Thomas believed because he saw the risen Jesus, so too were many brought to faith through the various signs and wonders wrought by the apostles. They proclaimed as Lord “the stone rejected by the builders,” and “the First and the Last of the One who lives.”

’Tis the season for sunglasses. Yes, there are a few more hours left for April showers to gray the skies. But soon enough the dominant weather will be sunny and warm. We’ll all be needing that often stylish eye wear to protect us from the glare of our nearest star.We know that people who were contemporaries of Our Lord had no such protection, and that diseases of the eye were commonplace. Evidently it was part of the risen Jesus’ kindness that precluded Him from dazzling all those who saw Him with bright light, such as the one which temporarily blinded the future St. Paul. But they saw clearly that Jesus came to them despite locked doors and spoke to them as naturally as they remembered. All this after the awful crucifixion and burial. Most of their number had fled the scene that awful Friday. But here He was smiling at them again. That alone generated awe and dropped jaws!John records two private “audiences” the King of kings granted to the original Apostles. One was to ten of them, and another to eleven, St. Thomas making the count difference. We may still be a little taken back by Thomas’ famous four words at hearing the news: “I will not believe!” Didn’t he trust his closest friends? Did he surmise that they were all deluded by wishful thinking? Yet, we are immediately touched by the five words of this man’s humble profession of faith as he knelt before his Lord and said: “My Lord and my God!”

That is where the story might have ended. But then we would never have been given the comfor t of Jesus’ ten words to Thomas that followed: “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”As those of Our Lord’s words have echoed down the 20 plus centuries since they were first uttered, most of us have clung to them when the winds of doubt and discouragement have blown mightily in our faces. I know I have. Not every day living out the priesthood is filled with bliss. Nor I suspect have they been the same for you who have been given your vocations of marriage or the single life. But be assured that your fidelity inspires and encourages my own. My hope always is that mine does the same for you. It’s all part of Easter joy. It also prevents our “Alleluias” from sounding hollow. Those same ten words of Our Lord to St. Thomas are, to me, a part of Our Lord’s divine mercy. That consoling part of His nature that truly leads me to trust in Him. I have turned to those words often over the more than seven decades of my life when I have been aware of not seeing, even though I am called to be believing. That is an appropriate thought today, because this is also “Divine Mercy Sunday,” so designated by Pope St. John Paul II, who was himself an icon of faith.I began these reflections thinking that it’s time for wearing sunglasses, and how they help us to see clearly now in the bright light of the new season. The Easter story has a lot to do with vision of another kind. It reminds us so powerfully that “true faith is the daring of the soul to go farther than it can see.”

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

CCD CORNER St. Mary’s School is now enrolling students for Early Childhood. St. Mary’s offers a preschool class to children of all faiths that are three years of age by September 1 as well as two classes of Pre-K students that are 4 before September 1. The preschool uses Scholastic’s My Big World and a thematic approach to learning. The Pre-K uses the Scholastic Big Day for Pre-K Early Learning Program. These programs are proven, effective, early learning programs that embrace children’s natural curiosity and encourage them to explore the world around them. Our religion program uses stories from both the Old and New Testaments. Children are able to connect God’s love to their everyday life. Our EC classes have two teachers to a maximum of 15 students. The children participate in music, physical education, and health and safety classes. Please call Ms. Juli Jensen-Derrig (568-2388) to schedule a tour and have your questions answered. THE 2020 MASS BOOK opens for Masses offered for those celebrating a significant wedding anniversary (living)

on Wednesday, May 1, at 9 a.m. and intentions for the deceased on Wednesday, June 5, at 9 a.m. Multiple Mass intentions are allowed two days a week, except weekends and holy days. For our 2020 Mass Book, weekends and holy days may only have one intention per Mass. The Mass Stipend is $10 per Mass. The gift of a Mass is an integral part of the rich tradition of our Church and provides a special way to honor and pray for someone who has died. They have gone before us, but in God’s love they are called to new life. So honor them on the anniversary of their passing, their birthday or anniversary.
