Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¡buenos días!

El Evangelio de este penúltimo domingo del año litúrgico propone una parte del discurso de Jesús sobre los últimos eventos de la historia humana, orientada hacia la plena realización del Reino de Dios (cf. Mc 13, 24-32). Es un discurso que Jesús pronunció en Jerusalén, antes de su última Pascua. Contiene algunos elementos apocalípticos, como guerras, carestías, catástrofes cósmicas: «El sol se oscurecerá, la luna no dará su esplendor, las estrellas caerán del cielo, los astros se tambalearán» (vv. 24-25). Sin embargo, estos elementos no son la cosa esencial del mensaje. El núcleo central en torno al cual gira el discurso de Jesús es Él mismo, el misterio de su persona y de su muerte y resurrección, y su regreso al final de los tiempos. Nuestra meta final es el encuentro con el Señor resucitado. Yo os quisiera preguntar: ¿cuántos de vosotros pensáis en esto? Habrá un día en que yo me encontraré cara a cara con el Señor. Y ésta es nuestra meta: este encuen-tro. Nosotros no esperamos un tiempo o un lugar, vamos al encuentro de una persona: Jesús. Por lo tanto, el problema no es «cuándo» sucederán las señales premonitorias de los últimos tiempos, sino el estar preparados para el encuentro. Y no se trata ni si quiera de saber «cómo» sucederán estas cosas, sino «cómo» debemos comportarnos, hoy, mientras las esperamos. Estamos llamados a vivir el presente, construyendo nuestro futuro con serenidad y confianza en Dios. La parábola de la higuera que germina, como símbolo del verano ya cer-cano, (cf. vv. 28-29), dice que la perspectiva del final no nos desvía de la vida presente, sino que nos hace mirar nuestros días con una óptica de esperanza. Es esa virtud tan difícil de vivir: la esperanza, la más pequeña de las virtudes, pero la más fuerte. Y nuestra esperanza tiene un rostro: el rostro del Señor resucitado, que viene «con gran poder y gloria» (v. 26), que manifiesta su amor crucificado, transfig-urado en la resurrección. El triunfo de Jesús al final de los tiempos, será el triunfo de la Cruz; la demostración de que el sacrificio de uno mismo por amor al prójimo y a imitación de Cristo, es el único poder victorioso y el único punto fijo en medio de la confusión y tragedias del mundo. El Señor Jesús no es sólo el punto de llegada de la peregrinación terrena, sino que es una presencia constante en nuestra vida: siempre está a nuestro lado, siempre nos acompaña; por esto cuando habla del futuro y nos impulsa hacia ese, es siempre para recon-ducirnos en el presente. Él se contrapone a los falsos profetas, contra los visionarios que prevén la cercanía del fin del mundo y contra el fatalismo. Él está al lado, camina con nosotros, nos quiere. Quiere sustraer a sus discípulos de cada época de la curiosidad por las fechas, las previsiones, los horóscopos, y concentra nuestra atención en el hoy de la historia. Yo tendría ganas de preguntaros —pero no re-spondáis, cada uno responda interiormente—: ¿cuántos de vosotros leéis el horóscopo del día? Cada uno que se responda.. Y cuando tengas de leer el horóscopo, mira a Jesús, que está contigo. Es mejor, te hará mejor. Esta presencia de Jesús nos llama a la espera y la vigi-lancia, que excluyen tanto la impaciencia como el adormecimiento, tanto las huidas hacia delante como el permanecer encarcelados en el momento actual y en lo mundano. También en nuestros días no faltan las calamidades naturales y morales, y tampoco la adversidad y las desgracias de todo tipo. Todo pasa —nos recuerda el Señor—; sólo Él, su Palabra permanece como luz que guía, anima nuestros pasos y nos perdona siempre, porque está al lado nuestro. Sólo es necesario mirarlo y nos cambia el corazón. Que la Virgen María nos ayude a confiar en Jesús, el sólido fundamento de nuestra vida, y a perseverar con alegría en su amor.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning!

The Gospel of this penultimate Sunday of the liturgical year offers us part of Jesus’ discourse regarding the last events of human history, oriented toward the complete fulfillment of the reign of God (cf. Mk 13:24-32). It is the talk that Jesus gave in Jerusalem before his last Passover. It has certain apocalyptic elements, such as wars, famine, cosmic catastrophes: “The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken” (vv. 24-25). However, these seg-ments are not the essential part of the message. The core around which Jesus’ words turn is he himself, the mystery of his person, and of his death and resurrection, and his return at the end of time. Our final goal is the encounter with the Risen Lord. I would like to ask how many of you think about this. “There will be a day in which I meet the Lord face to face”. And this is our goal: the encounter. We do not await a time or a place, but we are going to encounter a person: Jesus. Thus the problem is not “when” these premonitory signs of the last days will occur, but rather our being prepared. Neither is it about knowing “how” these things will happen, but instead “how” we have to act today, in awaiting these things. We are called to live the present, building our future with serenity and trust in God. The parable of the fig tree that sprouts, as a sign of the approaching summer (cf. vv. 28-29), teaches that the perspective of the end doesn’t distract us from the present life, but rather brings us to look at our current days with an outlook of hope. This virtue of hope that is so hard to live. The smallest but strongest of the virtues. And our hope has a face: the face of the Risen Lord, who comes “with great power and glory” (v. 26), which will manifest his love, crucified and transfigured in the Resurrection. The triumph of Jesus at the end of time will be the triumph of the Cross, the demonstration that the sacrifice of oneself for love of neighbour, in imitation of Christ, is the only victorious power, the only stable point in the midst of the upheavals and tragedies of the world. The Lord Jesus is not only the destination of our earthly pilgrim-age, but also a constant presence in our lives; he is also beside us, he always accompanies. That’s why, when we speak of the future and project ourselves toward it, it is always in order to lead us back to the present. He counters the false prophets, the fortune-tellers who pre-dict that the end of the world is near; he sets himself against fatalism. He is at our side; he walks with us; he loves us. He wants to remove from his disciples of every age the curiosity about dates, predictions, horoscopes, and focus their attention on the today of history. I would like to ask you — don’t answer out loud, each one answer to himself — how many of you read your horoscope every day? Each one an-swer, and when you feel like reading your horoscope, look to Jesus who is with you. This is better and will be better for you. This pres-ence of Jesus calls us to the anticipation and vigilance that exclude both impatience and lethargy, both the escaping to the future and the becoming prisoners of the current moment and of worldliness. In our days, too, there is no lack of natural and moral disasters, nor of ad-versities and difficulties of every kind. Everything passes, the Lord reminds us; he alone, his Word remains as the light that guides and encourages our steps. He always forgives us because he is at our side. We need only look at him and he changes our hearts. May the Vir-gin Mary help us to trust in Jesus, the firm foundation of our life, and to persevere with joy in his love.
