1 St Mary’s NEWSLETTER W elcome to the 2018 Summer Edition of St Mary’s Newsletter. This published edition can also be accessed through our Website and our School App. If you haven’t already done so why not download our App and link in to our Twitter account, both of which are packed with daily notifications and news items that are of interest to the whole school community and which will keep you up to date, as does this newsletter, with the many academic, sporting, cultural, religious, musical, artistic and dramatic highlights of our school year. It has been another sensational year for sport in St Mary’s with teams reaching the finals in Hockey, Basketball and of course Camogie. Our senior and junior Hockey teams once again made it to the finals of the Northside League and fought hard to retain their titles, only losing out at the last minute and in deplorable weather conditions during the penalty shoot outs. Our 2nd Division 1 Basketball team claimed the North Dublin title at the finals in the National Basketball Arena in April and one of our TY students represented us proudly at the All Ireland Final of the Schools’ Cross Country in the WIT Arena. There have been considerable accomplishments in Soccer, Gaelic Football, Volleyball, Tennis and Table Tennis and while we wish all our teams continued success going forward I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate especially our Camogie teams and their coaches who have truly put us on the map by bringing home three Dublin titles at senior, junior and minor level. We are so proud of this amazing achievement and grateful to the coaches for their unstinting dedication to and belief in their teams – which culminated in each player receiving a Dublin medal for their great efforts this season! Our TY Programme has once again been jam-packed as you will gather from the many reports to follow. Our students excelled in the DCU UniTY Multimedia Awards in the Helix taking home the awards in three of the six categories. TY students were also involved in the Wheelchair Basketball initiative, Self- Defence, Circus Skills and Rowing and they represented the school in the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS and in the PExpo where they brought home the title in the Psychology of Sport senior category. They reached the regional finals of Junk Kouture, won the overall award at the Business Bootcamp in Coláiste Eoin and nearly all achieved Bronze Gaisce medals. There have been too many activities and events to list them all but we were particularly proud on the 17th May when a group of our TYs represented us in Áras an Uachtaráin at the Ceremony of the Presentation of Credentials by new Ambassadors to our President, Mr Michael D Higgins. Our TY Programme continues to go from strength to strength and we are very appreciative of the work that goes into making it so vibrant and flourishing. The cultural dimension of our school continues to thrive. Creative engagement opportunities abound for all students. You will see the wonderful Mask-Making project undertaken by second years which was showcased alongside the immense musical talent of our students at the annual Musical Showcase in May. Engagement with practicing artists is a hallmark of our programme and fifth year Art students worked with Eleanor Phillips to produce pieces of art making cross- curricular links with other leaving cert subjects, while the Architects in Schools Initiative under the guidance of Evelyn D’arcy culminated this year in a proposal from collaborators in DIT to create an outdoor pavilion for students as a meeting and eating space. We are truly grateful to Sima and her talented crew for this great opportunity. Our Schola Choir once again excelled at the Navan Choral Festival in May where they competed to a very high standard and were highly commended by the adjudicators for their outstanding performances. In the cultural arena the list goes on with notable achievements in Debating, Public Speaking, Drama, Mosaics and film making to name but a few. Wellbeing is at the core of everything we do in the curricular and extra-curricular pursuit of the ideals of our Mission Statement. We are committed to actively encourage sustainability as evidenced by the ongoing work of our Green Schools committee, our newer Biodiversity team and our involvement in the Get Up And Goals Programme. Our Amber team which is committed to the promotion of positive mental health was presented with the school’s first ever Amber flag at a ceremony in Ballincollig in May. This team worked hard to create awareness through their fundraiser and Amber Day for Pieta House and by participating in the Darkness Into Light event when a group of 30 teachers and students joined another 200,000 supporters outside the Phoenix Park to walk the annual DIL 5km. The Ember Team continues to be a beacon of light throughout the year contributing in a very special way to the spiritual calendar, and it was very gratifying at their Graduation Ceremony to watch the sixth-year team handing over the torch of faith development to our incoming team – igniting the spark that will continue to burn bright throughout the coming academic year. With extra-curricular activities flourishing due to the selfless commitment of teachers in their own time, it is gratifying and inspiring to witness the high standards of teaching and learning that continue to be the distinguishing feature of the academic life of St Mary’s. In this context we are very happy to be one of the first forty schools in the country to offer Politics and Society as part of our senior cycle curriculum, and this exciting and innovative new subject will be examined for the first time in the Leaving Certificate in June 2018. We wish our budding politicians the very best of luck as they demonstrate a range of new skills that they have embraced and developed over the course of the last two years. Our first years have settled in well and are now ready to greet our new incoming first years and to support them as they were supported with the genuine warmth of the St Mary’s welcome. As we look forward to the arrival of our new cohort I would like to bid a fond farewell to our sixth years who graduated on 22nd May. You are a talented and creative bunch of young people and I hope sincerely that you all achieve your academic and personal goals, and I wish you happiness and health as you go forward. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the school community – Board of Management, staff, students and parents – for the continued support, encouragement and commitment to St Mary’s that sustains our community, and on behalf of myself, Ms O’Donnell, Ms Devaney and all the staff, I would like to wish our third and sixth years the very best of luck as they embark on their State Examinations in June. Sports Day 2018

StudentsandstaffinStMarysenjoyedajam-packedsportsdayonFriday18thofMay.Classescompetedineventssuchashockey,handball,benchball,sackrace,egg&spoonraceandmanymore.TYstudentsorganisedandrantheeventsontheday.Teachersandstudentsalikeenjoyedthenoveltyeventswhiletakingawell-deservedbreakfromtheaction.TheinflatableobstaclecourseandhumanfoosballprovidedgreatentertainmentwhiletheTYicecreamstandwasacrowdpleaser.SunsoakedStMary’swasahiveofactivityfromearlymorninguntilwetookashortbreaktowelcomeourspecialguestandapplaudthewinnersofourSportsAwards2018.Oncetheceremonycametoaclosethewholeschoolcommunitymadetheirwaytotheastroforthegameoftheyear;teachersvs6thyearsOlympichandball.Althoughtheteacherswerevictoriousonthedaythe6thyearsweretoughoppositionandplayedrightuntiltheend.Afunfilled,enjoyabledaywashadbyall.Ahugethankyoutoeveryonefortheirinvolvement,enthusiasmandenergy.

Health Week 2018

ThenewyeargotofftoanenergeticstartinJanuaryatStMary’s.TheHealthSquadof2018wasbusyplanningintheweeksleadinguptothisyear’sHealthWeek.AsusualeachdaykickedoffwithMsBoranandtheHealthSquadleadingstudentsinanactiveassembly.5thand6thyearstudentswereluckyenoughtogetsometopexerciseandnutritiontipsfromguestspeakers.Eachdaystaffandstudentsalikewerechallenged

togetinvolvedinthe“GameoftheDay”.Theserangedfrompopuptrailstotugofwars,fromkickandsticktobeatthebleep.Therewassomethingforeveryoneandeachdaysawanewchallenge.OnMonday1styearsweretestedontheirsportingknowledgewithaquizinthechoirhall.OnTuesday3rdyearswereluckyenoughtowelcomeanursefromtheMarieKeatingFoundation.Thisinsightfultalkwasinterestingforallinattendance.ThursdaymorningsawtheschoolcommunitypourontothecorridorsforDropEverythingandDance.Themusicblaredovertheintercomwhilethehealthsquadledtheschoolinacongaline.AnotheractiveassemblytookplaceonThursdayafternoonbutthistimetheHealthSquadgottheprimaryschoolstudentsfromStBrigid’smovinginthechoir

hall.Fridaywasahecticdaytofinishtheweekwithabang.3rdyearhockeyplayerswereinactionwhilethejuniorcamogieteamwerecrownedcountychampionsatlunchtime.TheHomeEconomicsdepartmenttreatedaluckygrouptoacookingdemoatlunchtimetotoptheweekoff.ThroughouttheweektheStMary’s

SchoolCommunitymanagedtowalktheirwayaroundIrelandwhiletryingtoguesshowmanystepsColintakesinanaverageschoolday.AlthoughnobodywasspotonwiththeirguessitbecameclearthatColinfarexceedstherecommendeddailystepsof10,000.AsalwaysHealthWeekwasbusybutbrilliant.AhugethankyouandwelldonetotheHealthSquad2018whohelpedmakeitallhappen.

First Year Sports CompetitionOur1styearstudentsmustbecommendedfortheirdedicationtoourafter-schoolcompetitionthisyear.TenteamsfoughttothebitterendtoattainthewinningprizeofaMysteryTriptoCrokeParksSkylineTour.IntheendthewinningteamwasmadeupofhalfofclassSienna.ThewinnerswenttoCrokeParkonFridayMay11th.ThedaystartedwithastrolltoCrokeParkwheretheyweregreetedbytheirtourguide.ThegirlsweregearedupandbegantheclimbtothetopofCrokePark.Thiswasanamazingopportunityforthegirlstoseethecityfromabird’seyeview.AftertheSkylineTourthegirlsattendedthemuseumwheretheytestedtheirskillsontheGAAchallenges.Thegirlsthoroughlyenjoyedtheirdayandwerewelldeservingwinnersofthecompetition.

Galway TripOurannualTeamBuildingTriptoPetersburginGalwaywasasusualatriptoberemembered.OnabrightdayinSeptember,TYstudentssetoffacrossthecountrytofaceactivitiesthatwouldchallengeandexhilaratethembeyondanythingtheyhadexperiencedbefore.TheaimofthetripwastoworkonthecoreteambuildingskillspresentedtothestudentsduringPEclass.Onarrivalthesunbegantoshineasdidthegirlsenthusiasm.Theyweregreetedbythecentremanagerandtheyweredividedintotaskgroups.InthesegroupsthegirlsgottotakepartinactivitieslikeGorgeWalkingwherethegirlsdivedintotheicecoldwatersofthewest,Abseilingdownamassivesinkhole,Kayaking,ObstacleCourseandmanymore.Eveningactivitiesincludedmoonlightwalks,orienteering,campfires,charadesandsingsongs.Eachgroupwasalsoresponsibleforonemealduringtheday.Thisincludedsettingthetable,servingfoodanddrinks,washingupandcleaningupthecanteenafterwardsgivingeachstudentasenseofresponsibilitythroughoutthethreedaysofthetrip.Thesleepyheadsonthebushomesuggestedthatthetripwasaresoundingsuccessandwewouldliketosaywelldonetothegirlsfortheirenthusiasmandparticipation.Althoughwewereveryluckywiththesunnyweather,thewaterwasvery,verycold.

PExpo 2018 ThePExpoisacompetitionthatexaminesthesciencebehindsport.StudentsfromalloverthecountryenterprojectsfollowingresearchonawiderangeofPEandsportrelatedtopics.2017wasourfirstyeartoenterthiscompetitionwhichisheldinDCU.ThisyearhoweverthankstoanewTYsportssciencemoduletherewerefiveStMarysentries.StudentsfromclassLuimiereandRaphaelworkedveryhardontheirprojectsthroughouttheyear.• TaraMacken,SophieMcGraneandKatieKennedyexploredtheareaofrolemodelsinsportandthemedia’sinfluenceonthis.

ToourdelightCiara,Laura,Alya,KerriandZara’sprojectwaschosenastheseniorwinneroftheSportsPsychologySection.Thisisahugeachievementandoneweareextremelyproudof.Abigwelldonetoallthegroupsthatgotinvolved.

TY Rowing:AspartoftheGetGoing,GetRowinginitiative,whichencouragesfemalestotakeuprowing,top-leveltrainerscametoourschooltoteachthegirlstorow.Firstlytheytookpartintrainingsessionsonindoorergonomicrowers.Thisgavethemaninsightintothebasicskillsnecessaryforrowing.Thesecondpartoftheinitiativewasa

one-dayrowingcampthattookplaceonthewaterinNeptuneRowingClub.Thegirlswerereallyexcitedaboutgettingonthewater,andrealisedtherewasahugedifferencebetweenergonomicrowingandonthewaterrowing.Thefinaleventwasanonthewater

rowingblitz.Weentered7differentteamswhocompetedagainstvariousschoolsfromalloverIreland.Werowedextremelywellwithoneteammakingthefinals.Unfortunatelywedidnottakehomeanysilverware,butthegirlsdidthemselvesproudinasport,whichisrelativelynewtothem.

Basketball2ndYearWehadawonderfulseasonofbasketballwithourdivision1teamthisyear.AfterlosingourfirstmatchtoOurLady’sDroghedainNovemberwewentbacktothedrawingboard,communicatedasateamandreallypulledupoursocks!Afterdevotingmoretimetopractisingafterschoolandtrainingnearlyeveryavailablelunchtime,wewereunstoppablefortherestoftheseasongoingunbeatenintothefinalsattheNationalBasketballArenainTallaght.InAprilitwasallbacktowhereitfirststartedbetweenourselvesandDroghedaagainforthecup.Downtoteamwork,passion,communicationandskillitwasMary’swhoendedup2ndDivision1NorthDublinwinnersfor2018.Mary’sABU!CongratulationstoalltheteamwhoplayedbrilliantlyandaparticularmentiontoCaptainSarahO’ConnorwhowasjustexceptionalonthedaywhocameawaywithanadditionalaccoladeofMVP.Also,toourwonderfulandenthusiasticmascotAlannahDarcywhohadthecrowdontheirfeetwithherhalftimeshow.Whilewedidn’treachanyfinalthisyear

OurDivision21styearteamgotofftoaflyingstartwinningalloftheirgroupgamescomfortably.TheymetStRapheala’sinthequarterfinal.Althoughitwasatoughmatchthegirlsmanagedtopullthroughandmakeitthroughtothesemi-final.TheyplayedagainstMaryfieldinthesemi-finaloftheSSANorthDublinLeague.ItwasatoughMatchfromthebeginningwithbothsideswantingtobooktheirplaceintheFinalintheNationalArenathefollowingThursday.ThematchwasneckandneckuntilthelastfewminutesofthegamewhenMaryfieldpulledaway.TheFinalscorewas12-6.Thisteamhaveworkedsohardallseasonandnevermissedtraining.Welldonegirls!Youshouldbeveryproudofyourachievement.Wewillbackagainnextyearmoredeterminedthanever.

U-19PremierlevelSemi-FinalistsOurU-19premierteamreachedtheSemi-finaloftheSSADublinleague.TheteammetSantaSabinaintheSemiFinalanditwasanunbelievableperformancefromthewholeteam.Thegirlsgotofftoamazingstartandledafterthefirstquarterby5.SantaSabinafoughtbackandwetrailedbyonepointgoingintothelastQuarter.Unfortunately,inthelastquarterSantaSabinasteppeditupandpushedontowinthegame.TheteamwasledsuperblybyCaptainJulieMcEvoyandVice-captainKeirshaRoache.Theteam’sdeterminationandtalentwerecommendableonalllevels.Sadly,thisyearwesaygoodbyetoJulieandKeirshawhohavebeencommittedtobasketballsincetheywereinfirstyear.Ithasbeensuchanenjoyablejourneyoverthelast6years.Welldonegirls!Youdidyourschoolproudoverthelastsixyearsandyouwillbegreatlymissedontheteam.

Camogie ItwasanexcellentyearforcamogieatStMary’sin2018,themostsuccessfulyeartodate.Everystudentwholinedoutfortheschool,closesoutthisschoolyearasaDublincamogiechampion.Thegirlswereacredittotheirfamiliesandtheirclubsandwewouldliketothankthemforbeingsuchajoytoworkwiththisyear.Wearelookingforwardtocontinuedsuccessnextyearanditisourhopethatwewillhaveevenmoregirlsplaying,andenjoying,camogieintheschoolinthefuture.

AseniorcamogieteamlinedoutforStMary’sforthefirsttimeinanumberofyearsthisyear.Theexperienceandtalentofthegirlswasevidentineverymatchtheyplayedthroughouttheyear.OpeningmatchesagainstLoretoSwordsandSantaSabinaleftthegirlsinagreatpositiontoqualifyfortheDublinSeniorFinal,withawinoverGoatstowninathrillingsemi-final.LoretoBeaufortwasnomatchforthe

girls’hardworkanddeterminationonthedayofthefinal.Despitegettingofftoashakystartandbeingtwogoalsdowninthe

openingtenminutes,theteamdisplayedgreatskillandstrengthtoeventuallytakecontrolofthegame.Theteampulledoffasuperbvictory,muchtothedelightoftheirsupporters.ThegirlsproudlyrepresentedDublinintheLeinsterquarterfinalinfrontofahomecrowdinErin’sIsle,afirstforcamogieintheschool.

JuniorCamogie

ThejuniorcamogieteambegantheirseasonwithwinsoverStLouis’RathminesandTrinityComprehensive.WithgreatdeterminationthegirlstookonLoretoBeaufortintheirsemi-final.Thesemi-finalwasquiteaclosematchbutthegirls’superiorskillandsuperbteamworksawthemqualifyforthefinal.Aweekafterwinningtheseniorfinal,the

thirdandfourthyearslinedoutagainstGaelscoilReachranninthehopesofdoingthedouble,whilethesecondyearshopedtogettheirfirsttasteofsuccess.Theconfidenceandwinningmentality,inspiredbytheseniorvictory,waseasytoseewithplayersalloverthefieldgivingphenomenaldisplays.AsDublinchampionstheJuniorteamqualifiedforanAll-IrelandquarterfinalagainstHaywoodinLaoisanddidtheirfamiliesandtheschoolproudwiththeirdisplayofplay.

Theminorcamogieteamfollowedinthefootstepsofthejuniorandseniorteamsthisyear.ThegirlsgotofftoadifficultstartinsnowyconditionsagainstStLouis’RathminesbutwentfromstrengthtostrengthwithemphaticwinsoverLoretoBeaufortandLoretoontheGreen.TheDublinMinorfinalbeckonedandthe

girlsrosetothechallengeandtrainedhard.Thegirlsplayedwellinthefirsthalfbutfoundthemselvesfourpointsdownathalf-time.Thededicationanddeterminationofthegirls,whichdefinescamogieinStMary’s,wasevidentinthesecondhalf.Followingpositionalswitchesandchanges,thegirlssettledbackintothematchandquicklydrewlevel.StMary’sdominatedforthelasttenminutesandranoutworthywinnersonascorelineof5-5of2-4.MsWalsh&MsO’Mahoney

St Mary’s Hockey HockeyNewsInSeptember,thenewfirstyearstookpartinasportsinductionprogramme.ThiswasafantasticsuccessandintroducedthenewfirstyearsstudentstothemanysportsandactivitiesthatStMary’shastooffer.ThepreparationforleaguematchescommencedinSeptember2017.Greatexcitementmountedasallteamspreparedfortheirfirsthockeymatches.ThegirlswerehighlyexcitedattheprospectofgettingbackintoplayingmatchesandasalwaystookgreatprideinrepresentingStMary’sinhockey.TheteamshadagreatstartintheirpracticematchesagainstMtTemple.ThefifthandsixthyearstudentscombinedtoformtheSeniorTeam.TheSeniorandJunior(TY)TeamssecuredaplaceintheNorthsideLeagueFinalsonWednesday14thMarch2018.

FirstYearHockeyWewelcomedsomeFirstyearstudentstohockeythisyear!Theywerecompletebeginnersinhockey.ThefirstyearstookpartintheHockeyIrelandSkillsChallenge.WeweredelightedtohaveKennyCarroll,HockeyIrelandDevelopmentOfficercoachingthebasichockeyskillstothem.Allthestudentsreceivedacertificateofcompletioninthehockeyskillschallenge.ThefirstyearsalsobenefitedfromourguestcoachTadghCunninghamwhoimpressedthegirlswithhishockeyskillsandputthemthroughtheirpaces.ThestudentsreallyenjoyedthesessionsbyTadgh.ThankyoutoMsCunninghamwhoassistedwithFirstyearhockeythisyear.

SecondYearHockeyThesecondyearteamstartedtheyearbyplayingfriendlymatchesagainstour3rdYearteamandMtTemple.Thematchesbuiltontheirskillsanddeterminationinpreparationfortheleague.ThesecondyearstookonStWolstan’sintheirfirstleaguematchandhadagreatwin,scoring2goals.ThiswinsetthemupnicelyfortheirnexttwomatchesagainstMalahideandLoretoBalbriggan.TheyhadaveryexcitingcloselycontestedmatchinMalahidewinning1-0attheveryend.However,LoretoBalbrigganprovedtobetoostrongforStMary’sandtheycouldnotgetthewinontheday.Unfortunately,theymissedoutonqualificationtothefinals.Theirgreatachievementsthisyearhasmadethemmoreeageranddeterminedfornextyear.

JuniorTeams–3rdYearandTYTherearetwoJuniorteamsthisyear,3rdyearteamandaTransitionYearteam.The3rdyearteamplayedafriendlymatch

againstMtTempletogetthembackintothespiritonhockey.Thematchbuiltontheirskillsanddeterminationinpreparationfortheleague.TheycommencedtheNorthsideLeaguematchesinJanuary2018,takingonCastleknock,winning3-2inaveryexcitingmatch.TheyalsoplayedManorHouseina

Senior&JuniorTYreachtheNorthsideLeagueFinalsCongratulationstotheSeniorandJunior(TY)HockeyteamsforreachingtheNorthsideLeagueFinals.TheseniorandjuniorTYteamsplayedsomegreathockeyandhadsomecloselycontestedmatchesintheirleagues.BothteamssecuredplacesintheNorthsideLeaguefinalsonWednesday14thMarch2018.Unfortunately,itwasnotStMary’sday.I

canonlycommendalltheplayersonafantasticperformanceinsomeoftheworstsportingweatherconditionsI’veeverexperienced.Wetrulydidweatherastormontheday!Theplayersbravedtheelements,slippingandslidingaroundthepitchbuttheynevergaveupandkeptgoingtothefinalwhistle!Bothmatcheswentintogoldengoalextratimeandtopenaltyshootouts.Unfortunately,bothteamswerenarrowlybeateninthepenaltyshoot-outs.TheJuniorteamtookonKing’sHospital

(KH)andplayedsomeexcellenthockey.Theystartedstrong,dominatingplayandwinningshortcorners.Theynarrowlymissedthetargetonseveraloccasions.Theyhadnumerousopportunitiesanditseemedonlyamatteroftimebeforetheywouldscore.AstheclockcounteddownthewinninggoalbecamemoreelusivewithTheKingsHospitalgoalkeeperkeepingtheoppositioninthegame.AgainsttherunofplayKHscoredfromashortcorner.StMary’sfinallyhitthetargetandthefinalscorewas1-1bringingthematchintoextratime.Again,inextratime,wenarrowlymissedthetargetandhadmostofthechancesinthegame.Thepenaltyshoot-outdidnotgoourway,butourgoalkeeperChaniceDolanmadesomeexcellentsaves.

TheseniorteamtookonSantaSabinaintheirfinal.TheyalsoplayedsomeexcellenthockeyandweredeterminedtotryandsavethedaywithawinforStMary’s.Bynow,theconditionshaddeterioratedevenmoreandtheyalsobattledtheelements.Theystartedstrongnarrowlymissingthetargetandwinningsomeshortcorners.TheSantaSabinagoalkeeperwastestedbyourforwardline.Thefinalscorewas0-0bringingthematchintoextratime.Again,inextratime,theynarrowlymissedthetargetandhadmostoftheopportunitiesinthegame.Thepenaltyshoot-outdidnotgoourwayagain,butsomeexcellentsavesfromChaniceDolantokeepusintherunning.Finalscore0-1.

ThisyearwasaverysuccessfuloneforGaelicFootballhereatStMary’s,albeitwithoutanysilverware.Ourseniorsplayedsomeverytoughgamesowingtotheirsuccesslastyearinwinningtheirdivisionandgainingpromotion.Unfortunately,theydidnotprogressbeyondthegroupstagesalthoughtheyshowedgreatpassionandcommitmentthroughout.OurJuniorTeamreachedtheLeinster

QuarterFinal,agreatachievementforthemselvesandtheschool.Ultimately,homeadvantageworkedagainstusandaftertravellingtoplaytheLouthchampionsathome,wewereunabletomatchthehighexpectationsofthisverytalentedgroup.Finally,ourUnder14teamenjoyedthe

DublinBlitzinMalahidebutunfortunatelydidnotprogressontheday.ThefutureisbrightforGaelicFootballhereinStMary’sandI’msuresilverwarewillreturnonceagain.OnbehalfofMr.BeirneandMsMorgan,abigthankyoutoallthestudentswhoshowedgreatcommitmentanddedicationallyear.

ThispastyearinStMary’sthetennisclubmeteveryMondayatlunchtimeintheGym.Theclubisopentoallschoolmembersregardlessofwhethertheyhaveplayedtennisbeforeornotsowhynotcomealongandseeiftenniscouldbethesportforyou!Itisafunenvironmentwherestudentslearnthebasicsoftennisbyrallyingandplayinggameswiththeirschoolmates.Wehavehadagreatturnoutinrecentweeksandhopetoseethiscontinuewhenwereturnfromtheholidays.TheSpringChampionshipssawplayerscompeteagainsteachotheroveranumberofweeksandthematcheswerebrillianttowatch!TheStMary’sTennisClubwouldliketowishallstudents,teachersandfamiliesanenjoyablesummerholiday.Enjoythebreak,

TY Wheelchair BasketballChampionshipInassociationwithTheIrishWheelchairAssociationTheschoolsupportedtheIrish

WheelchairAssociationasoneofourchosencharitiesthisyear.TheTYstudentsraised€1,000forthecharitythroughtheannualfundraisingcampaign,‘Angels’.ThiswasthefirstyearoftheinitiativeandStMary’swasoneof50schoolsacrossthe

countrytotakepart.TenstudentstravelledtoGormanstownCollegeinMeathtotakepartintheregionalcompetitionsonthe8thofFebruary.ThestudentswereimmersedinthefastpacededgeofyourseatParalympicsportofWheelchairBasketball.Itprovidedanauthentic,first-hand,inclusiveexperienceofthisincrediblegame.AllteamsfortheeventweremixedforthematchessowewerejoinedwithStEunan’sCollegeinLetterkenny.Theteamworkdisplayedbetweenthenewlyformedteamswasamazingtowatch!OurteamconsistingofKarlaConway,TaraMacken,CatrionaComerford,NiamhFinneganandSophie

Morrissey,finishedthirdintheLeinsterfinalandprogressedontotheAll-IrelandFinalinTallaghtinMarch.TheTYstudentshadagreattimeattheFinals.Wewerefacedwithtoughcompetitionthroughouttheday.TheeventwasarealeyeopenerforthestudentsastheyplayedagainststudentsoftheirownagewhoplayWheelchairBasketballinclubsandonestudentinparticularshowedamazingstrength,speedandagility,despitehavingtwoamputatedlegs.Thishasreallyshownstudentsthatsportisforeveryoneandit’sreallymoreaboutabilitythandisability!

HardworkanddedicationsawStMary’sFirstYearSoccerteammakethefinaloftheLeinsterChampionshipsthisyear,wheretheywereunfortunatetofallatthefinalhurdle.ThematchtookplaceatHomeFarmFCagainstlocalrivalsDominicanCollegeandconcludedwiththelatterteamrunningoutvictorsontheday.Bothteams’achievementswerecelebratedafterthefinalwhistlewithamedalpresentationandafewwordsfromgoalscorerandcaptainforthedayKateWatsonwhoscoredineveryroundapartfromoneinthebuilduptothefinal.

Theirjourneytothefinalwasmeteoricasthegirlsswattedteamsasidewithscorelineslike5-0and5-1.Asthesuccessoftheteambuiltandechoedaroundthefirst-yearcohort,thesoccerteamgrewinpersonnelandsupportthroughouttheyearculminatinginapaneloftwentyplayers,eachofwhichplayedapartintheirjourneytothefinal.Welldoneagaintothesoccerteamwhohavesetthestandardfor

module.Themoduleconsistedoftheoryandpracticalelements.Throughoutthemodulestudentslearnedhowtounderstandthecriminalmind-setandpractisedreadingbodylanguagebeforeconflict.Theyalsolearnedhowtoverballyde-escalatepotentiallydangeroussituationsanddiscussedtheconceptofself-defenceandthelawinIreland.Studentsobserveddemonstrationsoftechniquesandthenpractisedsome

ofthesetechniquesundercarefulsupervisionandguidance.Studentslearnedaboutpre-emptivestrikes,howtoescapefrombearhugs,headlocks,assaultpositionsandstudiedavarietyofarmgrabs,collargrabsandreleases.Hereiswhat4Lumierehadtosayaboutthemodule:

BT Young Scientist and TechnologyExhibition 2018CongratulationstoLaurenMcGuinnessandSarahBradyfromTYwhowereselectedtotakepartintheRDSatthisyear’sBTYoungScientistandTechnologycompetition.Theproject‘Aninvestigationintoyoungattitudestowardsteleviseddrinkanddrugdrivingcampaigns’receivedwonderfulpositivefeedbackfromthejudgesandinterestformpoliticians,journalistsandacademicresearchers.Theybuiltandincorporatedavirtualdrivingexperienceattheirstandwhichallowedpeopletoexperiencehowdangerousitistodrivewhileundertheinfluenceofsubstances.Theyalsotestedtelevisedcampaignswithaudiencestoguageandmeasuretheirreactions.

TY Gaisce AwardGaiscewasprobablythebiggestpartofTransitionYearformeaswebeganitallthewaybackinSeptember.TherewerefourdifferentcomponentstoGaisce;communitywork,askill,asportandanadventurejourney.Communityworkinvolvedustakinganhourouteachweektohelpeitheranindividualpersonorgroupinourcommunity.Thisrangedfromcheckinginonaelderlyneighbourtovolunteeringinacharityshopinthearea.ThePersonalSkillinvolveduslearningsomethingnew,anexampleofwhichwas

knitting,learningtoplayaninstrumentordrawing.Thelistofpossibilitiesisendless.ThePhysicalRecreationisallaboutdevelopingahealthylifestylebycommittingatleastonehouraweektoasportsuchasgymwork,hikingorcycling.IpersonallyreallyenjoyedthispartofGaisceasIdidlearnalotofnewthings.Finally,Gaisceconcludedwithahikethatwasdifficultbutwasprobablymyfavouritepartofitall.Itbroughtusalltogetherevenmoreasateam.Let’sjustsaythatyes,thehikewashard,somecalledithell,butIreallyenjoyedit.AbbieJakes(4Schumann)

The End of a Successful andMemorable Academic Yearfor The History DepartmentThisacademicyearhasbeenamemorableyetbusyonefortheHistoryDepartment.ThisyearLeavingCertstudentsfromboth5thand6thyearwentonatriptoDerryandBelfastwiththeirHistoryteachersaspartoftheNorthernIrelandaspectoftheirLeavingCertcourse.ThisincludedvisitstotheDerryBloodySundayMemorialMuseum,theinfamousPeaceWallandatriptoStormontinBelfast.Thetripwasthoroughlyenjoyedbyall.TheHistoryDepartmentalsocelebratedwomen’shistorymonthinMarch

withawonderfuldisplaydedicatedtowomeninhistoryontheHistorynoticeboardaswellasadisplaybyourstaffroomcelebrating100yearsofvotesforwomen.Thedisplaywasbeautifullydecoratedby6thyearstudentsRiodhnaMackin,SabrinaLakatosandSophieLieghio.SomemembersoftheHistoryclubattendedthefirsteverpermanentexhibitionoftheIrishflagattheGPOWitnessHistoryVisitorCentrewithMrO’ConnellandMsDoyle.TheexhibitioninstalledbytheThomasMeagherFoundationwasdedicatedataceremonytocommemoratethe170thanniversaryofthefirstflyingoftheflag.We

Politics and Society WhilereflectingonthepasttwoyearsofstudyingPoliticsandSociety,IrememberallofthethingsthatmyclassandIhavelearnedascitizensoftheworld.OurclasswillbeoneofthefirsteverclassestositPoliticsandSocietyasaleavingcertexamwhichisexcitingbutalsoquitedaunting.WehavehadanamazingtwoyearsstudyingthisnewandinnovativesubjectwithouramazingteacherMs.Hayes.Ithasallowedeachandeveryoneofustoflourishnotonlyasstudents,butalsoaspeople.Bystudyingthissubject,wewereallowedtoformulateourownopinionsoncurrentsocialissuesandontopicsthatactuallymatterintheworld.Welearnedthataslongasyouhaveevidencetobackupyourargumentthenthisargumentisviable.Thisisaskillthateverysingleoneofuswilltakewithusintothefuture.Overthepasttwoyears,ourclasswas

luckyenoughtohavegoneonafewtripsandtohavehadafewguestspeakerstocomeinandtalktous.NoelRockTDcametoourclasstotakepartinadiscussion.Followingthisdiscussion,wewereinvitedtogototheDailforatour.Thiswasveryinteresting.WealsowenttoaWomeninPoliticsconferencewhichwasalsoveryinterestingandinspiring.AtthisconferencewemetLynnBoylanMEP.NottoolongagosheactuallycameintotalktoourclassabouteverythingEU.ThiswasaveryhelpfultalkthataidedusalotinlearningaboutwhattheEUactuallydo.(Whoknewthattheydosomuch!)WealsowentonagrouptriptoBelfastandDerrytolearnaboutthecomplexpoliticalsituationinNorthernIreland.Thistripwasanunforgettableexperiencethatwaseducationalandeyeopening,butalsoincrediblyfun.IthinkthatsumsupPoliticsandSocietyasasubject–unforgettable,educationalandeyeopening,

butalsogreatcraic.Overall,Iamsogratefulforbeinggiven

theopportunitytodothissubject.Don’tgetmewrong,itwasextremelyhardattimes(likewhenwehadtodoouractivecitizenshipprojectsfortheleavingcert…)butitwassoworthitintheend.WealsofounditdifficulttocometotermswithwhoaremembersofthemysteriousBoardofManagementbutafterawhilewefoundotherthingstodiscuss/debate.DoingthissubjectwasthebestdecisionthatIhaveevermade.IthashelpedmedecideonwhatIwanttodointhefutureandhowtoactuallygetthere.Iwillneverforgetourclassandhowmuchwehavegrowntogetheraspeople,Ilovethoseguys.Thanksforreading!

WewereveryfortunatetohaveTomiReichental,aholocaustsurvivor,visittheschoolonThursday15thMarchtospeaktoTYHistoryandLeavingCertHistoryandGermanstudents.TomiReichentalwasbornin1935inSlovakia.HewasnineyearsoldwhentheNazisdeportedhimwithhismother,grandmother,aunt,cousinandbrothertoBergen-Belsenconcentrationcamp.Tomilostthirty-fivemembersofhisfamilyintheHolocaust.TomihaslivedinDublinsince1959andregularlytalksinIrishschoolsabouthiswartimeexperiences.WeweredelightedtobeabletoopenthiseventalsotointerestedparentsandareparticularlyindebtedtophotographerKeithDixonwhoattendedandtookthephotographsthataccompanythispiece.Tomispokeabouthisexperiences–bothharrowinganduplifting–toaraptaudienceforalmosttwohours,afterwhichhetookquestionsfromthefloor.AttheendofthetalktwoofourTYstudentspresentedTomiwithabeautifulplantedbasketasatokenofourgratitudeandappreciation.AftertheeventTomikindlystayedbehindtosigncopiesofhisbookforstudents,teachersandparents.

genderroles,stereotypesandexpectations,genderrepresentationinthemediaandexploringtheroleofwomeninsocietyandgrowthoffeministmovements.Studentsallreallyengagedwiththemodulewellanddroveexcellentdiscussionanddebateonallthedifferentissues.AspartofthemodulestudentsattendedtheCocoBrownFutureLeaderseventatJohnstownHouseHotel.ThegirlsgottolistentofourinspiringwomenincludingMarissaCarter,CEOofCocoBrown.ThedaywasreallymotivationalanditbecameclearthatwehavemanyfutureleadersinourcurrentTYgroup.

attackedtheGovernmentScienceandTechnicalCollegeinthetownofDapchiinYobestate,Nigeria.TheNigeriangovernmentconfirmedthat

110girlsweremissingaftersuspectedBokoHarammilitantsattackedaschoolinthenortheastofthecountry.Thekidnappingbringsbackpainfulmemoriesofthe2014ChibokabductionwhenBokoHaramkidnapped276girlsfromtheirschool,aneventthatgarneredinternationalattentionwiththeworldwide#BringBackOurGirlscampaign.

6th Year Graduation2018ThethemeofGraduationthisyearwas‘Thefuturebelongstothosewhobelieveinthebeautyoftheirdreams’.Inchoosingthistheme,thestudentswantedtofocusontheirfuturelives,theirambitions,hopes,goalsanddreams.Astheyleaveusandgooutintotheworldtheyhavethepotentialtoachievesomuch,tomakearealdifferenceintheirlivesandthelivesofothers.Eachclasscreatedalifesize

dream-catchertorepresentthedreamsoftheclass.Theyalsopaintedacanvasframewithsymbolsandimagesoftheirhopesanddreamsforthefuture.Thesewerehungaroundthewallsofthegymfortheirparentstosee.Thebanneralsodisplayedthethemeofthenight.ThisyeartheGraduation

Ceremonytooktheformofaliturgy,withprayers,readings,agospel,homilyandprayersofthefaithful.Itbeganwithacandleprocessionfollowedbyacandleceremonywithstudents,staffandparents.FrRichardpresidedovertheliturgyandwasinspirationalinhishomilytothegirlswherehefocusedon

thethemeofdreams,hopesandgoalsfortheirfuturelives.TheEmberTeamhandedovertothenewteaminaspiritualceremony.Interspersedwitheachofthesewereclasspresentationsofcertificatesandgiftstothestudents.TheMargaretAylwardAwardwaspresentedtotheworthyrecipient,SophieLieghio,asvotedforbythestudentsthemselves.MsBourkeaddressedthestudents,parentsandstaff.ThiswasfollowedbytheHeadGirlLaurynMcCauslandandDeputyHeadGirlRachelHogan’saddresstotheirfellowstudentscombinedwithapoignantfilmoftheirjourneythroughStMary’s.Asalways,thechoirwere

excellentandreallyenhancedtheevening,particularlyattheendwhentheyallsangthegraduationsongs.WeintheReligion

Iceland TripDay1WearrivedinKeflavíkairportonOctober26th.FromtherewedrovetothevolcanicpeninsulaofReykjanes,anareaofgreatvolcanicactivitywithseveraldormantvolcanoesandmanyextensivelavafields.OnwardstoKrísuvíkGeothermalAreatowitnessamoonscapeofbubblingsulphuricmud-poolsandsteamvents.Thelaststopbeforewesettledintothehostel,wasthenewlyopenedLavaCentrewhichhadexcellentinteractivedisplaysexplainingthetectonichistoryofIceland.

Day2WestartedwithatouroftheSWofIcelandwhichincludedthreeofthebest-knownattractionsIcelandhastooffer.StartingwithGullfoss,TheGoldenWaterfall,oneofthemostimpressivewaterfallsinEurope,continuingwithTheGeysir Areawithnumeroushotsprings,fumerolesandgeysersandÞingvellir,aremarkablegeologicalsitewherewestoodbetweentheEurasianandNorthAmericanplates.OnthewaybackwestoppedoffatKeridCraterwherewewalkedtherimthendescendedintothecraterlake.

Day3BlueskiesandsunshinewerewithusforourhikeontheSólheimajökullglacier.InthebackgroundwecouldseethesnowshroudedHeklaandtheicecappedvolcanoEyjafjallajökull,whichwaslastactivein2010.WethencontinuedontothecoastaltownofVikforaspotofshopping.NextstopwasthefamousblacksandbeachofReynisfjarawithitstoweringbasaltcolumns.Wefinishedoffanamazingdaybywatchingthesunsetwhilewalkingbehindawaterfall.

Day4ThemorningwasspentexploringoneofIcelandmostbeautifullavacaves–Raufarhólshellir.ThewasfollowedbyahiketotheReykjadalurvalley;ageothermalareawithanaturallyheatedriverwhereyoucanbathe.Backtothehosteltopackupforthejourneyhomebutnotbeforeonefinaltrip–anighttimevisittotheworldfamousBlueLagoon.TheLagoonisauniqueformation;alagoonwithpleasantlywarmmineral-richgeothermalwaterinamiddleofablacklavafield.Thegirlswereabsolutelyfantasticand

embracedeverythingwithenthusiasm.Itwasapleasuretotravelwithyouall!Amassivethankstotheteacherswhogenerouslygaveoftheirtimetomakethishappen–itismuchappreciated,asareyourcardplayingskills!

6th Year Burren Trip6thyeargeographystudentsheadedofftotheBurrenforthefirstweekendoftheEasterholidays.WemadeabriefstopoffattheAilweecavesenroutetocheckouttheeffectsofcarbonationonaKarstlandscape.Saturdaywasjam-packedwithactivities.Westartedthemorningwithrockclimbingandabseiling;weweresoimpressedwithsomeofthegirlswhoovercametheirfearstomakeittouptherockwall.ThiswasfollowedbyaguidedhikeacrossthelimestonepavementwhereweobservedmayfeaturestypicaloftheBurren.ItwasabeautifuldayandtheAranIslandswerevisibleoffthecoast.WeroundedoffthedaywithatriptoLahinch.Wewerekittedoutwithwetsuitsandsurfboards,andwehitthewaves.Literally!Wehadatwo-hoursurflessonandalotoffun.OnSundaywe

5th YearOurcurrent5thyearstudentsrecentlywenttoBalscaddenBayinHowthtoconducttheirgeographicalinvestigationaspartoftheirseniorcyclegeographycourse.Thegirlsbecameactivegeographersbycarryingoutdifferentcoastaltestsandmethodstoinvestigateandanalyseprocessesthatarecurrentlyaffectingthebay’sformation.Byusingprimarydataresultsandsecondarysourcesofinformation,StMary’sstudentswereabletoidentifyactivecoastalprocesswhichhaveresultedinthebaytoretreatatanaveragerateof37msince1840.Wewereblessedtohavesuchwonderfulweatherthatreallyaddedtotheatmosphereofthedaywhichwefinishedoffwithice-creamdownonHowthPier.

FrenchClubthisyearwasgreatfun.FrenchclubwasoneveryTuesdayatlunchtime.ThegoodthingaboutFrenchClubisthatyoudon’tneedtostudyFrenchtocomealong.WehadalotoffunplayingFrenchgamesandeatingdelicioussnackslikesbiscuits,croissantsandchocolate.WeplayedFrenchgameslikeSeptFamilles,BoulesandaFrenchcardgamecalledLoveLetters.SeptFamillesisagreatgamewhereweeachgetasetofcards.Theaimofthegameistofindawholefamilyset.Thepersonwhocompletesthemostamountofsetswins.AtfirstweplayedthisgamethroughEnglishbutbytheendoftheyear,wecouldplayitalmostentirelythroughFrenchbyaskingquestionslike‘As-tulacarterouge?’whichmeans‘Doyouhavetheredcard?’.Thegamecangetreallycompetitiveandisgreatfun.BoulesisalsoagreatFrenchgame.This

DebatingThisterm,theSeniordebatingclubwasverybusywithboththeDennyAll-IrelandSchools’DebatingCompetitionandtheConcernDebates.Howevereverymemberoftheclubrosetothechallengeandworkedtogethertoensuregreatsuccesses,whethertravellingacrossDublintodebateordedicatingtimetoresearchingawidevarietyoftopicsandthemes.TheteamrepresentingStMary’sintheConcerndebatestackledsomeofthemostimportantissuesfacingtheworldtoday,suchastheAIDSepidemicandtheimportanceofeducationforwomen.Itwascleartotheaudiencethatourstudentswerehighlypassionateaboutthesetopicsandworkedveryhardindeliveringwellresearched,thoughtfularguments.WhiletheConcerndebatingteamwereexcellentineachoftheirdebatesandreceivedhighpraisefromtheadjudicators,theynarrowlymissedoutonprogressingtothenextroundofthecompetition.TheDennyAll-IrelandSchools’DebatingCompetitionalsocontinuedwithgreatsuccesswiththethird

roundtakingplaceinJanuarythisyear.KerryMcManus,AlanMasterson,SophieLieghioandRiodhnaMackinrepresentedStMary’sagainanddebatedanumberofcontroversialtopicsonTuesdayeveningsinbothTrinityCollegeDublinandUCD.ThequarterfinalstookplaceonTuesdaythe23rdJanuaryinUCD.SophieandRiodhnaopposedthemotionthatThishousebelievesdevelopingcountriesshouldputinplacepoliciesthatheavilydisincentiviseruraltourbanmigrationwhileAlanwasinfavour.Thestandardwasextremelyhighatthisstageofthecompetitionwhichledtoafieryeventwithparticipantsbattlingitouttoguaranteeawin!SophieandRiodhnawentontocompeteinthesemi-finalofthisprestigiouscompetitiononTuesdaythe

30thJanuaryinTrinityCollegeDublin.ThegirlsweredealingwiththeextremelydifficultandcontroversialtopicofreligiouswarfareinIranandcameupagainstanumberofverywell-establishedschoolswithinthedebatingcommunity.Despitethis,theteamspokewithgreatconfidenceandbeliefintheirpositiononthetopic.Unfortunately,theynarrowlymissedoutonaspotinthefinalofthecompetition.Thewholeschoolcommunitywasdelightedandveryproudthat,althoughthisteamwasnewtotheworld

awarenessofmentalhealthdifficultiesandraisesvitalfundsforthecharitythatworkstopreventsuicideandprovideservicesforthoseaffectedbysuicide.PietaHouse’svisionisofaworldwhere“suicide,self-harmandstigmahavebeenreplacedbyhope,self-careandacceptance.”

Creative EngagementThisyear,StMary’sArtdepartmentembarkedontwonewCreativeEngagementprojects.ThefirstbeganinJanuary,wherethe5thyearsengagedinoriginalresearch,makingcross-curricularlinksbetweenoneoftheirLeavingCertsubjectsandaschooltriptoDublinPort.TheprojectwasledbyartistEleanorPhillipsandartteachersMsKavanaghandMsCunningham.Eachstudentwasrequiredto

createanartpiecefromtheLeavingCertcourseworkthatreflectedtheirresearch.Theprojectwasnotwithoutitschallenges,asitaskedstudentstoengagewithhigherlevelthinkingandtoworkinadisciplinedandself-motivatedmanner,undertheguidanceoftheirteachersandartist.Theprojectculminatedwithagroup-basedevaluationfacilitatedbyEleanorPhillips,whichenabledthestudentstoreflectontheirengagementintheprojectandthesuccessoftheirrealisedwork.We’reveryproudofthestudents’hardworkandlookforwardtoexhibitingitintheautumn.

Biodiversity gardenlaunched by Holy Faithsisters and Green SchoolscommitteeTheHolyFaithsisters,StMary’sGreenSchoolscommittee,somemembersofthepublicandcelebrityenvironmentalist,DuncanStewart,launchedanewbiodiversitygardenonSaturdayApril21st.Thisgardenwillbeinthefieldbesidethetenniscourts.ItwillcontainnativeIrishwildflowerswhichwillattractpollinatingbeesandbugswhichwillencouragemoreplantsandwildlifetoflourish.Thisisimportantforthefutureoflifeonearthandisoneofthegreatestchallengesfacinghumans.MembersoftheGreenSchoolscommitteeareholdingacompetitiontonamethiswildflowergardenandaluckywinnerwillbepickedsoon.

Biodiversity FlagSt.Mary’sGreenSchoolscommitteearegoingfortheirfifthgreenflagforbiodiversity.SofarStMary’shavegottheirflagsforrecycling,water,energyandtravel.Thisflagissoimportanttoraise

awarenessofhowwecanprotectthespeciesofplantsandanimalsthatareendangered.Canyouimagineawarmsummer’sdaywithoutthebuzzofabumblebee?Thisisentirelypossiblenow.Werelyonspecieslikethebumblebeetopollinateourplantstomovepollenfromoneflowertoanother–causingnewplantstogrow.

Withoutpollinatinginsects,theplantsonwhichwerelyforfoodsimplywon’tgrow!Somanyofthespeciesofplantsandanimalsonwhichwerelyonarenowextinct.Didyouknowthatsince197040%ofspeciesareextinct!Whatwillearthbelikein50yearsifthetrendskeepgoingthisway?

Council,classcaptainsandvice-captains,FifthYearPoliticsandSocietystudentsaswellasteachersfromtheHistoryDepartmentandthemanagementteamgreetedMinisterReginaDohertyat2pmonMonday26thFebruary.ShekindlyacceptedtheStudentCouncil’sinvitationtocometoherAlmaMatertocelebratewithstudentsthe‘RoadtoVotes’whichcelebrates100yearsofvotesforwomen.TheceremonywasfittinglyopenedwithHannahRyanMurphysinging‘Amhránna

bhFiann’.MembersoftheStudentCouncil–EmilyMcElroy,KarenLoma,RheanneRobles,EmilyDixonandEmilyGallagherparticipatedintheceremony.Emilytoldtheassembledgroupaboutthebackgroundofthe‘RoadtoVotes’whileKarengaveapottedhistoryofConstanceMarkiewicz.ThiswasfollowedbyLeannespeakingabouttheroleofwomeninIrishParliamentaryPoliticstoday.Afterthiswonderful

presentationMsBourkewelcomedtheministertothestagetospeakabouttheimportanceofwomeninleadershipandtoinspirethemtoseekoutleadershiproles.Theministerwelcomedquestionsfromtheaudienceafterher

insightfulspeech.TheclosingmusicfortheceremonywasfromourHeadGirlLaurynMcCauslandwhosangthehauntinglybeautifulballad‘Grace’.TwoofourFirstYears,EmilyDixonandEmilyGallagherpresentedtheministerwithaframedpictureoftheschoolsurroundedbyinspirationalquoteswhichwasdesignedbyMazzyHollerich.MsBourkeconcludedtheceremonyandthemembersofthestudentcouncilbroughttheministertothelibraryforrefreshments.Wethanktheministerformarkingthe‘RoadtoVotes’intheschool(andlatertweetingaboutit!)andalsotoMrFarrellfororganisingthisuniqueeventintheschoolcommunity.

Navan ChoralFestival 2018TheScholaChoirenteredtheNavanChoralFestivalagainthisyear.Theycompetedinthe‘LiturgicalChoir’section.Theysangtwopiecesinthiscompetition,“StellaSplendens”byTonyAlonsoand‘EverythingIhaveisyours’composedbyMr.Coll.Theywereagainsteightotherchoirsandthestandardwasveryhigh.Thegirlshaveworkedreallyhardtodevelopthischoiranditismostcertainlyontheup.Theyreceivedoutstanding

commentsfromthejudgeandwerecomplementedfortheir“beautiful,heartfeltandrousingperformances

Emmanuel 2018St.Mary’swaswellrepresentedagainthisyearattheEmmanuelConcertintheHelix.Forty-fivestudentsrepresentedtheschoolattheannualEmmanuelConcertinTheHelixonMonday5thFebruary.SpecialcongratulationstoourthreesoloistsCaseyHarris,GemmaReillyandDianaButoc.ForCaseyandGemmaitwasanemotionaloccasion,as,being

6thyearsthiswastheirlastopportunitytoparticipateinthisgloriousyearlyevent.Dianaisin2ndyearsoshewillhavemanymoreopportunitiestotakepart.OnMondayDianawasoneofagroupoffourstudentsfromvariousschoolschosentosingMrColl’sowncomposition‘EverythingIhaveisYours.’Itisapiecethegirlsknowverywellaswehaveuseditmanytimesfordifferentcelebrations.Allstudentsenjoyedthe

experienceofsingingintheHelixandahugethankstoallthestudentsinthechoirwhoalwaysworksohardthroughouttheyearandarealwayssodedicated.

Music Practicals

IthasbeenabusytimeintheMusicDepartmentinpreparation fortheMusicpracticalexaminations.Allthegirlshaveworkedhardandbothexaminerscommentatedonthehighstandardofmusicperformed.Thestyleofpiecesperformedvaried,fromIrishtraditionalmusic,toclassicaland fromcontemporary musictorock.Wewishour3rdand6thyearseverysuccessintheirwritten examinations inJune.

The Annual StMary’s “ MusicShowcase” 2018TowardstheendofeveryyearthemusicaltalentofStMary’swasshowcasedinonenightofgreatentertainmentinStMary’schoirhall.PerformancesonthenightconsistedofstudentsfromtheJuniorandLeavingcertclassesperformingtheirpracticalpieces.Classperformancesfrom1st,2ndand5thyearmusicclasses,theTYmusicclassesandtheschoolchoiralsofeatured.Intotaltherewere37performanceswithcompereonthenight,MrMcGill.Some2ndYearArtstudentsworemaskstoaccompanyGemmaReilly’sperformance‘ThisisMe’andtheaudiencegottoviewthefabulousJunkKouturecostumesthatwerecreatedbyTYstudentswiththehelpofMsKavanagh.Itwasagreatnightofmusicandagreatwaytoendthemusicalactivitiesoftheyear.Wearelookingforwardto

yeargroupsinthechoirhall.TheIrishLanguageFlagcommitteehelpedtoorganisethisandalsocorrectedalloftheanswers.Thecompetitionwasfiercebetweenallteams!OnWednesdaythestudentswatchedIrish

languagemovieswhichtheythoroughlyenjoyed.WehadourownIrishlanguagecinemainthechoirhall!Thursdaywasamajorhighlightwiththe

CéilíMór.ThankstotheTY’swhohelpedoutwiththisandtaughteveryonethesteps.Itwasgreatfun!AswellasthisthestudentscameoverfromStBridget’sprimaryschooltogetinvolvedinthefestivities!TheIrishcommitteehelpedthistimetoteachthedances.Theyreallyenjoyedworkingwiththechildrenandwereexhaustedwhentheyleft!OnFridaywehadIrishlanguagepop

songsovertheintercomandthecommitteeorganisedacakesalewhichwasagreatsuccess.Also,theIrishteachersspoketoeveryoneabouttheadvantagesofattendingtheGaeltachtandthestudentshadtheopportunitytoaskquestionsandgetinformationaboutthis.Thecompetitionwasfierceagain

betweenthe1styearclassesastheypracticedforthesongcompetitionwhichalsotookplaceonFriday.TheyalllearnedIrishlanguagepopsongsandtheysangatthetopoftheirlungsfromthestage.Welldonetoallinvolved.Thereisnodoubtthatitwasafantastic

week.Everyone–studentsandteachersalikemadeanefforttospeakwhateverIrishtheyhadbothinsideandoutsidetheclassroom.WearesoproudoftheIrishlanguageinourschoolandSeachtainnaGaeilgegivesusagreatopportunitytocelebrateournativetongue.CailínMorgan

Literacy Week 2018!Thisterm,wecelebratedliteracyweekwithavarietyofeventsandactivities.Eachjunioryeargrouptookpartina‘DropEverythingandRead’ andvisitedthelibrarytogetlostinabookoftheirchoice.Firstyearstudentsalsocompletedapoetrycompetitionwhichallowedthemtodemonstratetheirwonderfultalentandcreativity.WelldonetoVivienneUlugbekfrom1Indigowhowasthedeservingwinner,havingpennedapoemontheprocessofwriting.

Studentswerealsoinvitedtoapop-upbookclubwhichwasheldinthelibrary.Eachstudentbroughtalonganovelthattheyhavereadorarecurrentlyreadingandsharedthiswiththegroup.Wehadsomeamazingrecommendationsrangingfrom‘TheCompleteWorksofWilliamShakespeare’,‘TheMazeRunner’byJamesDashner,‘TheChoice’byPhillyMcMahonandevensomemangacomics!AparticularthankstoMsMurraywhoalsoattendedthebookclubandsharedherbookofchoice‘DearWorld’byBanaAlabed,aboutasevenyearoldgirlgrowingupinwar-tornSyria.Itwasn’tjustthestudentswhogot

involvedinliteracyweekhowever.Ahugethankstoalloftheteacherswhocontributedtothe‘BookRecommendationWall’inthestaffroom.MsDoyle

McCarthy Award forCreative Writing TheMaryMcCarthyAwardisanannualawardgiventoa6thyearstudentwhohasexcelledincreativewriting.ItisawardedbytheEnglishDepartmentinhonourofamuchbelovedformerEnglishteacherinStMary’s.MaryMcCarthywasasuccessful,publishedauthorandnurturedthecreativetalentsofherstudentsduringhertimehereasateacher.Thisyear’srecipientisSophieLieghio,afoundingmemberoftheCreativeWritingClubandastudentwhohasconsistentlyimpressedwithherwritingskillsduringhertimehereasastudent.Sophiewaspresentedwithastatueatthe6thYearAwardsCeremonyongraduationday.WehavenodoubtthatwewillbeseeingSophie’snameinprintinthefuture!

JuniorCyclestudentsasbothour2ndand3rdYearscompletedtheirClassroomBasedAssessments.Every2ndYearhadtomakeathree-

minutepresentationinfrontoftheirclass,comprisingofeitheraperformanceoraspeech.Thestudentshadtoresearchanddeveloptheirownideas,andwewitnessedafantasticvarietyoftopicsandperformances.InApril,our3rdYearsfinishedtheirportfoliooftexts,whichtheyhavebeencreatingforthelasttwoyears.Thisinvolvedcreatingpiecesofwriting,editingandthenredraftingintocompletedtexts.Thisinvolvedagreatdealofeffortandskillfromourstudents,andwe’resuretheseskillswillbeoftremendousvaluetotheminSeniorCycle.Onthe24thMaythe3rdyearsalso

completed10%oftheirfinalgrade,whentheysataclassroom-basedexam.Welldonetoallforcompletingthese

importantassessmentsaspartoftheirJuniorCycle.

meetingwiththeparentsofincomingfirstyearson21stofMarchtoinitiateourlong-termpartnershipoverthenextfiveorsixyears.Thisisaninvaluableopportunityfortheparentsofthenew1styearcohortto

learnmoreaboutthedaytodayrunningofStMary’sincludingthejournal,codeofbehaviourandpastoralsysteminourschool.Tofurtherthispartnership,weareinvitinganyoftheincomingfirstyearparentstomakeanappointmentattheendofMayforaninformalinterviewwithamemberofGuidanceCounsellingdepartment.

2nd YearThisterm2ndyearstudentsreceivedaveryinformativetalkfromBodyWhysabouteatingdisorders,healthybodyimage,self-esteemandmediainfluence.JuniorDiscoverDCUisaninitiativeofthe

DCUAccessProgrammetargeting2ndyearstudents.IttakestheformofaworkshopforstudentswhohaveaninterestingoingtothirdleveloncetheycompletetheirLeavingCert.Theaimoftheworkshopistogiveinformation,allowstudentstoexploretheirfears,anxietiesandexpectationsabout

the7thMarch.Thiswasanopportunityforparentsandstudentstofindoutaboutleavingcertoptionssuchastransitionyear,5thyearandLCVP.Teachersfromeachoptionsubject(History,Geography,Art,Music,HomeEconomics,Physics,Chemisty,Biology,Business,Economics,AccountingandPolitics&Society)deliveredashortpresentationtoparentsandstudents.

TYstudentsattendedtheFutureSparksBusinessandEntrepreneurialFairintheRdson22ndMarch.Itwasaninspiringdaywherethegirlsattendedupliftingandmotivationaltalksfromcurrentbrightsparks!FourTYstudentsattendedextrawork

placementsfacilitatedbyDCU.MajaGrondzewskawenttoGoogleforoneweek.CiaraMcKenna,MariaZubascuandGeorgiaWalshallspentaweekatlegalfirmArthurCox.Thiswasafantasticopportunityforthestudentswhorepresentedusexcellently.On18thAprilTYsattendedacareersfair

atStMichael’sHolyFaith,Finglas.Thiswasajointventureorganisedbyseveralschoolsinthearea.Studentswereabletospeakwithrepresentativesfrommanycolleges.Itwasagreathelptotheirseniorcyclecollegeresearch.AspartoftheDCUUniTY programmeTY

studentshaveundertakenmodulesincludingSmartSkillsMultimedia,EmployabilityandStudentEmpowerment.ThisisthefirstyeartheUniTY programmehasruninStMary’s,culminatinginanawardsshowon25thApril.Ithasbeenagreatsuccesswithstudentswinningawardsinthreecategories.

Onthe1stMay,TYstudentsattendedtheDCUTransitionYearopenday,averyinformativeexperience.Studentsexperiencelecturesandreceivedcampustours.

5th YearFive5thyearstudents,HadeelAbbas,EishaMunir,BayanBasmage,KerryTynanandAmyBernardosparticipatedintheUFirstprogrammethisyearinconjunctionwithDCU.Thishasinvolvedattendingcareerworkshops,studyseminarsandattendingaDCUshadowingdaywheretheyattendedlectureswithaDCUmentor.Thestudentswillcontinuewiththe2ndyearofUfirstnextyear.

6th YearCAOapplicationsarenowwellandtrulyinandsomestudentswillbeplanningonreadjustingtheirchoicesontheirchangeofmindformwhichisaccessibleonlinefromMay5th-July1st.

FETAC ManyofthestudentsapplyingforFETAChavehadinterviewsandhavebeenofferedplacessubjecttotheirresultsintheLeavingCertificate.6thyearstudentshaveenjoyedavaried

scheduleofcollegetalksthisyear.Awiderangeofthirdlevelcolleges,universitiesaswellaspostleavingcertcollegeshavespokentothestudentsaboutoptionsafter6thyear.Agroupofpastpupilsfromseveral

differentcollegesandcourseshavealsospokentothe6thyearsaboutthetransitionfromStMary’stothirdlevel.ItwasgreattoseethepastpupilsdoingsowellinTrinity,DCUandColaisteDhulaighinadiverserangeofcourses.Theirvisitswereaparticularhighlightforcurrent6thyears.

Wewishallofour6thyearstudentseverysuccessintheirLeavingCertificateandlookforwardtolinkinginwiththeminmid-Augustfortheresults.MsSullivanwillbeavailableinAugusttosupportthestudentswhentheyreceivetheirresultsandlateronwhenoffersarebeingmade.
