.
Many thanks also to the villagers that have purchased a brick for the new building. This is an on-going scheme and a brick can be purchased for as little as £5. Please ring Kate Prior on 650209 if you would like to support the Pre-school in this way. Alternatively, bricks will be on sale at the Make and Sale fair on 16th November.
There was a great turnout for the Indian cookery demonstration and flower-arranging evening, which raised £241 and the first of the monthly coffee mornings, which raised just under £100. Many thanks to Maria for her generosity in time and effort.
The next coffee morning will be in the village hall on Wed 6th November at 9.30 - 11.30am. There will also be a pudding club on Sunday 17th No-vember at 8pm in the Village Hall. Bring a small pudding of your choice and a beverage (tea and coffee supplied). The cost is £5 per head and all profits will go to the Pre-school.

Your Park STILL Needs YOU!!
A quick update on how our fund raising efforts are going..
Firstly I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has given their time or made a donation to Wrawby Playing Fields Association (Charity No. 525149) so far.
We have managed to raise enough to repaint the equipment, which we are doing bit by bit; replace the baby swings and buy a new climbing rope and log for the large mulit-play.
Our fund raising efforts are continuing with a Christmas Craft Fayre on 10
th November, 10am til 2pm in the Village
Hall. See below.
We are now looking for tombola/raffle prizes. These can be dropped off at my house – The Spell, Tunnel Road, or if you let Postie Sue know we will collect in person.
Any cakes for the cake stall would also be much appreciated. Again, these can be dropped off either at my house or at the village hall on the day.
We hope that the village will come out and support us on the 10
th November to raise as much money AND have as
much fun as possible!!!
We look forward to seeing you all there…..
Thank you again for your continued support. Angela

T here’s lots in the news at the moment on the issue of food waste. In our harvest festival
service in Church at the beginning of October, we thanked God for His wonderful provision
for us and for the amazing variety of different foods that we can choose from. We also
thought about some of the staggering figures that reflect the world’s food waste – and a
couple of them have been haunting me since. On average, in the UK, one fifth of our weekly shop ends
up in the bin. As this is an average, it means there will be some households that throw little away, but
some that throw a great deal away. How much do you throw away, dear reader? Another scary statistic
is that in the UK we reject between 20 and 40% of our fruit and veg because they are “ugly” – not
pleasing to the eye. Thankfully, that figure is falling as more people are accepting that it’s the taste
that’s important, not the looks- and nobbly potatoes taste just as good as non-nobbly ones! All this
makes me wonder about food waste in our house, and I have to admit to being far from perfect on this
front. In my defence though, my children have been overheard saying “we can sleep well tonight,
Mother has just put 2 small boiled potatoes in a ramekin dish in the fridge”. Sometimes these 2 small
boiled potatoes make their way into a soup a day or 2 later, but sometimes, Jim politely asks if he can
throw them ( and the other one that’s joined them) out a week later. Does anyone reading also have a
few left-overs in the fridge in a small ramekin dish?
I’m sure many of you will have heard the saying “nothing was wasted from a pig apart from its squeal” –
and maybe it’s time we got back to basics and looked to the way our grandparents operated. I have no
memory whatsoever of my Nana ever throwing anything away after meals. Any veg or potatoes would be
served up as “bubble and squeak” the following day. And there was never any meat bought above and
beyond what the needs of the week’s menu demanded. I can’t remember my mum throwing anything
away either. Even though I was quite a picky eater as a child, I don’t remember leftovers making it
past the dog’s dish, and she was a small dog, so there can’t have been that much. But what is really sad
in all this, is that whilst the west wastes so much, there are still those who go hungry, and it doesn’t
have to be like this. I’m still unsure of just what part you and I, dear reader play in all this, but just
imagine if people only bought what they could eat, how much would we save? And just imagine what we
could do with the money that we saved? We could give a little of it to charities that work to feed
those who are starving. And less waste would be good for our country too, saving money and recycling
costs. And maybe I would be a little thinner, and someone who is starving would be a little fuller, and
we would both be happier. Is it really as simple as this? We’ll never know until we try!
Maybe I need to go and buy some more ramekin dishes. Kate Marr
