Reflection: This Sunday we listen to the one of the great stories not only of the Gospel but of all time, commonly known as The Prodigal Son, but more about the loving Father. We hear this alongside two other parables: the lost sheep and the lost coin. What does it mean to be lost? For the prodigal son it meant descending into the depths of depravity, looking after pigs, which for a Jew was about as low as you could go. However, it was at that low point that he recalled the love of his father and decided to return prepared to earn his way back into his fa- ther's favour. He didn't have to worry. His father's love was unconditional and his return was celebrated with a great party. This story is very much at the heart of the twelve-step programme: you have to break down in order to break through, that is recognising that your life is unmanageable because of your addictive behaviour, and once you bottom out you can begin to claw your way back. The tragedy is that many do not bottom out and descend into oblivion. At least if you have a memory of a love that is unconditional you have something to come back to. Sadly many do not make their way back and end up self-destructing. The other key player in this story is of course the older son. He dutifully does what he has always done, is faithful, reliable and dependable. To him that is all that matters, but he does not see the wood for the trees and this is his downfall. Somehow we all have to be broken open to see the bigger picture. He becomes angry. We don't know the outcome. Did he come around to embrace his brother or did he remain imprisoned in his anger? In this Creation Season we are being reminded that our common home is in mortal peril and unless we confront this we will come to the point of no return. Scientists tell us we have ten years left. For too long this reality has been un- dermined by media supported by big money but at last the truth is starting to hit home. Indi- vidually we are powerless but collectively we can do something.
