NEW HORIZONS PENTECOST: THE RECEPTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Almost 90 days ago we began the Season of Lent. Lent was a time of turning away from sin and toward God and a time of reflecting on the meaning of our baptism. Lent ended with the celebration of the Triduum on Holy Thursday evening. This sacred time allowed us to anticipate the upcoming celebration of Easter. At the Easter Vigil we began our celebrated of the Resurrection and celebrated Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. This was a glorious celebration. Please keep Julia, Konner, James and Jose in your prayers. We continued to unpack the meaning of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday morning and this reflection has contin-ued throughout the Season of Easter. Throughout the Easter Season we have reflected on not only the Resurrection but the new life that we have received through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. Pentecost is the celebration of the sending of the Holy Spirit. This event which closes the Season of Easter is also the last event in the Paschal Mystery – the Suffering, Death, Resurrection, Ascension and Sending of the Spirit. They are the central mysteries of our salvation. Pentecost is often called the Birthday of the Church because after the Apostles receive the Holy Spirit, they go out boldly and bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. It is the celebration which marks the begin-ning of the ministry and life of the Church. We who have received the gift of the Holy Spirit through our Baptism and Confirmation are called to proclaim that same Good News through our lives. In his article “The Message of Pentecost” Karl Rahner writes that Pentecost shows that “God is ours.” Pentecost cel-ebrates that God has given us his whole being without reserve through his gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost shows that God loves us and has blessed us with himself. Thus, we are to not lose of just how blessed we are as a result of this gift. We first receive the Holy Spirit in Baptism. In order to remain in the Holy Spirit, we must be a people of conversion. Conversion means turning away from sin and back to God every day. The Holy Spirit is always with us, even in times of darkness and pain when we do not feel the Spirit’s presence. The Holy Spirit is God’s gift of love that cannot be earned nor controlled. The readings that we will hear this weekend first show that the Holy Spirit transforms and recreates our interior lives. The Gospel writer John writes that the Holy Spirit reminds us of the words of Jesus and leads us to all truth. So, we are to listen to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit not only works in our interior lives but also blesses us with spiritual gifts so that we can better share our faith with others. In addition, the Holy Spirit gave the Apostles a sense of boldness which allowed them to move beyond their fear and share the Good News of Jesus Christ. . How do we open ourselves both to hear the guidance of the Holy Spirit and to live out the gifts of the Holy Spirit? First, we are to be a people of prayer and reflection who listen to the Spirit within. Second, we are to live lives of holi-ness which allow the Holy Spirit to work through us. The presence of the Holy Spirit helped the disciples to share their faith and to form the new Christian community. As we look ahead to the future of our parish let us reflect on how each of us will use our spiritual gifts to build up our community. This may come through youth ministry, RCIA, Small Faith Communities, social events, Parish School of Religion, visiting the sick, etc. May we open ourselves to the life of the Spirit within us. May we allow ourselves to become the living stones with which God will build up our parish.

Prayers & Squares have resumed meeting each month and invites anyone interested in joining them to come on the first & third Thursday of each month at 1:00 pm in classroom 7 & 8. The idea be-hind these quilts is simple, yet powerful. A heavy thread is used to take stiches through the quilt layers, and the ends are left free to be tied with a square knot. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is offered for someone in special need—someone who has asked us to pray for them. The quilt is then given to that per-son. What makes each quilt so special is not the pat-tern, color or workmanship, but the fact that prayer is symbolically tied into each one. These comforters are a statement of faith, and a testimony to our belief in God and in the power of prayer. Call the Parish Office @ 687-5121 to request a quilt & let us know who needs prayers.

VACCINE CLINIC AT SMOP

LSU Health Science Center will be providing the Pfizer COVID vaccine on Sunday, June 20th, 10:00 am till 2:00 pm at St. Mary of the Pines. They will return to provide a second dose on Sunday, July 11th. The vaccine is available for ages 12 years and above. Guardians of minors must be present to provide con-sent. To plan for staffing and the amount of vaccine needed, it is beneficial to LSU Health that people regis-ter in advance at https://www.Isuhs.edu/, however they will register people the day of the event. You will be asked to provide an ID and insurance card. Those who do not have an ID or an insurance card can still be vaccinated. Those who are vaccinated will have to pro-vide their address, date of birth, and telephone infor-mation. Fr. Mark Watson

PLEASE NOTE….Parishioners of St. Mary’s For those who are now using hearing aids and still could use a little help during Mass, we have a couple of headsets available on a first come—first serve basis. These can be worn over your hearing aid. The head-sets are property of St. Mary’s and will only work in church—no other place. Please see Carol in the Parish Office should you think these could be beneficial to you.
