March 4th,Third Sunday of Lent Marzo 4 Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma

Dear Parishioners,

This last week I took my turn with the flu. This is the second Lent in row that this has happened. Just re-

flecting on it, it is amazing how easy my Lenten promises are compared to having the flu. I have tried

very hard to offer it up as sacrifice for people I know that need the prayers, but I have failed many times.

As I give in to lamenting my situation or feeling sorry for myself I feel like I have a new appreciation for

the apostles when Jesus was arrested. They would have done anything to have gotten out of that situa-

tion. The one word that keeps coming back to me is, “surrender”, and let God work.

Blessings,

Fr. Peter

Queridos Parroquianos,

Bendiciones, P. Peter

Quote of the Week _________________________________________________________________

“The practice of fasting is very present in the first Christian community (cf. Acts 13,3; 14,22; 27,21; 2 Cor 6,5). The Church Fathers, too, speak of the force of fasting to bridle sin, es-pecially the lusts of the “old Adam,” and open in the heart of the believer a path to God. Moreover, fasting is a practice that is encoun-tered frequently and recommended by the saints of every age. Saint Peter Chrysologus writes: “Fasting is the soul of prayer, mercy is the lifeblood of fasting. So if you pray, fast; if you fast, show mercy; if you want your petition to be heard, hear the petition of others. If you do not close your ear to others, you open God’s ear to yourself”. In our own day, fasting seems to have lost

something of its spiritual meaning, and has taken on, in a culture characterized by the search for material well-being, a therapeutic value for the care of one’s body. Fasting certain-ly bring benefits to physical well-being, but for believers, it is, in the first place, a “therapy” to heal all that prevents them from conformity to the will of God.” -Pope Benedict XVI, Lenten Message 2009

DISCIPLESHIP, AND EVANGELIZATION

Learning and Living the Faith

________________________________________________________________

Q: Is fasting necessary?

A: It is a mark of our times that many Christians do not believe that discipline of our good but earthly desires is not necessary for living a Christian life. In the early Church, the view was quite different; the Didache, which was written in the first century, possibly even before the Gospels, says that Wednesday and Friday were established as days of fasting. Jesus says in the Gospel of Matthew, “When you fast…”, not, “If you fast…” (cf. Mt 6:16) It is true that fasting from food may not be particularly helpful for some people (if you have a disease or disorder which would make fasting not just difficult but actually bad for you), but as-cetic discipline in some manner, even if not in food, is neces-sary for the Christian life. Even those who cannot physically fast could have a simpler meal, or no seasonings, or similar. The spiritual writers are unanimous in affirming that the things of this world can, when used wrongly or in the wrong way or in the way proportions, blind us to the reality of the spiritual, and even eventually to the reality of God. Fasting teaches us the correct usage of even good things, and helps us to put our rela-tionship with the Lord above those desires, and to live out re-pentance for our sins by denying our own will for love of God and neighbor.
