Many might be surprised to see that the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) describes prayer as a 'battle' in paragraph 2725. We don't normally associate our relationship with God in terms of violence and gore. But, on another level, the image of a battle, or a struggle, is a fitting one. How often in our own lives have we struggled to pray? Sometimes, we don't have time, we can't organize our thoughts, or, once we actu-ally do sit down and pray, it feels like we're just talking to ourselves and our prayers go nowhere. I think we've all experienced this battle of prayer. The Catechism, then, is helpful when it reminds us that this struggle in prayer is nothing new or unique to us. It is a struggle that all the great Saints have en-dured and emerged from victorious! In Christ, they can show us how to do the same. The first great reminder is, prayer is not the result of our efforts, alone. Prayer comes first from the Holy Spirit (CCC 2726). Armed with His assistance then, how is the Christian supposed to pray? The Catechism gives us three virtues to ask for: humili-ty, trust, and perseverance. Distractions in prayer are always around us. There are many things in our lives crowding us for attention, including many good and important things. In prayer, to "set about hunting down distractions would be to fall into their trap" (CCC 2729). What we need to do is to simply and humbly return to our Lord; a great way to do this when we become aware of our distractions is to simply say, "Lord, I don't know where I was but I'm back now", and simply start to pray again. This humil-ity ensures that we always return to the Lord for His help in prayer and don't fall into he trap of thinking we are main actors in our drama. More on prayer and trust next week...
We have had a won-derful turnout for our weekly Chil-dren’s Liturgy! Thank you for shar-
ing your children with us. We are looking for 3-4 more adult volunteers. All materials are sup-plied, work is once every 3-4 weeks. Everything is meant to be simple and the return is priceless. Please contact Laurie at [email protected] or call the Rectory for more information.
