JULY 31, 2011 ● 18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
www.stmaryfc.org
HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT Today's Gospel is a familiar story. A large crowd gathers to hear Jesus
speak, and we learn that there were "about five thousand men, not
counting women and children" (Matthew 14:21). If all were counted the
actual size of the crowd might have been anywhere from double to
triple that number. That makes Jesus' feeding of such a large gather-
ing with only five small loaves and two fish a true miracle. Yet the
miracle is not simply, as many people think, Jesus performing some
sort of superior magic trick to impress us or to fool us. Instead he is
pointing to a greater truth for us to ponder, and he uses signs and
symbols to get our attention. Signs and symbols surround us. They are
a vital part of every human culture, but they vary in meaning from one
part of the world to another. For example, the color red often denotes
danger in most Western countries; in the East it is the color of celebra-
tion. Similarly, a handshake, a bow, an embrace, or a hug all have
different interpretations in different cultures. In this Gospel story the
feeding of the crowd is a sign of Jesus' power to feed so many with so
little, and a symbol of the eucharistic bread we still share today. At the
same time, remember that small gem of phrasing in the story that is
worth considering--"not counting women and children." This is signifi-
cant, for many societies today do not consider women or children
equal to men. Who does "not count" or is hidden among the crowd in
the community of faith? How can we feed those who are starving--for
attention, a kind word, a helping hand? What can we do personally
that might make all the difference? Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Living Stewardship Now

Pork & Corn Roast We’re ready to roast! I hope you’re planning to join the fun next Satur-
day, August 6th
, as we celebrate another Pork & Corn Roast. It’s a great
community builder, a family feast, a good old fashioned country celebra-
tion. If you’re new to the parish, it’s a good way to meet new friends and
catch the spirit of St. Mary. If you’ve been a parishioner for years, it’s a
great way to rekindle your love for our unique parish, founded in 1864,
and still serving the community of Fremont Center. The Pork & Corn
Roast is also an important fundraiser that supports our educational pro-
grams and ministries. In these hard economic times, your support of the
Pork & Corn Roast means more than ever.
Staff Changes You’ve already heard that Mary Hall, our parish business manager, has
retired after many years of faithful service. Howard Fischer assumes re-
sponsibility for overseeing parish finances, facilities and systems. In his
role as Director of Parish Operations, Mr. Fischer will assist me in caring
for our large campus and maintaining all the policies and procedures that
enable us to operate effectively.
Greg Entwhistle, who served St. Mary as our first full time Coor-
dinator of Youth Ministry, is moving on to further studies at Georgetown
University in Washington, DC. Greg has laid a firm foundation for our
ministry to youth and I am grateful for his ministry among us. Ryan
Rehkamp will assume his responsibilities as our new Coordinator of Youth
Ministry in early August. You’ll have a chance to meet Ryan when he in-
troduces himself at weekend Masses in the near future. Ryan will take
the lead in implementing the Archdiocesan Strategic Plan for this year’s
focus on Youth Ministry.
Catholic Education Summer passes quickly and planning for a new school year is already in
motion. If you’re new to St. Mary, you may find it interesting to know
that we have a parish Pre-K to 5th
grade day school, which boasts a new
learning curriculum that is creative and engaging. Frassati Catholic Acad-
emy in Wauconda welcomes our 6th
to 8th
graders in a regional based
school that has received national attention for its innovative program and
its strong Catholic identity. Given the times we live in, there is more rea-
son than ever to choose Catholic Schools. While our government schools
can provide an excellent academic program, they can only go so far in
providing the moral base for forming our children in the spirit of the Gos-
pel. It’s not too late to consider enrolment in a Catholic School for this
coming academic year. And if you don’t have children to send to a Catho-
lic School, but believe in the value of a solid Catholic education, please
consider offering a scholarship or partial scholarship for a child who
might otherwise not be able to attend a Catholic School. The cost of edu-
cation today is rising and parish subsidies are not able to provide all the
necessary funds.
Parish Pictorial Directories Our Parish Pictorial Directories have finally arrived!
I apologize for the long delay. We encountered
many difficulties with the production this time
around which were beyond our control. In any
case, it’s a relief to have the directories in hand. To
all who took the time to have their photos taken
and have waited so patiently to see the results,
THANK YOU!
Summer Stewardship Summer is a great time to travel, to visit relatives
far away, to spend time at a summer home, etc.,
but life goes on at the Parish and the Parish contin-
ues to rely on your good stewardship. When you’re
preparing to travel or when you return, don’t for-
get about your spiritual home. It’s very important
to the well being of the parish that you maintain
your consistent giving. So whatever your weekly
tithe may be, set aside your offering for each week
to be a consistent steward. In the near future we
hope to provide new opportunities for electronic
giving which we hope will be helpful to everyone.
Roman Missal Translation Iin the coming weeks we will resume our catechesis
on the new translation of the Roman Missal. It may
take awhile to adjust to the new responses, but the
change is also an opportunity to refresh our under-
standing and appreciation for the Mass and the
quality of our participation. Like a new pair of
shoes, when we begin to use the new translation
on the First Sunday of Advent, we may feel some
stiffness, but after praying the texts week after
week we will no doubt feel right at home with the
prayers we offer.
Fr. Ron Lewinski
From the Pastor’s DeskFrom the Pastor’s DeskFrom the Pastor’s DeskFrom the Pastor’s Desk
How many times have you thought about how
“through the grace of God,” you and your family
have been blessed. At times we take so many things for granted that
we fail to see just how special the dinner our spouse has made for the
family, how proud our children have made us, or how much we enjoy
the life God has given us. There are many folks who aren’t able to
count those types of blessings, simply because daily living is such a
daunting task. They are poor, they don’t have enough to eat, they can’t
pay their utility bills, and their children don’t have what other children
may have. They are underprivileged and under cared for.
You can change that! Think about them, pray for them, and then,
when you pass the “Alms for the Needy Box” at the entrance to the
church, put $1.00 just $1.00 in that box so that the members of the St.
Vincent de Paul Conference can make a difference in their lives.
Please help those who can’t help themselves count their blessings.
“Whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers,
that you do unto me.”
-Matthew 25:40
Moms & Tots is a ministry for moms of school age children and younger. Our mission is to provide a place where Moms can go for fellowship, friendship, and fun with other moms in the same phase of life. At the same time, we
seek to provide a safe place for children to play and learn with kids their own age. Here are our upcoming August events. We hope ALL MOMS will join us!
Tues., August 9th, 10am - Liberty Lakes Subdivi-sion, Fieldbrook Park in Wauconda. Come join us for playtime at the park! And pack a picnic too! There are fields, a playground and bath-rooms.
Wed., August 10th, 7:30pm - Steering Committee Meeting at Katie Boscher's home. We have lots to share for the coming program year. Sat./Sun., August 13-14 - Hospitality Weekend after all masses. Assumption Day Mass
Monday, August 15, 2011
8:00 AM
Because the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin Mary falls on a Monday this year, the obligation to
attend mass is lifted.
St. Mary’s Childcare Room 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturdays 9:30 a.m. Mass on Sundays
Did you know that we offer Childcare during
two masses at St. Mary’s? This ministry offers families an opportunity
to attend Mass while their little ones (6 months–4 years old) are cared
for by adult volunteer parishioners (with Virtus training & background
check) and student volunteers. We are about to prepare the Fall/
Winter Schedule and are falling short on adult and student volunteers.
If you have used the Childcare Room, you know how valuable it is to
our parish. WE NEED YOU to continue our ministry!
Calling all parents who currently use the Childcare Room!
If we all give an hour, we would only need to volunteer once every 6-8
weeks. That’s only 6 times per year! Please contact Candice Rastrelli
at 847/270-7603 or [email protected].
Calling all 8th Grade Confirmation Candidates and High
School Students who need service hours! You can serve up to
1.5 hours per Mass that you volunteer. Please contact Tracie Ouimet
at 847/566-5062 or [email protected].
If we work together, we can continue offering a loving and safe place
for our little ones during Mass. Thank you to ALL our volunteers
that have been a part of this ministry the past few years!!

Help SVDP &
Our Sharing Parish
Send Our Kids to School Ready to Learn!
For the children of our St Vincent de Paul clients and many of our
sharing parish children the most basic school supplies are simply not
available. They deserve to have the supplies they need to make them
feel like learning is truly their #1 priority.
We will be happy to take your donations from July 23 through
August 7. Stop by the School Supply ‘Tree’ in the Narthex to pick
up a tag. Each year our St Vincent de Paul Conference has counted
on you to help us fill backpacks with age appropriate school supplies
for the children on our client list. If you have a school-age child it’s a
great experience to pick a tag and shop together for someone less
fortunate.
No time to shop? If you do not have time to pick a tag, we are always
happy to shop for you. Just leave a cash/check or a gift card donation
in the SVDP Alms for the Needy box located on the southwest wall of
the narthex. Please remember to mark your check or leave a note if
you want your donation to be used specifically for the school drive.
Our sharing parish school, the Academy of Our Lady, will gladly
accept our surplus supplies from the drive, after we have filled our
backpacks. They have expressed a need for the following general
items:
1-inch, white 3-ring binders
boxes of pocket folders (assorted solid colors)
packets of wide-ruled notebook paper
8-count Crayola brand (last the longest) classic colors markers
black sharpies
multicolored construction paper
pads ¼-inch graph paper
paper towels
facial tissue
reams of colored copier paper
#10 business envelopes (regular size)

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Friday, August 12, 2011 The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for ado-
ration on Friday, August 12th after the 8:00am
Mass, continuing until 10 pm. Adoration takes place in the Eucharistic
Chapel. Meditations and prayer cards will be available.
All are welcome. We hope you will take time to stop and visit with
our Lord during Adoration in Chapel. It is appropriate that someone
sign up and be present at all times when the Blessed Sacrament is
exposed. The sign-up book is on the easel in the narthex. If you are
unable to keep your time, please call the parish office, 847-223-0010,

SAINT MARY’S GRIEF SUPPORT
GROUP FOR ADULTS August 2nd, August 9th,
August 16th, August 23rd, and August 30th
It is our goal to be companions and guides for the bereaved, from the
time of their loved one’s death, until the time that they are no longer in
need of our assistance. True support does not mean that we are there
to cheer the person up. Rather, we are there to be present to the be-
reaved.
The gift of listening is powerful and many people need to talk about the
death over and over again. At other times, the bereaved needs to be
quiet. True effective support is not dependent upon how much we say,
but rather on our presence and how effectively we listen. Our small
groups will allow the bereaved to meet with fellow parishioners and
trained grief facilitators to help them through their grieving process.
Our next grief support group for adults will gather in meeting room #2
on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. beginning on July 19th. It is open to
adult men and women who have suffered the loss of a friend or rela-
tive through death. The program will be run by archdiocesan trained
facilitators who can help you in your own journey of life without your
loved one. Please call to register or just contact us to see what this
ministry offers.
For more information, contact Betty Steiner @ 847-837-9833 or
[email protected]. You will receive a call before each meeting date.

Fisch–ing Lines By Deacon Howard Fischer
Summer is the typical time for us to take a break
from the usual grind of life so that we can recharge
our batteries with a little rest or recreation. Vaca-
tions are also a great way to strengthen our family bonds. Maryann
and I (joined by our son and his family) have just returned from a trip
to re-visit several of our amazing national parks. I am constantly as-
tounded by the wonders that God has worked in nature. Having lived
my whole life in the Chicago area, I am always amazed when I go to
desert areas or areas that border the ocean or have mountains and
rugged terrain.
These trips have helped me to appreciate the richness of our country
and the awesome majesty of the Creator. In encountering the handi-
work God has wrought over tens of thousands and tens of millions of
years, I have come to a greater appreciation of the Scripture verse
which tells us that for God a million years is like a day and a day is like
a million years. I have come to a greater sense of awe and a renewed
appreciation of the fact that I am but His creature - not the center of
the universe.
Perhaps your family's vacations take on a different form of rest and
recreation. But whatever you do to re-charge your batteries, I hope
you will take the opportunity this summer to pause from the hectic
pace of everyday life in order to find the presence of God around you.
You don't have to travel to a wilderness area in some distant place to
find Him. His presence can be found in the flowers of our gardens and
in the solitude of a bike path. He can be found in the person in front of
you in the Jewel check-out line and in the co-worker occupying the
office cubicle next door. We can find him in our communal breaking of
the bread in the Eucharist. We need to reduce the "clutter" and re-
tune our antennae for God's wavelengths.
Rest and recreation are essential parts of our lives, not just optional,
frivolous add-ons! Our workaholic culture can make us feel guilty for
taking time off, especially in a difficult economic climate. Still, we
should make it a priority to get away from our ordinary routines in
some fashion in order to come back renewed and re-energized.
Genesis tells us that even God took some time off to enjoy the crea-
tion he had made! Surely if God found it desirable to take a break, it
must be a good idea for us too!!
Visiting our natural wonders also reminds me of the responsibility
given to us by God to be good stewards of the world He entrusted to
our care. How good are we at protecting the environment? Do we try
to conserve fuel and energy (even when gas prices are not pinching
our wallets)? Do we fully participate in recycling our paper, plastics,
aluminum, etc.? Do we support efforts to protect the wildlife, re-
sources and beauty of our planet? Even if they cost us some time or
money? You may not often think of these activities as having a moral/
spiritual dimension, but they most definitely do. Good stewardship of
the environment is one of the seven fundamental themes of the
Church’s social teaching.
I hope that you and your loved ones will have a wonderful summer in
the weeks ahead. And I hope that you will take some time to re-tune
your antennae to the wavelengths of our Heavenly Father using what-
ever way works for you. As always, if you wish to contact me, feel free
to leave a note at the Parish Office or send an email to dea-
Sacrament of Penance Saturdays 4:00—4:40 PM, and by appointment
Baptisms Ordinarily during the Mass on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of the month and after the Mass on the other Sundays, outside of Lent
Adult Initiation Adults who wish to become Roman Catholics are enrolled in a formation process that includes prayer, dialogue, instruction, and introduction to the Church’s life and values, rituals and tradition. Call the parish office for more information.
Marriage St. Mary Parish rejoices with parishioners who are preparing for the Sacrament of Matrimony. The Church requires at least four months’ time before the marriage for adequate preparation. A parish wedding information packet is available at the parish office.
Ministry of Care Ministers of Care visit the homes of the sick, homebound, or hospitalized and bring Holy Communion to them. Call the parish office when a pastoral visit is desired. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered by the parish priest upon request.
New parishioners We welcome new members who wish to worship with us and support the parish’s work and mission. Please call the parish office to schedule a time to register. A complete listing of parish services and organizations is available at the parish office.
